Early I know. Just heard this gem on ITV4.

"They maybe should learn from the women's race....The early worms were....er...the sucessful ones"

Phil and Paul make more mistakes then in the past but they have been the voice of cycling since the early-80's and I really enjoy them commentating.

The fact that all things mentioned above were made in a pre-recorded commentary cannot bode well for the upcoming three weeks :|

Normally I get to watch quite a lot of the Tour live on Eurosport but business is a bit crap this year so will be working a lot during July which means that the ITV highlights programme is probably going to make up the majority of my TDF fix.

    Oh dear.

But, the ITV highlights show is superbly put together. If you sit down expecting to hate the commentary and looking for faults, you will hate it and find faults - same with every other commentary.

Yeah this - Live Coverage on ES (with illegal english commentary feed on 10 sec delay if you re a proper expat), ITV 4 for Highlights!

Also agree that the 7pm show is great, one of my favorite TV shows full stop. I like Imlach, Bordman and Ned Boulting is a legend. It is wince worthy though some of the Phil & Paul dribble, still I appreciate they are to many the 'sound' of the Tour and they certainly add an enthusiasm and urgency to the proceedings.
You can't beat Harmon and Kelly in my book though.

Yep agree about the 4 highlights. I've taken the X-Box to work so I can watch the stages in the afternoon on Eurosport, via Sky go. Then each evening enjoy Imlach, Boulting and Boardman. Phil and Paul can't spoil it as I'll already have seen stage. At least with the USADA case they may may be able to restrain themselves on the constants mentions of the unmentionable.

    True dat, Sonny.

The Dream Team for me would have to be Dave & Sean for the live commentary: Gazza, Chris and Ned for the after-show party. How can we make this happen?

Yes, Phil and Paul might be regarded as the "voices of The Tour", but their "enthusiasm and urgency" are too much like what you get from pantomime dames in panto...

Should have made myself clear, I often watch the ITV highlights, sometimes in addition to the live show (because i'm a nerd and because my Mrs enjoys it). It's a brilliant show, except for all the bloody adverts and Phil and Paul. I have a love hate thing with those two, they are the soundtrack to so many great memories but they are really getting beyond their sell by date now. I can pretty much predict exactly what they are going to say at any point and the mistakes and US love in is just getting too much. I also read that this year they will be broadcasting on a new network in the states, to a much wider audience so their commentary is going to be even more dumbed down.

Will be interested to see if they stop banging on about 'Lance' now that he's pretty much guilty as sin. I doubt it though...

Didn't realise Eurosport was now on Sky Go, can have a sneaky watch on my I-phone now whilst at work

They'll never stop. And big George. And that stupid bottle that opens both ends!

I'm sure they used to be better, but I find it really difficult to listen to them for more than 20mins.

In 2010, me and my girlfriend had a daily 'best Phil and Paul quote' competition and added it to the wallchart we had with the stage winners and the jersey holders. THere were some absolutely golden ones, and we had a little pad that we wrote them in and filled quite a bit.

I was looking forward to this last year again, but I thought that they weren't nearly as funny, just sort of samey.

Really looking forward to the Ned and Chris bits though, last year when they were demonstrating drafting or something, and Chris was merrily cycling along chatting to the camera, and Ned is behind all over the bike trying to keep up, classic. I love Ned, he is a really good presenter, he seems like a genuine fan of it all.

I used to think P&P were great commentators.

Then I learned about bike racing and realised what inane bollox they talked most of the time.

They appeal to the 3-week-in-July cycling fans but as soon as you have any understanding of what's actually going on then you realise that they don't.

Was thinking the same but I reckon they'll just stick their fingers in their ears and pretend they haven't heard about it.
  • WELL past their best. The ITV4 highlight package is excellent though, but if I can watch the live coverage I'll have it on Eurosport.

I just love them. It's like getting the artificial Christmas tree and homemade ginger haired angel down from the loft at Christmas.

Come on we all have our favourite sayings, mine's "The Heads of State..."

I predict "Big" will be the sole preserve of Jens Voigt this Tour. It used to be the preserve of Julian Deans who may have also have been prefixed with "Former New Zealand national champion..." He certainly got his money's worth out of his national title

To me the P+P show is part of the TDF, as is the sunflower shots and the corn field cut to look like a tractor... :) bring them on inane comments and all...

It could be worse. Mark Lawrensen could have been a cyclist instead of a footballer.

Dunno what was more pitiful... England's passing or Lawro's attempts at being funny.

yeah but when they were talking about one of the player's wives being a ballerina, and he said she was holding out for 2-2, i thought that was pretty good, despite the rubbish he had previously spouted. Credit where credit's due etc...
