It is topics like this that make me want to do an un-build.

what is the aim of this bike? I don't see why you have been so anal about weight saving on a frame/forks that weren't built to be superlight.

If you want a light bike buy an xc hardtail. Youv'e built an AM bike but have compromised on some of the parts for weight saving. For example, youv'e bought tyres, not for their ability to grip, but their weight saving.

Also, please say you have a bottom part to that chain device, otherwise your going to spend more time putting your chain back on than riding it.

Don't get me wrong, it's a beautiful bike, just think youv'e got a bit carried away......

Just because he wants light weight doesn't mean he wants an xc bike, and hans dampfs are super grippy tyres that happen to be relatively light, so why not use them?

    @Dirtrider,

I wouldn't say a 1500g set of tyres is really buying tyres because of their weight over ability to grip. They ain't light.

He also has a dropper post. Hardly a weight weenie just a guy with a limit.

On a separate note in response to an earlier post on this thread, aside from applying tension to the chain how does the bottom section of a chain guide help keep the chain on, surely chains get thrown off from the top. That's the entry point for the chain on the ring. The important part to keep on. How will the bottom bit keep it on if it's coming off?!? It won't, therefore it seems pretty useless. (I do have one on my bike but never really questioned it's place before)

Looking really good, great work on trying to achieve a weight limit, you inspired me to fit some lighter pedals to my Nerve XC.

I guess its an exercise in pushing current engineering and technologies to build a completely bespoke bike with a objective in mind.

    Defo cool.
But also defo not something for everyone (in terms of actually carrying it out)

Your bars and stem are quite heavy.

You could probably save nearly 200g on those with a kcnc or on one cnc stem and carbon bars.

    was only a question..........

Understand what you mean, and the lighter the bike the better I suppose.

Wish mine was a bit lighter come to think of it............

haha - The pedals really surprised me when I weighed them, I didn't think the DX spds would be the same weight as an baby elephant..

If I wanted to go crazy, I'd leave the Reverb off, get some Uber-Expensive Carbon trick parts and then spend about as much as a Strive esx 9.0 ltd and spend over 4k on it...Which I just don't have, and if I did have it I would'nt spend it on a MTB. Might buy a £2000 and have money for Alps or Whistler :)

Thanks for the feedback guys, I don't want to make a XC bike at all!! I've done XC for years and I want to mix my now-gone DH Cove Shocker with my XC Ragley MmmBop (also gone because of this build) Because I just crave for a bike that I can do everything on and not have the hassle of keeping two bikes and two expensive bills.. Now I've nearly finished this build I'm thinking should I have gone for the Canyon AM bike...Anyone tell me what they're like to ride and how much they weigh?

About the Chain guide..I've never had a problem with this single-ring guide on my Ragley when riding trails or even DH tracks. The only time I've had problems is when I'm off the bike and I spin the chain back whilst moving the bike, sometimes it jams up a bit. I may, as Dirtrider says get a full guide that'll fit around the whole ring, because my DH rig had the same and I trashed it about a lot with no issues on that front.

Lawman is right I wanted tyres that'd be a good mix of both. Hans Dampf just had a review in BikeRadar and they scored top (Joint top with RQ Black Chili) and they're 750g!! That is heavy for a tyre, I was looking at the Nobbys EVO at around 650ish but I heard the walls split and so on..

I can't believe I didnt finish the bike before I came here to Barcelona, now I'm just scooting around on a rented bike that is hard to pop a wheelie. Only 1 week and 6 days till I'm back (Should be relaxing and having fun away from work but I just want to be back a home so that I can ride) and have the chance to finally ride the Strive...

Fill the frame and tyres full of helium.... Negative weight saving!! ;)

Also, you may need to shorten / adjust the position of the cable of the dropper post, atm it looks like it will get caught up in the rear wheel when dropped.... but obviously dont adjust until you have decided on frame ;)

Good point about the reverbs cable, I didnt think about when its down.. I just don't want to have to cut it and then bleed it all again as I don't have the bleed kit.

Well, that helium idea might have some potential the nissan Skyline tyres are filled with nitrogen...Although I know that Helium is very fine (finer then air) and thats why they use it for leakage tests on Submarines..and so it may go through the tyre walls at a faster rate then the air..

You don't have to bleed it!

Have a look at the SRAM video, shortening a reverb hose.

Ahhheeerrrrr, I see. Just under the impression that you'd need to bleed..That does seem very straight forward apart from the red hose cutter which seems like something from a sci-fi movie. I've only got a pair of cutters which don't leave the hose with such a nice cut/finish.

    O god....Look at this deal!!!

    http://www.on-one.co.uk/i/q/FRTITELGUV3 ... _air_shock

Titus El Guapo with CC Double Barrel Air Shock for £800!!!! I might change my bike - The only thing putting me off is the rear dropouts on the Titus, they're standard non X12 holes...Shame really - I wouldn't have thought twice about that deal....

Cant you get adaptors for your existing rear hub?

Tbh, as long as the frame's rear triangle is structurally stiff, a rear thru axle wont make much difference.

Lose the aluminium headset spacers and fit some carbons, cheaper than Hope and lighter!
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.

    Yes but those Hopes aren't!

Besides 13g for 50mm of spacers http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=38974 not seen any ally close to that unless you know better?

They have said they will fit a 142X12 rear end on the newer model next year but I suppose if the rear end is stiff then it wouldn't matter..no-one seems to have any issues with the 135mm rear end so far.. AHRR I LOVE EL GUAPO!!!

    You know you want it!

You can always fit a superstar 10mm thru axle if you do have issues with the stiffness too. Hope do adaptors for their hubs to fit the superstar axle iirc.

I find the stiffness on my ftm (with ss rear axle) fine, and the ftm is likely flexier than the el guapo
