All Time TdF Dream Team

Not sure if this has been done before so apologies if it has. Inspired by listening to the pundits on 5 Live doing their all time UK football team last night - what would be your all time 9 man TdF team? The only restriction I would put is that you can only select one TdF winner to avoid people picking teams consisting of all the great TdF champs!

I'm having a think of mine and will post it shortly.

Probably showing my age here. You'll see Basso has never won the Tour, hence his inclusion

    GC: Merckx
    Sprinter - Cavendish
    Lead out man - Boonen
    Mountains - Virenque, Basso
    Domestiques - Wiggins, Voigt, Cancellara
    Mentalist - Cipolini

    Edit:
    DS - Cyrille Guimard

    No place for Sean Kelly?

Based on my limited knowledge that looks pretty good.

    I'm dropping Boonen for Kelly
Cipolini is out - Voight takes the mentalist role
    Indurain for Wiggins
Robert Millar in for the Mountains

Can't pick Indurain. He's won a tour or two ;).

Sorry missed that rule. I was thinking of him purely in the TT specialist role.....

    Indurain out then....Cancellara back in.....

Surely you would just have Boonen and Kelly with no Cippo? Wouldn't have Wiggins as a domestic though, much rather have Tony Martin.

No use having Boonen in a Tour team when you can have De Vlaemink.

    Team Leader - Merckx

Do you think? Can't see De Vlaemink riding for anyone but De Vlaemink. Or is that the idea?

    Merckx

    Zabel
    Cipollini

    Virenque
    Van Impe

    Jalabert
    Kelly
    Mottet

    Durand

Another day I might take Hinault, and make other changes; initially I had 16-17 names.

Durand is there to lighten things up and to take both the combativity prize and the lanterne rouge!

    For the prologue?

and the suicide attacks in the last few kms.

No-one seems to have gone for any controversial choices yet. Shame, would be good to get some arguments going

On the footie one last night they had to pick Best as a striker as he couldn't get a place on the wings!

If you want crazy breaks, swap you 2nd best climber for Chiappucci...

He was going to be my original choice until I remembered Herrera.

More because you need someone who can sit on the front of the peloton for 100km+ day after day.

I'll have Moser or De Vlaeminck or Zulle do that for me :). Canc can chip in when he wants to.

Another fail, Van Impe won the TdF in 1976!
