As a complete newbie (hence posting up in this section) I was considering a carbon framed bike as my next bike, however after reading that I am now somewhat reluctant to invest any money into it.
Can anyone say if a carbon framed bike can honestly just melt on a hot day or in the back of a car etc?
Oh, and what makes me doubt this is that carbon fibre is often used for high temp stuff, but also know thought they used high temp epoxy (or whatever it is) for making those? I dunno?
Jesus.
Dont ya just love a know it all
I'm in the market for a new camera, I'm going to post on a camera forum asking if cameras explode if held upside down.0 -

Open to options, but I think its going to be from a lbs as I would prefer to make sure it fits me properly and that way I get to ride it for a couple of miles prior to buying. Max spend would be around £1500 so fairly bottom end for a carbon, might get another specialized as I seem to get on quite well with my bottom end cheapy one, which will also make a nice winter bike, it was only a £400 Secteur but its done me very proud. Maybe an Allez as I am assuming they do a carbon version, but not done any price hunting yet. If I could get something nearer to £1000 that would be even better
I guess another "What bike" post will be due soon, lol :oops:0 -

Do they, blimey, you really do know everything. I am sooo glad you were born with all this wisdom and knowledge, you must be absolutely amazing. Things must be so easy when you dont ever have to ask any one anything because you already know it, I am so impressed with so many people on here  :roll:0 -
It's the rain you want to worry about, carbon fibre goes soft when it is exposed to water for more than an hour. That's why planes fly above the clouds and the pro's go back to their team car for a 531 framed bike when it rains.0

Its actually the frost you really need to worry about as if you have a minor blemish in it the water will get in, freeze, expand and crack ya frame open, seen loads of posts about that one too :roll:0 -

Some questions you just don't really need to ask though. Are bricks heavy? Can I breathe through my big toe? Where is the best place to punch a polar bear?0 -

You mean like, will carbon melt or distort in the heat if you honestly dont know the answer? So at last you see why someone would ask the question, It may be all very well for you being all high and mighty about it, but I am guessing I was not the only person on the forum not to know for 100% the correct answer, and for me personally in life, if I don't know or I have any doubt on something, then I ask people who will know, these I class as knowledgeable people, unfortunately, some knowledgeable people take it upon themselves to forget that they never knew the answer to something at some point in their life and since that point, they just assume that everyone else knows. I am not sure wether this is just an attempt for them to feel better by belittling people or wether the more knowledge you gain, the more arrogant you get? :roll:0 -
Do polar bears poo in the woods? Do they eat yellow snow?0

"whether". Hope this helps.0

It's worth considering that some "stupid questions" only seem stupid to those who don't know enough to realise everything is not so cut and dried as they might assume.0 -
The initial question seemed rather stupid and niaive. If there was a problem with carbon and temperature or water or whatever then bikes would NOT be made out of carbon.
However there are loads of "facts" stated by various people about carbon which probably do shroud it in some sort of mystery.
For instance:
Don't clamp if in a workshop clamp because you could crush the tube.
or.
Don't use it in a turbo trainer as the lateral load is too much.
I've asked various more experienced cycling friends about this and still don't have a real understanding.
I do do clamp my carbon bike in a workstand - carefully.
I store my carbon bike in a turbo trainer but haven't (yet) used it in the TT.0 -

Any question may appear stupid or niaive to someone that already knows the answer and assumes everyone else knows it to, the issue is of course one of assumptions.... For example, a mate of mine does use a carbon bike in a turbo trainer, and would probably find it a silly question to say can you use it in one. I personally have no idea if he should or shouldn't be, it's not my bike so I don't need to know.0 -

You have to understand that some people on the internet genuinely do know everything and people like yourself, coming onto the forum and posting questions about things they'd like to know the answer to, can distract them from their important business of posting really great stuff on other threads. So obviously they get a bit upset. I think you should be a bit more understanding towards P_Tucker in future.oscar-j wrote:so where do polar bears sh!t?
