It does seem that people are touchy and lack a sense of humour as well. Hmm, I might try and chart these personality traits, and see what the common Orange factor is.0 -
"So the general consensus is that they are very good". Really?0

Think we are going to have a CC thread where we can all slander Orange and see who can come up witht he best worst description and so on0

The five....I have one....
It's fine. It's not perfect but it's fun to ride and I can take it anywhere. I got it cheap and don't regret it. Would I get another?.... who knows, depends what I could get hold of to test (I had issues with demoing the bikes I wanted to) and also what I could get for my money elsehwere.
Ugly.....I guess that's personal preference, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that jazz, but when I'm riding it, I can't see it.Ride it like you stole it!0 -
The question isn't whether they're ugly, it's whether or not they're over hyped.0
-
-
yes then they're over-hyped coz they're so ugly to even consider paying that sort of coin for one.0
-
Overhyped, yes. But still a decent ride and not as terrible as some people like to make out.
This may be a sweeping generalisation but people hype up what they ride or what they would like to, and slag off everything else for some reason! God knows why.Ride it like you stole it!0 -

I just don't like the suspension pivot. Plus white aint a great colour. Each to their own though.0

So that's 4 years on the bounce that it's won MBR Trailbike of the year? Someone has probably mentioned that already, but cannot be arsed to scour the whole thread. Seem to be the heaviest bikes in every test, and far from the best spec on show...but am guessing the whole must equate to more than the sum of the parts!
There is something quite nice about them, in a pig ugly way. They look solid and reliable enough...but would people make such noise if they were say, French?
when making my decision, I went for something that not only flies down hill, but isn't going to kill me dragging it to the top of the hill too...0 -

Too little weight is a bad thing, and I have a feeling that things were being pushed too far.0 -
5's are sh*t. real men do it on a GT.

What yeehaa said. Weight isn't all that bad, better in some places than others obviously, but some bikes nowadays are too light, the five is weighty yes, but with a well thought out build you could have a feasable 25-26lb build, which IMO is pretty much as light as 140/150mm bikes should go, any lower and you may as well be on a shorter travel bike0
-
Unless your insurance or someone else is paying too pricey and too hype'y
marin, dale, trek and others have won trail bike awards with similar bikes
you can probably get a foes or a MC for the money if you shop about
but if you want to fit in - baaaa baaaa baaaa0 -
I was actually quite surprised how light they are. Didnt feel any heavier than my remedy, or my mates enduro.
Personally Im not keen on the look, but I do respect them for being very good bikes...and British built, and I'd say that given the write colour scheme, they actually do look quite tasty.
The orange alpine 160 on the other hand is just plain ugly0 -

I do think that Orange make good bikes but I thought that they were a sponsor for MBR so the accolade may be a bit subjective.0 -
Am I one of the few who thinks they actually look pretty good? No idea how they ride properly, based on my test all I can tell you is they go over speed bumps well!Rock Lobster 853, Trek 1200 and a very old, tired and loved Apollo Javelin.0

They ride well apparently, that's what really matters, one man's meat is often another's poison, I like my Stumpy and don't even mind the low slung pedals, some people hate it and slag it off, I can afford to sell it and change it if I want (so it's not about sticking up for something after I already backed this horse) but I don't need to, its suits me fine and my riding style.
The reason people slag anything off usually is because they are cynical,(Man Utd, Orange 5's etc..etc..) if you delve deep into the reasons why they see no good in anything else, it is usually nothing to do with whatever the subject matter is they happen to be sounding off about and everything to do with the fact that their intended target is simply a channel to vent their own frustrations of life, too many bills to pay, perhaps not happy with their lot, feel life owes them more than what they achieved..etc...etc.
As for too many thread on forums on this subject, (which has been a common complaint on STW in particular) you can see the subject matter in most titles so there's no excuse, just skip past the thread you are tired of looking at.
Finally, I like the idea of pretty young ladies such as the girls in this thread riding such ugly bikes, give it a 'beauty & the beast' type quality and makes my lycra bugle expand even further just thinking about it.
Good day all. 8)0 -
Orange have never made a good bike.....
....except my 1991 Orange Clockwork, which I love to pieces.

Yup. Including the legendary "We fitted different tyres to the Trek, and they weren't very good, so we've taken a point off" one year, and "Orange Five- the brakes don't work at all, it's very expensive, and the wheels are far too skinny and completely inappropriate. 10/10!"Uncompromising extremist0 -
I thought it was a 5/5 score. Is that not where the name came from?0

We've just been through a few years of bikes getting lighter and lighter and lighter for the same intended use, and suffered more breakages than I can ever recall in a similar range.
