Being the sad barstard that I am, I actually wrote the BBC to complain about their reporting, misinformation and poor use of terminology lol.0

My guess is that the sitution will steadily improve as the natural decay rate decreases, and any further contaminent release will be limited. It will take another major incident for any large scale release of radionuclides.
However it is very likely the some fuel rods have melted and are damaged - Cs137 and I131 have been detected at higher levels around the plant and some offsite places indicating that the casings have split/melted and fission products have got into the vented steam. Levels appear low though.
The reactors are history though - the seawater will have damaged the containment vessels, and any melted fuel will have to be contained. And the future of nuclear energy will take a big hit.0 -
