Race numbers are going up on the ASO Challenges site....

No. 1 goes to Julien Absalon, a former World and Olympic mountain bike champion!

PS. There are just under 13600 cyclists signed up for the Etape 2013

Follow the link from the Etape du Tour page -> Registrations -> Riders List which should take you to the ASO Challenges website and then enter your name in the search box. (It works on the French version of the page at least).

    9971, reasonably near the back....

I've been looking at the broom wagon cutoff times, which are on the site, and they don't look too bad to me (although I may live to regret that statement).

Assuming that the last rider is away by 08:30, they have nearly 10 hours to complete the course, including:
1 hour to reach Cote de Puget (14.5 km/h)
Another hour to reach Cote de Leschaux (12 km/h)
    A further hour and 1/2 to reach Cote d'Aillon-le-Vieux (16.6 km/h)
Another 40 min to reach Col de Pres (11 km/h)
    Another 2 hrs 20min to Mont Revard (12 km/h)
Another 1 1/2 hours to the foot of Semnoz, including the descent from Revard (18 km/h)
Over 2 hours then to the summit (8.6 km/h)

Average speed for the whole course would be 13 km/h to be just inside the cutoff time

Strangely enough, they only allow the last starters 14 minutes to do the first 7.5 km, which means they'll have to go like the clappers. And as well, they'll have been waiting in the cold the longest, so no chance of a gentle start to warm up!

I'm not sure that will matter so much this year. The section on eliminations says that they won't have a real broom wagon this year. You have to make it through each of the "Zone de Repatriement" before the cutoff time. The first zone is at 34.5 km, and the last rider should have just over 2 hours to get through.

It states that if you wish to abandon, you must make it to one of the zones, only mechanical/medical problems will be picked up along the route.

Anyone staying in along the west shore of Lake Annecy ? It looks like the route goes along there so I would expect the road (D1508) to be shut. How are you planning on getting to the start if this road is closed ?

    I'm 604, which is a result.

However, my mate who I'm doing it with is 9009, and we're quite a similar standard, so I've got no idea how we're going to meet up........

Just drop back to his pen. There should only be 20 or so mins difference

Looks like it might be a bit longer than 20 minutes, this has now been posted on the official website

    This year: staggered start times!

In order to spread out the flow of participants on the route and provide you with maximum comfort, race starts will be staggered between 7 am for the first ones and 8.30 am for the last ones.

The starting areas will be open at 6 am.
However, to avoid you from waiting too long in the starting area, scheduled times and the closing of access to the different starting areas will be staggered.

Starting area Number Time recommended to enter starting area Starting area closed at:
    1 1 to 1000 6h to 6h30 6:45:00
    2 1001 to 2000
    3 2001 to 3000 6h to 6h45 7:00:00
    4 3001 to 4000
    5 4001 to 5000 6h to 7h 7:15:00
    6 5001 to 6000
    7 6001 to 7000 6h to 7h15 7:30:00
    8 7001 to 8000
    9 8001 to 9000 6h to 7h30 7:45:00
    10 9001 to 10 600
    11 10 601 to 12 300 6h to 7h40 8:00:00
    12 12 301 to 14 000

    • Identify the location of your starting area beforehand.
    • You must respect your scheduled time: if you are late you will refused access to your starting area.
    • Present your bib and your number plate to the stewards.
    • Listen to the safety instructions attentively

    Yikes! That's bad news.

Not only will I have to get out of bed much earlier, it looks like my mate will start over an hour after me, and I'm not allowed to go into his pen........

Can you not drop back? Thought you could go backwards but not forwards.

I doubt it, because if everyone started doing that, some pens would become more crowded than others. I would imagine, they'd only let you enter your pen.

But I'll fire off an email to them and ask what options I've got, you never know!

I think they've let people drop back in the past but not jump forwards. Last year, the people marshalling the pens hardly glanced at your number, so I'd have thought you'd be ok. It's always safer to ask though.

Worst case - just fake a mechanical before you cross the start line and then wait for your mate to come through then cross the start line together :)

    This is genius!

Now I just have to work out what kind of mechanical will take me about an hour to fix! Broken chain perhaps?!

  • Has anyone in the UK had trouble getting the medical certificate completed? I dropped of the form at the surgery on Tuesday, popped in yesterday to check if it's ready and was told there's a 4 week turnaround time i.e. the 16th of July !?!
The receptionist was not very helpful and was not willing to commit whether it'll will be in time. I have private insurance throught Axa but not sure that'll help. Any suggestions?

Weird. Why does it take so long? They just have to look at you then sign a 3 line letter.

I visit my doctor once a year, just for this. He looks me up and down for 5 seconds, then finds the old file on his computer and reprints it with this year's date. Simples!

    (This is in France).

Hmm, don't say that, this is my mission for this week. Worse case I was guessing that the scrutiny can't be that tight can it? If something looks vaguely official....

Re medical certificates, I've heard a reliable source that as long as it looks like a medical certificate it will do.

lol ... I also heard those rumours :)

After doing some research I came across the following: http://www.sportsmedicalcertificates.co.uk. It's not free but by the sounds of it some GPs would charge you anyway. It seems as if they turn things around fairly quickly, might give them a try if I don't get joy from our surgery.

Just found out I'm starting in the 3rd pen :D Hopefully all that training in the Surrey hills was enough!

Probably because in France it's a legal requirement* to have a medical certificate for just about everyone who runs, cycles, swims or plays football or even ping-pong as a sport, so a doctor is quite used to doing the paperwork. But the greater mystery is why a French GP will charge at most 23 euros (£20) while British GP's can't be bothered to get out of bed in the morning if they are earning less than £50 or £60 for five minutes work.

It's worth pointing out that the certificate is valid for a year, so next time try and get one done in November or December and it will cover you for a whole cycling year.
