It's a good little whimsical read, isn't it? I was pleasantly surprised after being dissapointed with "the long earth".
I actually got the book a long time ago, with the intention of reading it whilst out in the alps, but I never got round to it.
Hmm, true, his condition is bound to start affecting him soon, sadly.

Aye, Dodger was a decent read. I was a bit puzzled by The Long Earth, it just didn't really seem to go anywhere. As far as his Discworld stuff goes, I keep buying them, but I've been a bit underwhelmed by them for a few years now, I prefer the earlier ones. Wonder how long he'll be able to continue writing for, given his condition.
I thought there was a lull in the Discworld series for a while, but I really enjoyed Snuff - even though it wasn;t as strong as earlier Watchmen based books.
Really liked the Tifanny Aching novels too. In hindsight, as I'm looking on the entire list on wikipedia, there's only a few books that I thought were weak - mainly Unseen Academicals, and Making Money.

Indeed, I love the Sam Vimes character.

Guess life would be (more) boring if we were all the same - I think there's been too many books set around Vimes & the Watch. Mort was my favourite, I reckon (I prefer the earlier books). I've not actually read Snuff yet, it's been sat in my pile of books waiting to be read for about 18 months now.

I've just read 'the secret race' by tyler Hamilton. even if you're not into road cycling (which i'm not really) it's an interesting read about how and what drugs they all did, frankly quite shocking in places!

In the middle of "reading" World War Z on audible at the moment. It's ok, I guess.
I certainly don't see how it got all the high praise. It's quite badly written (scripted?) in parts. I mean, the congressman section just isn't remotely believable, it's just stupid stereotype after stupid stereotype. And "I could care less". That phrase irks me when someone says it, but an actual writer? Oh come ON!

Like to read something educational while I'm away so I'me reading "Into The Jaws of Death: The Gallant Six Hundred of the St. Nazaire Raid, 28 March 1942" by Robert Lyman...... all good so far!

Limbered up on the plane out with Patriot Games which I'd managed to miss out from the rest of Tom Clancy's books.

There's a follow up to the long earth coming out in the next few days I believe, which would kind of make sense that it was really a setup for what follows.

    In Asda now for £9.

I put a Dan Brown on my kobo for mrs Ed to read whilst on maternity leave - it is unspeakably bad... Inferno just in case you were idly tempted, really just don't.

Just started World War Z after I found out it was written by Max Brookes, The Ultimate Zombie Survival Guide was genius. It's very good, more serious than the survival guide but from what I've heard it works a lot better as a book than a film. I spose for a start the book doesn't have Brad Pitt in...

Just started Refuge book 1 by David Dandridge. Bought it for £1.92 off kindle on a whim because I simply liked the cover. its a slightly odd mix of sci fi and fantasy, Dragons and Tanks with magic spells. Interesting so far definitely not something I would have bought normally but it has hooked me.

The survival guide was both funny and informative, loved it.

Well, after several weeks of page turning intrigue, scheming, sex and violence tonight's going to seem a bit odd with no Game Of Thrones to go with my little drinky, after finishing the last book this morning, and now I have to wait until next year at least to find out what happens next, grrrr.

Meanwhile, 1356 by Bernard Cornwell has been selected from the pile of books waiting to be read.

Slowly working my way through the Hyperion Cantos by Dan Simmons, Epic isnt quite enough to describe it, worked through Hyperion, The fall of Hyperion and currently about half way through Endymion, just cant get enough, its a story that not only spans a galaxy but also millenia, beautifully written and in such full detail.

The first book is a real slog to get through (there's a wiff of the Canterbury tales about it) and a bit on the dull side. The following books take a different turn and have a different feel to them IMO.

Some books are like that. I remember the first in Stephen Donaldsons "The Gap" series being a bit dull and uninteresting (he even admits it himself and apologizes for it at the back of the book) but it sets the scene for a fantastic series. Hyperions a bit like that.

Completed Shantaram for the second time recently. Quite a powerful book centering on an Ozzie jail breaker who ends up in Bombay and his story of beiong in the Mafia. Purportedly a novel based on his life it is genuinely gripping.

(Louis Walsh voice) I liked it. Just finished WWZ, thought it was good, bit of an odd one, not really much of a story, but plenty of interesting social commentary. Me and the Mrs have been discussing what the government are up to in The Walking Dead after reading WWZ. I wonder if zombies could ever happen... :?

Er, I take it you haven't been out in public in a while then? They're already everywhere. The Local Morrisons supermarket seems t thrive by employing them.

As for the social commentary in WWZ, I thought it was brash, nonsensical rubbish based on misinformed judgemental stereotypes. There was no depth, or understanding to any of the characters, just your usual lightweight paint-by-numbers Hollywood-style one dimensional pawns.

And that's how I describe it whilst I'm in a good mood
