I've decided to do a full build and the choice of frame is the Canyon Strive. Bought the frame off Fleabay a few days ago and so it should arrive today. I've ordered lots of other components and they'll be arriving in the next few days to go straight on the bike.

This build is going to be the lightest and highest spec I can get to with my funds. I look for bargains and I buy them..I'm going to weigh everything that goes on the bike and post a final weight at the end. I am looking to get this bike within 12kg, I know, Big ask!!

First thing to arrive in post, Rockshox Reverb:

O and some Continental Rubber Queen Black Chili tyres, going tubeless.

Had to buy some adaptors for the hubs so they'd fit the frame, so SuperStar 142 rear adaptor and 20mm front.

Total without anything major!!!: 3052g -102g for Adaptors which I don't need anymore - 2950g

Might need to think about some more light weight tyres and pedals..

If you're after light bargains I wouldn't have bothered with the Hope stuff....

Schwalbe Hans Dampfs in 2.35" are about 700g (or less) each and very good. Cheap from Germany too.

You'll manage >13kg I imagine, but suspect you meant < (ie less than) 13kg ;-)
  • cant wait to see this 8) love the brakeset as well, i am also waiting for some superstar wheels to arrive :D ....its so frustrating though

I couldn't see on your spread sheet if you have considered the frame weight. Im looking forward to seeing the end result. Canyon sell the top spec Strive at a weight of 12.7kg at around £4000 if you achieve a similar weight for less that would be brilliant.

Wouldn't a vanilla seatpost be lighter too?

Its a work in progress. I got the frame/wheels today. Very pleased with both. I've stripped the frame and removed the Cranks, shifters, and mechs and I'll be replacing them with a Hammerschmidt AM (Hopefully) and so its similar to the Strive that costs Big bucks.

Stupidly I realised that the SuperStar Wheels I purchased off 'coopsman1' a few days ago are a slightly different red to the Hopes colour. I'm changing to Hope Pro 2/Flow wheels (Black Hubs/Rims).

To Huckfinn, I was waiting till I received the frame to post the weight but still havent weighed it yet :) I am very excited to see what I can do, I want it to be around 12.5kg but considering the £5k Strive has Cobalt wheels, and XO all round I think I'll get it to 13kgish

Njee20, Yea, thats what I meant, <13kg, Haven't done Maths GCSE for a while :)

waby1234: No seatpost would be lighter but then the Reverb but it wouldn't be similar to the Top Spec Strive haha :)

    Updated Pics:

    Just received it!!

Looking good!! I think sub 13kg is optimistic though, my HD is only just 12kg, and your frame and wheels alone add over a kg to the weight of mine, before you add heavier forks, brakes and heavy tyres. should be more like 14/15kg or so I'd say

Your HD is a very nice bike,

I'm looking for 13kg, I will turn to changing tyres, pedals if I'm over 13kg.. I'm going to be running X9 R mech, 10 Spd cassette and Hammerschmidt gearing so thats another bit of weight I don't need. We'll see, the forks are 2.26kg so....it'll be close..

Got a budget of £1500 and I'm way below that atm and I just need Hammerschmidt and stem. :) I'm taking my Cassette/Mech/shifter off my Ragley and getting HS/shifter/BB off someone I know. I'll be selling the Ragley off bit by bit to make the build a little easier on the pocket. I've got Hope Pro2/Crest wheels, Float 140s, Hope Minis, Thomson Stem, SLX cranks etc.. all need to be sold at some point.

    @lawman

I reckon he'll be alright I rebuilt my old Orange Patriot ('99) last year and it weighed in at just over 14kg. That's with old Z1's and a fox vanilla shock. If I tried I could easily loose over 1kg on mine. Sub-13 should be doable. Although the dropper will make it a touch more difficult. That's one heavy post!

    M_rift,

I LOVE those Hopes. I've just got the standard metal coloured ones 8)
    Up: Wilier Mortirolo
    Down: Orange Patriot

Thanks for the confidence Leejdavies, I need it. I was getting scared I'd be going from a sub11kg Ragley Mmmbop to a 14tonne heffa!

I got very lucky with those brakes, they look........just amazing. I literally cant wait. They'll be arriving tomorrow with the forks :)

Your budget is £1500? Did you buy the frame second hand?

And sub 13kg weight? I doubt that.

Yes the frame was second hand, bargain at £400 with SLX Double Cranks, SLX F Mech, XT R Mech and SLX Shifters, which are all in the classified section apart from the Shifter which are sold already.

Its not looking promising atm, just weighed the brakes and Saddle...

    IMG-20120809-02479.jpg

Still have Front wheel, rotors + bolts, Bars, grips, R Mech, Shifters, Cassette, HammerSchmidt AM system (Cranks/BB/Shifter), stem and sealant for tyres.

    Hertsmere-20120809-02485.jpg

Might have to get a lighter Saddle, Tyres, Brakes and Pedals nearer the end of the build...

    Total atm

Bargain on the frame, well done, but seeing as everything you're hanging on it weighs a ton you'll be miles over 13kg IMO!

    You're doing it wrong!!!!!

Subtract the weight of the cardboard box holding the brakes.
    Advocate of disc brakes.

I assumed that was part of their unique design.

Then I realised I was thinking of an Orange 5.

I agree with you Njee20, I will have to rethink most of the components. Anyone want some Red Anodized Hope brakes? :)

Don't worry Homer I zeroed the scales with the box ontop, I can't afford to have that box weighing on my spreadsheet...might hit 15kg!

    Ok, Change of plan.

DX spd pedals are going to be replaced by some XT Spds (352g Saving 228g from 580g!!)

    XTPedals.jpg

    Currently at just over 8kg

Those tyres have to go!! They are way too heavy..Will be changing those soon..

Is the weight that key on a 160mm full sus? My ragley piglet is 14kg and is no trouble climbing ect, never noticed the weight any way- also despite the weight aren't rubber queens meant to be a killer set of tyres? Looks like a good build though- really like the frame and the brakes look awesome!!

2.4" Racing Ralphs would be a good chunk lighter, or Hans Dampfs as suggested previously.

Are you aiming for 13kg spreadsheet weight, or actual, because even weighing each part I guarantee they won't match!

14kg is realistic, a hans dampf with a double defense nobby nic on the rear would save close to a kg, lighter brakes like the new xt m785's. ragley cheeky ti saddle is pretty cheap and light too. Personally wouldn't bother with the hammerschmidt either, its heavy as hell and other than its instant shift and improved clearance I see few positives to it.

Agree with all that, particularly the Hammerschmidt.

Still go for a 2.4" Ralph if weight's an issue though. Big tyre, only 575g. Good enough grip for all but proper mud, when even a Nic is crap. Go Snakeskin/DD if you're always riding rocky stuff.

If you want light brakes Formula are probably the way to go. The XTs aren't especially light, although they are excellent and worth the extra weight IMO.

Make a bigger difference fitting light rotors and changing bolts (alu lever clamps, 3 alu/3 ti on the rotors) for less than you will changing the brakes probably!
  • Am really interested to follow this one and see the finished result.

Don’t think it’ll be possible to get it under 13kg imo, my Canyon AM weighs 13.2kg with XO, carbon cranks and a few other trinkets.

It would be a shame to build such a burly steed and cover it in ultra light XC componentry, you ‘ll just bend and break it.

Sold the Red Hope M4s!...I'd have loved to keep them but at 600g with no rotors and adaptors its crazy.
Choice now is either Shimano XTR M980, XT M780 (Even the 2012 SLX are an option, they've got great reviews!!) or Formula The Ones (Shimano XTR/XT are cheaper then formulas). I'm running the floating Saw Hope rotors 203/183mm at the moment but if I buy the Forumla The One brakes I'll get rotors included which are very light. The Brake lever, caliper adaptor and 160mm rotors is something like 336g (If I remember correctly from BikeDiscount.de)

Weight wise its only a concern because of my previous bike, I don't want it built and its crazy heavy in comparision. And also I love spending money on bike parts and getting new things... 8)

ThePriory1978, I agree with that statement, its what I'm aiming for - An All-Mountain machine that can take most things that happen. Still aiming for -13kg... :) Gotta have a dream or you'll go no-where..

As for tyres - Thats a whole different kettle of fish I'll save for another day.. haha
