Its the queen stage and things are already underway. Five hideous climbs to be faced with total climbing of about 6000 metres. They've already finished the first climb and there is a group of 18 out in front according to the cyclingnews live report with a gap to the peloton of 3.30. Nieve is the best placed overall at 9.08 but there are other strong climbers in this group such as Sastre, Garzelli, Sella, Tschopp. Also got Di Luca in there as well although he hasnt shown much climbing in this race. A long way to go yet.

Hmm interesting names in the breakaway.

Cant believe I have to leave shortly though and miss this stage. Hoping I can find extended coverage later.

Nieve is now virtual leader of the race. A good move for Euskatel, as Anton can sit quiet.

Several riders quit, including Hunter, Downing, Ferrari and Kristoff.

What's Hunter still doing there anyway, unless he's hoping for another chance of a punch-up?

He tweeted that he wanted a couple of days 'training' in the mountains before quitting.

The climbers just got an Italian flag out....

Just over 100km to ride. Wearing your jumper over your shoulders is such a Euro thing...

Is it my bad eyes, or does Hoogerland have a tiny front ring on?

This is more my cup of tea; a traditional Dolomite stage.
Looking forward to the graveyard of cyclists next.
The Fedaia/Marmolada: one of my favourite climbs.
Very hard, but also stunning, in parts.

Garzelli and Nieve after Hoogie for the Cima.

J-Rod and Arroyo attack... will anyone react?

The bunch already very small and fractured.
Half way up the Marmolada it's going to be every man for himself, time.
    This is more like it.

Futile effort for Arroyo and Rodriguez, but the Saxo response is stringing out the bunch nicely.

I don't think any of these have the stones to attack one after the other to really test Bert, after all it might not come off.... sigh, modern GT racing.

He looked a bit panicky when he bombed past Arroyo a bit earlier. Hopefully no-one helps him.

Pink jersey group is the only one left on the road.
Anton helping Bertie. Now, there's a surprise.
Rain please, as the Fedaia descent is fairly straightforward.
