You're doing awesome anyway! If I was to make a thread like this I would probably stop posting on it after a couple of days. Keep it up, keep riding and the inevitable will happen - you will become lean, fit and a strong rider!

I'm not sure if you've tried to make a yearly plan yet but give it a go if you haven't already, buy a month by month calendar and near the end of the month write down all the rides you plan to do during the next month. It gives you a rigid plan to stick to, but do it in pencil so that you can erase/change it if other life events get in the way. Tick off all the rides that you completed so that at the end of the month you can see how much you've acheived.

Also on the same calendar write down other stuff that you need to do on your days off to benefit your riding, e.g. 'visit the grocers' so you remember to get a metric fucktonne of vegetables, or 'go to bed 3 hours early' so you remember to get plenty of kip so you feel fresh for your next ride, etc...

  • Thanks Mwesteteyn and Herbsman. I use Daily Mile to track the mileage and iCal on my iPad. Route wise, I have routes posted on my site, www.renebruun.com which will expand. Each has a number and my niece and nephew have to agree on a number and text me each say, that decides the route, but they don't know if a short or long route. (they wanted to be part of the effort!)

When I reach my goal I want to do a charity event. In 1912 Robert L. Chapman cycled around Ireland on his push bike with a box camera, capturing life along the way. Being a photographer also, 100 years later, I'd like to do the same journey... Well, its a dream more then anything, I want to lose 70-100lbs first!
  • Quick update, I lost another 1.8lbs in the last week, my goal for the month is 10lbs. That brings me to a total of 8.4lbs so far, so I should achieve it! But for the bet with my friends for a cash kitty we put together, winner takes all end of week 4, next Saturday. There is enough for a set of new tires but only 1lb separating us. It's anyone's game at this stage.

    Morning Sir,

Well didn't get to cycle on Monday, cycled yesterday just under 13 miles but took 36 minutes off my time, did it in 51 minutes which is a result for me! ;) Winds are terrible today, so might make this my second rest day this week. First 4 weeks weigh in finishes on Saturday, I have a self set target of 10lbs for the first 4 weeks, last Saturday I had lost 8.4lbs since I started, so really need to push it this week.

    How's things yourself?

If you have under 2 mins to spare, read a funny insight as a Noob to cycling on my blog. Thanks...

Ooooh I fancy a ride! LOL

Things are good here! My personal aim for this year is to cycle 5000+km so I have been getting as many rides as possible in. I'm up to 890km for 2012 so far.

Good to see your making progress and taking rest days, and 51 minutes for 13 miles is a great improvement! That's about the distance and pace for my commute to work which I know can be pretty darn tiring.
  • 5k + is a good goal right, I'm sure you'll have no problem achieving that.
  • Quick update: So the first 4 weeks have passed and I've met my target for the month of losing 10lbs, having lost as of yesterday 10.2lbs. In the last 2 weeks I've set 3 goals and achieved them. First was to cycle a marathon, 26 miles, I smashed it doing 35.16 miles in 3hrs 6 mins. Next goal was to beat my 13 mile record of 1hr 28mins, last week I smashed that down to 51 minutes. Finally today I decided to beat my distance record of 35.16 miles in 3hrs 6 mins, I cycled 40.33 miles in 2hrs 59mins, not bad for a guy who a month ago was almost 300lbs and only cycled for an A-B commute!

Again, that's for the continued support.

Great stuff René! 2hrs59 is not bad at all for 40 miles! You can be rightfully proud of that. And that's only a month in... think of what you can achieve next!!
  • I honestly think I'm only able to do it with the feedback and support from here. In the past I always let myself down, but with you guys behind me, I don't want to let you down, so I work harder!

I'm undertaking a big challenge this year also: http://cyclescotland.blogspot.com

I know lots of people do Lands End - John O'Groats all the time, but the idea of riding just the entire length of scotland in the 5 days is pretty daunting, and I'm training hard to get into shape. And hopefully we'll be able to raise some good money for some very deserving charities.
  • Sounds amazing, nice way to see the country but the hills in the highlands.... Man they will be tough going! I wish you every success.

Hey! you are approaching some people LSD ride pace there!
Already acceptable for AUDAX, CTC group rides etc etc.

If you feel motivation falling get out on a group ride/event.

So I fell of the wagon, or should that be bike last week for a few days, had some junk food and a good few beers, but it was totally worth it as now I feel bad and plan on training harder! Especially since I added 3 pounds as a result! I also got some Whey Protein on advice from a friend here, I guess my who diet nutritional thing is all wrong, so arranging to meet a specialist in a few weeks and have a consultation [thanks Alex].

    So thats all for now.

Oh, and here is a short video of my last ride! [Note, this is NOT porn!] he he

Mailed him today, €185 for the session, so need to wait a few weeks as that's what I get on unemployment benefit, of which rent and bills come out of.

Updated my blog with 2 new entries. Thanks to everyone here for support and following my Twitter account @Bruunloss as this is real helping with the motivation and feedback and advice. So just a quick update if you don't have time to read my bike blog www.renebruun.com

Last week I did my longest cycle yet, 41.25 miles which is just under 65km in 2h 57m This for me is a personal best, not just in distance but a mental challenge. Last year when I cycled just as a way of commuting because with my anxiety I cannot travel in cars, buses, trains, planes etc, my 11 mile cycle to work, with my 8 hour break and then 11 miles back home was hard work for me. If you even asked me 6 weeks ago when I started cycling for sport if I planned on breaking a 20 mile distance I would have said, yeah, give me a few months though. However I then broker 35 miles when I planned on 30 and twice in the last two weeks did over 40 miles on each day. So goal before end of March is to hit 50 miles.

I'm not doing this for sport as such, just to lose weight, but I bought all the right cycling gear, proteins, etc safety gear as I want to do it right, and if, sorry, WHEN, I reach my goal of 70-100lbs weight loss, I might buy a proper road bike and cycle for sport. Oh, and last night, I went and took my first '12.5 mile' run 6 weeks ago which took me 1hr 28m and did it in 47m 57s! Nice!

Say time is 48mins=48/60=0.8hours 12.5/0.8=15.6mph average speed which means a marathon is done in 1 hour.40mins

Do you realise that you are running faster than you're riding....How do you feel that you weren't picked for the Olympics. ? :D

Funny thing is I can't run, if I even ran 25 yards I'd be out of breath and exhausted! LOL

Sure are, sorry for the late reply, I was dead for 2 days after St. Patrick's! LOL. Have you ever cycled around Newry? I challenged myself to cycle to Drogheda before and then back, 62.5miles, Dundalk adds approx 17-20 miles more and same again to Newry. Was thinking might get the Enterprise up to Newry one day, and start a cycle from there back to Dublin. I'd have to overnight somewhere as my legs wouldn't be strong enough to do it all in one day, or maybe... Just a thought....

Quick update, again thanks everyone for your support. Put a few pounds back on after St Patricks weekend, but back to 283.2lbs but still 14.2lbs down from 6.5 weeks ago. Training properly again now and improved diet. No computer at the moment as in repairs so no video updates to my channel, relying on iPad at the moment and iPhone.

Customised the bike a little, new custom break pads, changed tyres from Kevlar commuter tyres to Bontrager (can't remember the name correctly) road tyres and getting new pedals and cycling shoes in a day or two. My 3rd cycling jersey arrived, made a mistake thinking 2xl like my tshirts, so ordered 4xl and yet, it appears to be the same size as the 2xl jerseys! Since unemployed I can't buy anymore so just need to make sure I can drop the other 82lbs before they fit me, then I'll be a proud man!
