As for the social commentary in WWZ, I thought it was brash, nonsensical rubbish based on misinformed judgemental stereotypes. There was no depth, or understanding to any of the characters, just your usual lightweight paint-by-numbers Hollywood-style one dimensional pawns.

I didn't care about any of the characters, but I don't think you were supposed too. It was written as a collection of interviews you couldn't develop a character in the same way as a normal book. I can see why people wouldn't like it, I enjoyed it though, something a bit different now I've finished 50 shades (joke)
