    I've realised I haven't up dated you on by Bruges trip

    Friday:
    Leffe Royale
    Brugse Zot
    Omer
    Westmalle Dubbel
    Waterloo Tripel (bought the glass)
    Bourgogne de Flanders
    De Garre Tripel
    Straffe Hendrik Quad
    Achel

    Saturday:
    De Ranke XX Bitter
    Perfect Day
    Barbar Blond
    Silly Swaf
    Troubadour Speciale
    Keyte Jubileum
    Torpah 30
    Kwak
    Delirium Tremens
    Rochefort
    De Koninck
    Dronkenput Tripel

    Sunday (Brussels - watching rugby/football in a bar called the Six Nations where the barmaid asked if I was drinking my way through the menu - yes, I was):
    La Corne Tripel (bought the glass)
    Zinne Bir
    Val Dieu
    Westmalle Tripel
    Vedett
    Jambe du Bois (barmaids recommendation)
    Leffe Dubel

    Carry homes (with glass)
    Rochefort
    Coresendonk

    Restaurants: Den Dyver and 't klein geoegen

    Best in show - Troubador - a favourite with me and my friends across two different beers. Otherwise I found Straffe Hendrik Quad very drinkable and De Garre a real stomach punch. Waterloo Tripel was an instant classic and Kwat and La Corne rule the glass market.

    I did at one point say 'Have you heard of the Tour of Flanders', as an idea to return.

    Good session, that Saturday! Strong effort.
  • I drank about 7 steins in Bruge Square and foolishly had mules for dinner after doing a long loop from Ghent. Anyway I came out of a nightclub at about 3am and vomited on my shoes aswell as a lads who was having sex behind some bins in an alley. I bought him a drink though and he was cool with it.

    That's my experience of Bruges drinking.

    It was during that 40 degree heatwave when the TDF was on in 2015. Don't think I peed for 2 weeks on that cycle holiday. SO much dehydration.

    Because 7 steins certainly helps you to rehydrate :lol:
  • First cycling holiday with mates. I got giddy :D I'm in the process of booking this years which is pretty much an anti-clockwise tour of Belgium, so I'll be asking for pointers soon enough ;)

    Sounds like a grand night out SSS. I would avoid the donkeys but chapeau for sharing a night on the ale in Belgium with us.

    It did turn out to be one of the best nights of the trip. But I forgot the age old advice of never mixing seafood and beers I'm afraid.

    This is next year trip for me and the missus. Distance are only advisory for now. Made the mistake last time of doing silly distances such as a ride from Avesnes-sur-helpe in France to Bastogne through the Ardennes in 40+ degree heat. The tarmac was melting at points.

    13th Septemer – Home -> Hull
    14th September – Zeebrugge -> Tournai 100km
    15th September – Tournai -> Valenciennes -> Mons 80km
    16th September – Mons -> Avesnes-sur-Helpe 56km
    17th September - Avesnes-sur-Helpe -> Dinant 83km
    18th September – Dinant -> Leuven 90km
    19th September – Leuven -> Rotselaar -> Heist-op-den-Berg -> Nijlen -> Mechelen 66km
    20th September – Mechelen -> Temse -> Lokeren -> Ghent 72km
    21st September – Ghent -> Bruges 52km
    22nd September – Bruges -> Torhout -> Ostende -> Zeebrugge 72km
    23rd September – Hull -> Home

  • Some St Bernardus 8 tonight. Also recently had some back in the promised land ie Flanders, and it wasn't so good. The Tripel was back to very good reaching excellent, so what's with the Prior?

    I'm doing a beer tasting at the start of April...

    Got my IPAs, stouts etc all down. So far I've got a Duchesse de Bourgogne to represent the Belgians (I love it but I mostly included it for the look on my mates faces when they try it...).

    I've also got a bottle of an American brett beer (Logsdon oak aged bretta) which I expect will be extra dry and saison-y, so fits into the Belgian style category (I've had it for a year - should be good :) ). Might also get a saison dupont and an orval for comparison... but that might be too many beers!

    Looking for a good suggestion for a dubbel or tripel? I've got access to a couple of really good bottle shops so it doesn't necessarily need to be UK supermarket common, but does need to be available in the UK.

    Can't beat the Westmalle Tripel if you ask me. One of the finest beers on the planet.

    Seconded. Also, if you are after a dubbel, then Westmalle hits the spot. One of my favourites, and like the tripel, also quite easily available. Rochefort 6 is also good, but for me the Westmalle edges it.

    I'm also a fan of the Westmalle. I know it's not to everyone's taste but I also really like the Leffe Royale. It's not marketed as a dubbel but the alcohol content is up at 7.5%.

    There's no point in discussing Belgian beer. There's nothing better than Duvel (apparently now available on tap)! End of discussion.

    Duvel is one of my all time favourite beers. But not when I fancy a gueuze, kriek, old bruin, Flemish red, Dubbel or Tripel....

    My comment was not meant to be taken entirely seriously! I heard that the taste of Duvel on tap is not the same...

    Do you get 'off' bottles of this?
    Tried it after you lot were raving about it but was really underwhelmed. Not nasty, but really wouldn't have wanted another. And I'm easily pleased usually.

    I'm loving Vedett at the moment. Very clean and crisp. Treated myself to a couple of bottles whilst watching the rugby with hot spicy chicken wings post ride yesterday. Bliss.

    Apologies to Mad Malx and others. Yes, I think Belgian Beer might be heading towards a brand rather than beers from breweries that might be good. The hype might be overtaking the reality. Which is not good news.
    The best beer is the beer in your hand at the time, if the moment is right. Jupiler quaffed by the half is great when watching the bike racing on the telly on a Friday evening, other beers are great at other times.

    I love Tripel Karmeliet and that's available in Waitrose.
    I too am a fan of good 'ol Westmalle.

    Troll.... :mrgreen: (if you are referring to karmeliet, which is the king of belgian beers. other than duvel).

    I have moved on though - to american IPA's from small craft brewries or basically any craft IPA north of 5.5%.
