I'm used to pretty rigid game experiences like those of WoW etc... where you go down a specific path. Skyrim is far more complicated. The combat system seems clunky at the moment, having to bind spells to your hands. And I still haven't really figured out how to tell if the mob I'm about to lay in to is around my level or not.
Its kinda fun though, such a huge game, lots of possibility.
You on Xbox?
Any way of changing weapon without having to effectively pause and go into a menu.
When a dude pops up at me when I'm creeping about with my bow out, I don't really like pausing to change to a sword.0 -
Nope, PC. You can add spells to a favourites menu, and then bind them to the number keys for quick access. But I still haven't got the knack of conjuring a fire elemental, then quickly switching back to a destruction spell. The result is that I die. A lot. So recently I've just been exploring. Theres books *everywhere* in this game. I've managed to collect a library in my house, but will never get round to reading a fraction of them.0

You can mark spells or weapons as favourites, then you get a quick menu (q on the PC; don't know what button on consoles) to equip or unequip any of them. It still pauses, but lets you switch a hell of a lot faster than going through the full inventory or spells screen.0

I know. Can't believe PC gamers are still having to contend with that.
With us loser console gamers it's a little more (though not much) understandable.0 -
Have to say, as an aside, I didn't find portal especially hilarious.
It was fun. Occasionally raised a rye smile but that was about it.
The puzzles were great though.
Could have ramped up the difficulty at the end though.0 -

I found it laugh out loud hilarious at points. GladOS is an inspired character. The parallel story of the 2-play coop is awesome too doubles the length of the game.0 -

ahhhh, warcraft 2
Recently bought a 1tb internal disc for steam. It's been downloading over 25gb this weekend alone. Re-ran through HL2: episode 1 and lost coast and going to continue through episode 2. Space marine however is right roaringly stompy - it's ace now I have power axe and lascannon. re-downloading l4d2 and company of heroes too... Lots of lovely time wasting.Le Cannon [98 Cannondale M400] [FCN: 8]

If you're going to re-play HL2 your should get the Cinematic Mod packs http://cinematicmod.com/ it brings the graphics and sound up a notch or two. I actually bought an extra HDD to play the mod when it first came out.I used to just ride my bike to work but now I find myself going out looking for bigger and bigger hills.0

Fallout 3 was better than Fallout New Vegas IMO. Oblivion has a better story than Skyrim.
Magic attacks work better in Skyrim than Oblivion it is also technically the better game. (For the person who asked) Oblivion is set 200 years before Skyrim at the end of the 3rd era. Skyrim is during the 4th era. Skyrim is not a direct sequel but does continue 200 years after Oblivion left off (that the Septim bloodline has died out, there was an elf uprising - in the books - and bad shit is happening).
Me? I no longer play Rift or Star Trek, I'm taking a pause with Star Wars (good game - needs Dev time). I'm only playing Skyrim at the moment. X-box 360. I don't regret it.Food Chain number = 4

Portal (the first game) had my favourite ever ending to a game. "Still Alive" is sublime.0

OK Skyrim update:
I'm level 10 already, and still haven't done any of the main quest. I'm guessing you only come into contact for dragons if you do that.
I'm pretty far down the companions storyline. I'm past the point *spoiler* where you become a werewolf *spoiler* They seem to rate me, though they keep saying I must be 'stronger than I look'. I set my character to very small so perhaps that's why.
Finding magic-y enemies much tough to deal with than fighty types. Have totally ignored the spells side and am now turbo at blocking, one handed fighting and sneaking.
Any tips?0 -

Try Dark Souls if you want a challenging game. It's set in a fantasy RPG-y world, but is far more of an action game than say Skyrim.
It's very difficult and can be very frustrating at times, but that's it's appeal. I've died dozens of times trying to kill one boss, but eventually you work out a strategy and when you do kill them there's a massive sense of satisfaction. It's kind of the antithesis of the COD games, which seem to take you quickly from one set piece to the next. With Dark Souls progress can be very slow!
It's a really good game though. Combat is particularly good. Each weapon has it's own moves and uses and fighting even the lowest baddies requires you to time your attacks and blocks just right. You can't rush it waving your sword around.
Plus it has a giant wolf that fights you with a sword in its mouth0 -
Got the Orange Box around xmas time. I started playing HL2 last week. I'm about halfway through and (dons flame-retardant/hev suit) I'm finding it a bit meh. Quite enjoyed HL back in the day, although Deus Ex was my fave of that era...
I've enjoyed playing through the Assassin's creed sequence, though0 -

I thought HL2 was the weakest part of the Orange Box

Oh, and the dragons start to appear once you complete the fourth quest in the main storyline, 'Dragon Rising'. It's worth getting up to that point even if you go no further yet, just so you can harvest the dragon souls to unlock shouts.0 -

Think you might have to explain that to me.
I'm quite enjoying sauntering about the place without a care in the world, not worrying about dragons.0 -
Pfft maxing out your Bow is the best. once your sneak goes up as well. you can take out caves easily 1/2 shotting enemies. Also very handy against Dragons.0

even if you are spotted their is a skill in archery which stuns enemies. Can keep them standing still and pile loads of arrows in the chump!0

OK,
Firstly, Skyrim, as with all Elder Scrolls, games works on the principle that the difficulty of enemies in the gaming World increases in line with the characters own progression. So if you go into a dungeon at level one you will have appropriately leveled baddies. Go in at level 30 and those baddies have all suddenly been promoted to badass Zombie-Ninja-Vikings, the worst kind.
That format can be boring as you never truly feel like you've improved as a character, or at least that was the problem with Oblivion. So Skyrim, in an attempt to keep things real, has pre-leveled baddies. This makes traversing the gaming nigh impossible at the early levels (I'd say 1 - 15). You'll notice the difference when you fight a Mammoth, Giant or Sabre Toorh Cat at level 5 and again at level 30.
With that in mind I've decided to leave the main quest (Windhelm, Solitude and the Greybeards missions but only after you learn to Shout and how to empower them) until I've visted and completed missions at all the other holds.
Dragons automatically spawn - you'll encounter more as you progress.
Level the archery skill nothing better than taking a Elf at from 50 paces with a Ebony bow and Deadric Arrow - that's how I deal with the magic badies. Also what race are you, different races have different resistance to magic. Bretons have a high resistance to magic.
Once you master magic with a character from a race that has a knack for these things, it's really fun.Food Chain number = 4
