    I've been thinking about this.

If we're talking purely the Tour, I'd dump Merckx and go for Armstrong.

I've also been thinking about the strongest team ever assembled for a tilt at the overall, and I couldn't get past one of the US Postal teams in the early '00s.

If we're talking actual teams, then surely the best has to be the La Vie Claire squad from 1986. They got 1st, 2nd, 4th and 7th. They won 6 stages, the KoM, best young rider, the combination jersey and obviously the team competition. Yikes!

And they had the best looking team kit!

I went for Merckx over Armstrong as he also won the green jersey, polka dot jersey and more stages. While 7 is obviously more than 5, that's down to longevity rather than ability, and Merckx was grossly over-riden and burnt out by 31.

    For sure.

Armstrong was so reliable and consistent when winning the Tour. There were only two Tours you could say he was troubled in.

1999, since I don't think even he knew he was that good, and 2003.

Merckx had plenty more ups & downs.

But this is a fantasy team - we're picking the team based on the best version of a rider rather than on career success right? Career consistency shouldnt come into it.

    *shrugs* I guess so.

You know you're going to get a Tour win with Armstrong.

You know you'll get ridiculously good racing with Merckx, that in all likelihood will be in your favour.

Can Armstrong come along as an *ahem* guest rider?

So does that also mean you can't speculate how good Merckx might have been if he wasn't over ridden?

Should it then be Garin as he has the largest winning margin? And he won half the stages as well!

My team for the 'combativity' prize:

    Bernard Hinault
    Sean Kelly
    Jose Beyaert
    Jose Barredo
    Walter Godefroot
    Freddy Maertens
    Briek Schotte
    Rik van Steenbergen
    Gino Bartali

'nails' the lot of them - they'd probably scare the $hit out of the competition or send Jose Beyaert around if they didn't submit. Even better if they held the race in April.....

quality team :) can't have Gino Bartali as well as the badger, they both won tours

Was that the year they had the battery ad on the back? Powered by Duracell or something?

You go and tell Hinault he's dropped then. I dare you.
