Well done to Martin. Great from Dowsett as well.

Bit of a shame that the WC will only be the second best TTer in the world - but them's the breaks - you can only beat the men on the line on the day.

If Cancellara were there, I think Martin would still have had the better of him. You have to remember Martin has had a horrific season, but has finally come into good form.

.... oh maybe you mean Wiggins  I wouldnt say he is best TTer in the world - granted he has had an absolutely amazing year.

  • Tis a pity that the Olympic Gold in the TT isn't the best TTer more like!

Phinney looked devastated... but he can take heart in the fact that he has many years ahead. So does Martin, but Phinney is coming on in leaps and bounds.

Exciting final 15mins there... for a TT that is

Phinney is going to win this seven or eight times, isn't he?

Very pleased for Martin after his problems in the Tour.

However, is anyone seriously suggesting that a pre-brandy and cigs Wiggo would not have won today?
You only need two tools: WD40 and Duck Tape.
If it doesn't move and should, use the WD40.
If it shouldn't move and does, use the tape.

So the fastest nation on push bikes is germany: Arndt should date Martin.

    Yes.

Are you suggesting a pre-cigs Wiggo would've beaten a pre-car crash and broken handed Tone?

Also me. At the risk of getting attacked by the Wiggins fanboys, yes Wiggins is a great TT'er but not in the Cancellara or Martin league to be honest.

Isn't that basically how America got Taylor Phinney?

It is funny how the first great TT Martin does this year is the first one he's not racing against Wiggins in.

Wiggo of this year would have smoked the Martin of this year on that course. I genuinely don't know how anyone could argue otherwise after their 8 previous encounters this year.
  • Did Martin ride on clinchers this time?

Cancellara hasn't beaten Wiggins in a TT over 10km for over two years. He's not the force he used to be (I don't think he cares about TTs much these days).

perhaps Martin's crash has something to do with this. perhaps wiggo's form would have something to do with this after a very busy and successful season topping at the tdf and london2012. perhaps check out the TT results of copenhagen in 2011.

Of those previous 8 encounters this year, the playing field was level only for the first two (i.e. P-N). In all other TTs Martin was either seriously injured, coming back from serious injury or suffered mechanicals (in addition to either of the foregoing ailments).

I think his moral is in the gutter also (even though his new sprog just arrived).

Nobody is arguing that a shattered Wiggins would beat a full-strength Martin.

6 weeks ago he beat Tony Martin by 42 seconds, and Taylor Phinney by 2 minutes. He has been a class above everybody this year.

He was perfectly fine for the Olympics.

Is it me or is Phinney's time a bit suspect ???? - only days ago he was struggling to keep the pace with his BMC team mates. Or am i just being Dr Geert Leinders cynical 8)

You may have forgotten that he had to pull out of the Tour in its second week due to a badly injured wrist (he was back in a cast). It wasnt exactly ideal preparation for the Olympics the week after the Tour, now was it?

Maybe he just wanted save himself for today rather than going all out for some novelty prize.
