As silver linings go, that's pretty tenuous.
Well done.
lol cheer up, think of it as a japanese version of rapture :roll:0 -
The Japanese 2012 Windsurfing Squad look keen. They've just arrived in DoverVis Unita Fortior0

THEN, I read the first two lines of your link
Plus there's the fact that tsunamis aren't tidal waves
Horrific scenes though, I'm sure I saw a mention of 88,000 people missing

I don't believe in any religious stuff, but I'm curious to know the relevance of that passage0 -
Montevideoguy wrote:getonyourbike wrote:the problem with the nuclear reactor could get messy. If you don't know, I'll explain. Water wasn't going through a cooling system in a nuclear power station on a reactor. They tried to to use the emergency off switch, but it didn't work. So its overheating and they can't stop it, not good.
It really is amazing the sheer power of the earthquake and tsunami. I'm glad the death toll is so low though.
Death toll so far estimated at 1,000. Probably going to be much higher.
Its testament (and in no way belittling what has happened, which is absolutely horrific) to the amount of earthquake training and the forthought that goes into some building in Japan that the estimated death toll is "only" at 1000, I would not have been surprised, given the population of Japan if it had been 20 times that number. Take the quake in Haiti, that was a magnitude 7, each whole point in the scale is roughly 32 times the amount of energy, so a jump of 2 on the scale is over a thousand times more powerful an earthquake!0 -

I though for every number it was 10X more powerful. So if a quake was 1 on the Richter scale, then the 8.9 hit Japan is 100,000,000 more powerful. Basically, insanely powerful.0

Loss of cooling, reactor rods melting, containment building roof blown off... god this doesn't sound like Japan 2011, it sounds eerily like Ukraine 19860

it's 31.6 times the magnitude per whole number, each .2 on the scale is a doubling of the power0 -

Yeah, yerself and Yeehaa read that different to how it was meant. I sometimes forget that the internet is a tool for selling stuff, not communicating blank irony. I certainly wasn't being sincere.
Now I'm being sincere: Poor crazy Japanese bastards + can we get some international rules about building reactors near to faultlines?0 -

Quite a bit different as there was no containment building at the Ukraine site, so hopefully the Japanese situation while at first looks bad might turn out ok - as far as nuclear disasters go :shock:I'm going to blow the bank on a new build ( within reason ) NOW DONE!!

I've got nuclear power station underpants. When they're too loose....chernobyl fallout. The dissenter is every human being at those moments of his life when he resigns

Did I hear today that they're predicting another earthquake soon? around 7 on the richter scale..
If so, even more bad times are ahead
Kept hearing about the 1000's of bodies washing up on the shore and that the Japanese don't have enough body bags0 -
BBC News tonight went from pumping sea water into the reactor to cool it down to bodies washing up on the beach. An unfortunate link I think.
On an ironic note, whilst sat in the cafe at work watching the scenes of devastion in Japan a colleagues mobile went off. The ringtone? OMD Enola Gay!This is a block of text that can be added to posts you make. There is a 255 character limit.0 -
This is starting to hit the UK too... 3 of our potentail customers withdrew from proceedings for a few weeks as they're not sure if they still have factories :shock:0

One thing with nuclear power stations is they always play it down at first - no chance of leaks, meltdowns etc. Rarely true.
By now though however, if the SCRAM safety system has worked and stopped fission, the residual heat from the decay products will have lowered substantially, reducing the risk of meltdown as time goes by. Flood it with seawater though and it is goodbye to the reactor, then they have to move quick before the thing corrodes. The danger is the fuel rods melting, mixing with water then exploding, blowing the reactor vessel to pieces.0 -

Let's not get mixed up with power and energy though ;-)
Each step up in magnitude on the MMS scale is an increase of 10^1.5 or 31.62. Two steps up is 1000x the energy release.
This doesn't however mean it will feel 1000 times stronger.0 -
Meltdown not also that bad either according to the experts on TV today. The core will melt and fall into the containment unit below. It will then of course cost billions to clear the site and decommission the facility if that happens. You only need two tools: WD40 and Duck Tape.
If it doesn't move and should, use the WD40.
If it shouldn't move and does, use the tape.0 -
