All ok until the first 8mins start then bang switch to standard and screws it all up...
P1ssing me off 3rd time in have attempted it now.

The relevant line looks to be this (if it makes sense to you, the various modes don't mean much to me as i've not used a Kickr)Tests
During our tests, we automatically put you in Slope Mode when you hit a test interval. We think this is good because you dictate the power output to us. If you don't want this, you can push F2 again and switch back to ERG mode.0 -

You'll have improved by then, and if you don't re-baseline your FTP, the second half of the plan will be too easy

Managed to get home a bit earlier than usually do so thought give Gayley a shot. This is the first ride after the 8 minute test on the intermediate base 1 plan. Surprised myself at how I did, even the wife was impressed that I kept it going through all four 8 minute intervals at my FTP

Thanks for that!!! I have been in touch with Wahoo and Trainer Road support as well and it all makes sense now. I have to say the support from both was excellent!!
Now I have worked out what is happening I was able to complete my first 8 minute test. It was still hard work but I guess it is supposed to be. I'm still working out what all the figures mean but here is my ride:

Well it looks like you worked fairly hard going by the heart rate so now you can crack on and see how much you can improve. Never easy doing the first test though.
I did 'Goddard' last night, involved some drills including one legged riding which I struggled with sometimes in terms of unclipping and clipping back in without stopping completely. The last two efforts were quite hard as they're based around higher cadence so I was spinning at around 120-130 for the final minute of each one. Got through it though and lost a shed load of sweat again in the process...

Next week I think I'm going to start the 20 minute FTP accelerator plan, it doesn't really seem worthwhile doing a base plan at this time of year. That will take me through until October when I've got a couple of hilly sportives, then I'll start the base plans in November.0 -
Ok, I know it is a common theme but would appreciate an experienced eye looking at my first workout on the trainer.
http://www.trainerroad.com/cycling/rides/381203
Using a Tacx Flow and had it set to the 0 setting.
I obviously went out too easy on the first 8 mins, but by the end of the first 8 mins I was in my hardest gear and spinning out almost at 120 cadence. This would indicate to me that something is wrong in the set up. I had calibrated the trainer during the warm up, you can see the spike. The flow does a spin down calibration from 30kmph. So should hopefully be reasonably consistent, if not accurate!
I am under no illusions of my own ability. Reasonably fit, I commute to work 4 times a week 28km round trip, do a longer ride(60-100km) on average twice a month. Do 3 or 4 100-160km sportives a year. But I do not have a FTP close to 300! That is sure. My max heart rate is 190. I hit 182 during the test. I know that the VP figure is not really for comparison with others, only for judging your own improvements.
So a couple of main questions:
1) Since I was almost spinning out at max effort in top gear, do I really need to run at the Flow 2% setting, rather than the 0% to increase the resistance.
2) If yes to above, I assume the power curve will be different and I really need to retest?
3) Can anyone see anything I might have set up wrong? Anyone else using the Flow and have input on the best set up?
Thanks for looking and appreciate any feedback.0 -
Hello,
Just wondering if anyone else keeps a track of their trainer road rides in strava? I do because it keeps everything in one place. But I have an issue with the mileage that is being generated from the trainerroad file uploads.
For example last night I did the Baxter and uploaded it to strava, but it states that I covered miles on that ride. Very unlikely considering I average 16-17 mph on the road.
Does anyone know how the mileage is being generated for how it can be altered?
Thanks.0 -
When you upload to Strava just check the box to tell Strava you did the ride on a stationary trainer.0
-
How are you uploading, from the tcx file generated by TR or from a Garmin? I don't have any issue with the tcx, the Garmin though would be dependent on the wheel circumference you put into it.0
-
Hi,
I did the Blender on Trainer Road the other day : http://www.trainerroad.com/cycling/rides/379189
When I look at the "Power Zones" and "Heart Rate Zones" tabs, there's a big difference between time spent in (what I think are) equivalent zones. For example, I spent 22mins in the sweet spot power zone, but only 2mins in the sweet spot heart rate zone.
Does this mean I've got something wrong, e.g., my FTP test is out of date, or is this to be expected?
Thanks.0 -
Hi,
I upload form my Garmin directly and don't get any distance shown despite using a speed/cadence sensor. How do you upload?0 -

Do you turn off GPS before you start the workout? If not, you need to...0 -

Oops, I should have been clearer, I was replying to FoggyBike and saying that my static trainer rides don't show a distance - which I think is what he's after. I don't turn off my GPS before static rides, I just upload directly from my Garmin to Strava and tell it that it's a static ride.0 -
Ok, well generally speaking ideally you need to turn GPS off as you can get very skewed data. Then make sure the magnet's attached and the proper wheel circumference is put in. Whether this is why his data is wrong though, I have no idea.0

Confusion
I download the file straight from TR then upload direct to Strava, rides are marked as static trainer. But it's still recording distance.
I'm more interested in however it is calculating the distance I covered on the trainer rather than nothing at all.0 -

It calculates it from the cadence sensor. However they don't show it as they acknowledge it's not necessarily accurate, although it's still contained within the tcx file. If you want a more accurate distance, use the Garmin if you have one. You can sync the Garmin with TR to show power as well so still get all the power data as well as speed/cadence.0 -

Thanks. Is it possible to have a garmin and wahoo trainer both working with trainerroad at the same time? I'll have a go tonight and see if I can get that to work.0 -
No idea, I'm not familiar with that trainer but I don't see why not.0

Two workouts within 12 hours has left me a bit sore. This morning's nearly made me throw up after half an hour.
http://www.trainerroad.com/cycling/rides/382958
A small blip where I had to stop to take the laptop out of the rain as I had it just outside the garage when it start chucking it down, but that hurt a lot. In terms of speed/distance, the tcx file had the exact same data as the Garmin.0 -
Two weeks after my 8 minute test I finally took the plunge and did the 20. FTP up by 9 to 306, it wasn't pretty but I managed to plough on through it and wasn't too inconsistent throughout unlike my first 8 minute effort last time.
http://www.trainerroad.com/cycling/rides/385341
Only issue now is that the workouts get harder...0 -
Looking for feedback on the plans in TR - anyone had any experience following them and what results have you experienced? New 40km TT plans look of most interest from what I've read but not signed up yet so not seen the detail of the plans themselves.
Plans would be for winter use really so looking for max FTP development in the run up to the start of TT season next year.Your Past is Not Your Potential...0 -
Had a skim through this thread to try and discover which turbo trainers are using that work well with TrainerRoad but from what I've seen there is nothing around the £150 price range.
Is anyone using this well with a trainer around that price range?0 -

Well done!, your right though, training with TR will now get harder for you
I am now into at the end of week 2 of base plan 1 and all seems pretty good so far. Looking forward to a retest in a couple of weeks time0 -
After reading this thread for ages, I think I have decided on a Kurt Kinetic Road Machine. Their new 2014 model is due out imminently, so hopefully there might be a bit of a price drop on the current model soon. If it ends up mid-£200s, are there any other (better?) Turbo's to look at in this price range? Is using the gears for resistance a better experience than having a resistance adjuster ?Trek Madone 3.1 Carbon 2012 Road

Can't talk for anyone else but I hate resistance adjustors and it's what makes the Road Machine such a great turbo for me.0 -
Just done the 12s and 1min power profile test and set a new FTP in the process. That's after a heavy gym sesh this morning too. I WILL be a track sprinter.

Did Ericsson tonight, for some reason it hasn't uploaded. Anyway, found the first couple of intervals quite tough, second two more manageable. Might start a base plan to keep the motivation up over the coming weeks.0

Come on then, who's done the new Sufferfest Violator yet?
I did the RealRides power on Saturday and I'm still hurting now, pretty brutal and cramp after 45 minutes or so didn't help!

Did it this morning. As per usual struggling to walk, although between it and Revolver, it's hard to say which is worse. The bit at the end is a bit of a b****** mind you, but I found it quite difficult to go as hard as I would like on some of the sprints as they were over so quickly. Not so with Revolver..0
