Brotherton oozes knowledge and with years of radio experience deserves to oust Hugh Porter from his BBC spot because he is much much worse than P&P.

that may be so "but in the sport of professional bike racing" who is he? Can he tell "former New Zealand road race champion Big Julian Dean" from "the Little Prince Cunego?"

Should we run a book on how many times Hugh Porter prefixes a sentence with "Now then..." ?

I enjoyed 5 Live's Tour preview last night, Colin Murray had obviously done a bit of research and (unless it was in the first few minutes that I missed) there was no reference to doping at all in a one hour show!

Colin Murray is great. Doesn't know great deal about cycling, but is such a decent bloke and a good presenter. Actually met him before and he came across really well.

I don't mind Hugh Porter actually. As great as the Phil and Paul-isms are, I can't really imagine anyone worse for commentating. Without fail, they make crucial mistakes in every stage. Quite a funny moment in last year's Tour when Vanendert breaks clear on that cat 3 hill-top finish in the first week. For literally two minutes they think it's Van den Broeck and then sheepishly say something about them changing places on the road when they work it out.

Anyway, I remember Matt Dawson from last year's 5 Live Tour preview - wasn't such a fan. He came across like he'd done literally no research, knew nothing about cycling, but was just obsessed with the suffering element of cycling. Get over it. Pro cycling hurts, now move on.

Surely if the Beeb wanted an ex-rugby player who is into their cycling, they'd have brought Lawrence Dallaglio along?! He's cycled a few miles since he stopped lying all over the opposition's ball on the rugby pitch! They could have added his cycling buddy, Freddie Flintoff too!

Actually quite like Phil and Paul. They're an institution.

    So's Broadmoor!

Love this guys, yes they make mistakes, yes they love lance, yes the heads of states are still up there - but how could you hate.

Also big fan of the very slick ITV4 highlights. Fairly sure last couple years on big mountain stages they do extended shows so you do not miss too much action.

The cycling media have been banging that particular drum for over 100 years now. Why should Dawson be any different? Even on here we have a 'race face' thread and you'll see fans who think that every other stage should be 250km with five mountains.

Every other stage? Lightweights, back in the day every stage was like that ;)

I've never read a word about him planning to retire, but Liggett's now 68- I wonder how Sherwen (56) would be with another presenter.

I've grown up listening to Phil and Paul. I can't imagine enjoying it with any other presenters, but then I thought that about Murray Walker and James Hunt doing F1 commentary, but in retrospect the Martin Brundle/David Coulthard combo worked well there.

So, what I'm saying (I think) is don't take away Phil and Paul, they're great, but I will look forward to their replacements when the time comes.

Don't watch this if you don't want to know what happened in the Dauhiné this year. But otherwise, here is an example of Paul Sherwen commentating with someone other than Phil. Dauphiné Stage 7 on YouTube

I used to think they were sort of endearing but that's gone now. They are a couple of irritating morons, especially Phil, who is just an utter and total knobhead.

No mention of Lance either, funny that.

They were on fire today. Everyone who set off was a potential winner, they fawned over Big George and Levi. I sincerely believe they both wear USPS/Discovery thongs.

Oh crap - I'd forgotten all about Boisson-Hagen and Voickler. Do you think he does it on purpose, to be annoying/different?

Evans used a higher cadence like Lance did apparently.

    No mention of EPO though.

I understand it is a difficult job, but they have become a little sad.

Phil gets more things wrong than right, and Paul seems to just fix Phil's mess.

Of course,I'm "on the rivet," so I probably have this all wrong.

The tedious Texan was mentioned on the highlights show, by Gary Imlach. Was talking about the moral boost to the car crash that is RSN.

Soccer is an old English term to distinguish Assocciation Football from other types of football such as Rugby FootbalL

Any way back to Phil and Paul, there is the odd occasion when they disagree such as when Andy Schlecked his chain and Contador didn't wait, Vino's return etc. The ensuing discussions are usually quite good as they lose themselves in the issue and forget the audience. They are knowledgeable but, they commentary is not satisafactory to anyone who has been following the 'sport of professional bike racing' for years.

    It's Eurosport for me.

There's reason this is called the ANNUAL P&P thread, we have the same discussion every year.

Of course people who are interested enough to join a forum will cringe at their commentary, but we're the ones who sign up to Eurosport because we appreciate the commentary on there.

Your average Joe Freeview isn't bothered about that, and P&P suit them just fine.

Although Phil and Paul are likely guilty of most of the sins mentioned in this annual thread, one of the several things they have going for them is 'history'. That, together with an engaging enthusiasm still and an abhorrence of periods of silence. They were in at the beginning of this GT coverage game on the telly in this country - was it channel 4 then all those years ago? Eurosport and the others since are, let us not forget, upstarts. Noobies. Heck, I was grateful to them then. Still am.

Sherwen just unleashed "de rigueur" into his commentary.
