I think that if the thread of the moment is to be believed, then everything posted here is BS, as you're all reading 'Club', 'Mayfair' and 'Men's World'.

It's a pretty generous use of the word 'reading'.0 -

A Pirate Of Exquisite Mind, about William Dampier.
Can anyone tell me why pirate books are so good?Pictures are better than words because some words are big and hard to understand.

Would highly receommend.
A very enjoyable trilogy. I'm steering clear of the Hollywood films because we all know what they do to a good story. It/they star Daniel Craig and anyone who saw The Golden Compass as well as reading that trilogy will know it was butchered and he was one of the stars of that too.
He's an OK Bond though.
I've been reading the Tom Clancy Jack Ryan books "Hunt for Red October", "Clear And Present Danger" etc recently. Unfortunately I'm not reading them in order and I've just finished Red Rabbit which is one of the earlier ones (Thatcher The Milk Snatcher and Ronald RayGun as PM and prez). Cold War-tastic!! That reminds me, I've got to take it back to the pub I nicked it from.FCN 3: Raleigh Record Ace fixie-to be resurrected sometime in the future

Really didn't rate that one all that much.
Currently should be reading the first of the Game of Thrones books and the Call of the Wild by Jack London, except I dropped my Kindle at the weekend -- anyone know if the screen from the (cheaper) Kindle will fit my broken Kindle keyboard? Really rather annoyed with myself for the clumsinessSometimes parts break. Sometimes you crash. Sometimes it’s your fault.0 -
Just getting into George Pelecanos. He was recommended to me and so far so good. I'm on his Derek Strange series of books at the moment, just finished Right as Rain (the first one) but had already done his most recent which was a pre-quel! It's all about a black Washington DC private dick. Excellent reading and only having read the first one and thought "this reminds me of The Wire" did I find out that he'd done a lot of writing and production on The Wire.Trail fun - Transition Bandit

Just finished 'How Cav won.......' by Ned Boulting which is a codicil to his TdF book and worth the £2.74 that I paid on Kindle. I have the Danny Bent book loaded but have yet to start. Beside the bed is 'Naseby' by Glenn Ffoard which is a detailed account of the battle with particular attention to the impact of the campaign on the populace. As I live in the county this approach to the story makes it particularly vivid. The older I get the faster I was0

Apparently it was inspired by Iain Sinclair's poem 'Lud Heat' - Sinclair has a bit of a reputation for somewhat impenetrable writing on London. For my money, it's rather too interested in symbolism and anti-enlightenment occultism at the expense of a good story.1985 Mercian King of Mercia - work in progress (Hah! Who am I kidding?)

Just finished
Manual of Darkness. Really enjoyed the first half. Second half was not so good but still definitely worth reading.
and
The Sisters Brothers.
A real page turner. I finished it in two sittings. I think whilst the story is simple the style with which it is written makes it enjoyable to read.
With regards to submarine books I liked
The terrible hours. A tale of a man's fight to get the US navy to adopt his solution to extricate submariners from their would be sunken tombs.0 -

GB84 is an outstanding book. I found it quite hard going and sometimes difficult to follow, but it really captured the misery of the miners strike. Well worth reading.
Enjoyed The Damned United and intend to read the Tokyo Trilogy at some point soon.0
