Yes, something like that. Inner Ring wrote about it during the Tour: http://inrng.com/2011/07/popularity-the ... he-public/

They don't like him for other reasons too I suspect.

Casar's not Spanish, but he does hurt dogs, so that'll do.

One thing's for sure, there can't be many other riders in the peloton that divides opinion so much...?! Apart from Contador perhaps.

Haven't been round here long? :P

Easier to pick riders who don't divide opinion on forums...

Gilbert perhaps? Though not if you head over to cyclingnews.

Not sure if Evans is still divisive? Her certainly wasn't popular with most untill his rainbow season.

    Fedrigo?

I wasn't saying that lots of rider's don't divide opinion, but the TV for and against is pretty darn polarised!

But then pro cycling forums are largely frequented by handbags at dawn types :P

According to Cycle Sport, his nickname in the English speaking part of the peloton is Fuckler. The other riders really don't like him for some reason.

One reason is probably the fact that many pros want the racing to be as easy as is possible, as frequently as is possible, especially when they find it hard to stay in contention, and so they don't appreciate riders like Voeckler attacking almost for the sake of it. There is a telling interview with Cavendish on YouTube where he is whining about how hard racing can be, referring to 'some French guy attacking even when they don't know why they are attacking'. I guess some would prefer to ride a 'race' where no one attacks and instead everyone ride along getting a healthy glow before having a bunch sprint at the end.

From what I've heard via pro's who've raced with him, he attacks a lot, but when he's in breaks he'll sit in and not do much. Until the cameras appear.

Surely according to the BikingBernie scale, Voeckler must be a doper because he finished fourth in the Tour last year without losing weight?

Except he's French of course and we all know they wouldn't know what to do with performance enhancing substances if they ever found any.

Mostly, French riders just attack to get on the television, they're not trying to win, just to be a local celebrity. Unlike the others French teams don't have to bother with getting results as they're promised a Tour place regardless of how incompetent they are. Just get on TV and beat on about panache. This is why proper racers like Chavanel leave France.

You saw it in the Waalse pijl this year and last year's Tour in bits.

He's obviously pretty good - engine wise.

He just needs to sort his head out.

On one of last weekend's stages of the Dauphine, the camera was panning across the bunch on the climb with a few km to go. TV was sitting about 8th wheel back, making the same effort as everyone else. Once he realised the camera was on him, he started gurning and puffing.

I don't think that finishing fourth in the Tour means that Voeckler 'must' be a doper any more than Wiggins winning the Dauphine means that he 'must' be a doper. Anyhow, hasn't Voeckler always being a small, skinny guy? He also held the yellow jersey in the Tour for 10 days back in 2004, and held the best young rider jersey for 14 days, so he showed talent for the big tours from an early age. It is not as if he underwent a miraculous transformation after being a complete also-ran in the big tours, like Armstrong, Riis, Wiggins and so forth.

Do you want a reminder of his Brabantse Pijl win? Solo for a long time in terrible conditions. Classy and courageous. Put the Belgians to shame on their own territory.

He was also 8th in Flanders, 4th in LBL and 5th in Amstel.

Should I repeat the last line for you all? Ok, good.

Exactly - you think he's a doper then!

An excellent piece of Francophobic generalisation. Well done!

I wonder, do you think that the 'wildcard' system has the same effect on 'Wops' and 'Dagos' when they ride their home tours.

It certainly applies to Italian riders in the Giro (surely using 'Wops' and 'Dagos' would only be appropriate had Rich called the French riders 'Frogs' or similar?).

Slight error - it was Fridays stage, a few km to go and Vichot has gone solo

Ah, I see. So xenophobic generalisations are only xenophobic generalisations if you also use derogatory terms for the nations involved. Thanks for clearing that up!
