Family holiday, so sans bike. Due to a stroke of luck, I will be down that way on two wheels this weekend, so I can make amends.

Ah you should be pretty safe then. Expensive machines though! You can get much tastier espressos with a Gaggia and an MC2 but appreciate the counter space issue.

As well as the wife aggravation issues! ;)

Just got the new machine. Am now as high as a kite on coffee! The coffee it produces is head and shoulders above the nespresso and also most coffee purchased whilst out and about (not just from the chains either) and the macchiato is just flipping awesome! It certainly doesn't fall down with the milk either.

Glad to hear it! You went for a Jura in the end I take it?

Quick poll, would you guys visit a decent coffee shop in Kingston/Surbiton? The area is a bit lacking currently and a friend and I are considering it.

Yep, went a bit mad and got the new Z6 as a post bonus, accident recovery treat.

Wandered round Kingston today and could only see Coffee Hero in the town centre in a sea of chain shops. Didn't have a coffee as I was just about to purchase the machine and thought I might drink a bit of coffee testing it out. I don't know about Surbiton I am afraid but there is a decent one in New Malden (The Place I think) with decent coffee and Korean and European cakes!

I did think of opening a cycle shop/cafe in Raynes Park but we are inundated with cafe/restaurants (three, all of limited quality) that mean its just a bit too crowded.

Surbiton definitely not lacking in coffee shops... I think the new one at Ditton Marina next to Surbiton Cycles is a missed opportunity in a great location so keep an eye on them and you might pick up a bargain

The new machine is working out very nicely but we are getting through beans at a rate of knots. Can anyone suggest some good value 1kg bags of beans ideally for less than £20 inc postage?

A friend of mine has recently opened a place opposite Hampton Wick station and I finally remembered to turn right after Kingston Bridge this morning and give it a go. Good shot of proper espresso certainly woke me up for the ride in. Problem is he wouldn't take any money off me so I feel a bit guilty and slightly reluctant to go back. The croissants on the counter looked really tempting, but I resisted for the same reasons.
Regarding coffee shops in Kingston the problem is there are so many of the chain ones and most people are sheep. There is a really great Italian restaurant that does really good pizzas next door to the Pizza Express, it's often empty when the Pizza Express is packed as most people go for a name they recognise rather than take a chance.

Kingston also has a decent coffee shop in the Apple Market, between the bakers and the larger café, not sure what it's called though

I'll look out for that one in New Malden!
  • If you're after fresh beans to grind, IMO the best are from IKEA - believe it or not. I've tried every bean out there over the years & thought the wife was being a tight-arse when she got them. As ever she was right and they're superb...

Good points! What is your friend's place called? I'll check it out. I'll be sure to tell him you sent me and assured me there would be no charge

It would certainly need to present people with a good reason to try it out over a reliable chain.

Not sure what it's called, something Italian as I recall. It's pretty much directly across the road from the station at the far left of the little parade of shops.
Are you back from Turkey then?
  • Big mention for www.silveroakcoffee.co.uk

Stumbled across them in Cambridge market a couple of weeks ago and bought a bag on the off chance.

Single origin: Smallholders of Inza Cauca, Colombia - lovely stuff. Just ordered a rather large consignment of it online.

Yes seconded, I bought a bag of coffee from them a few months ago and it was indeed very good.

I've moved into a one bed flat and have come to the conclusion that a Gaggia classic is too damn noisy for making a cup of coffee early on a Sunday morning.
It's also a PITA trying to do espresso and french press from a single grinder; the machine may have to go. :|

Might have to cave for a bean to cup at some point in the future.

    A Jura Z6?

Now that's what I call silly commuter coffee!
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

I'm pretty sure I'm selling my Gaggia Classic and reverting to having a good grinder and 4 or 5 other methods for coffee and getting a new stove top is a great shout.

    Yep back now!

And we went ahead and opened a little takeaway coffee place in Surbiton. It's just a small popup space for now, we'll see how it goes. Come check it out if you get a chance, we're serving Square Mile coffee at the moment. It's at 11 Berrylands Road.

Popped in on Thursday, had a lovely flat white. Probably the best coffee I've ever had in Kingston or Surbiton.

Nice to meet you Pangolin, hope it takes off and spawns more in the area.

Anyone recommend a good bean for cafetiere, preferably something fresh and lightly roasted? Oh and easy to acquire.

Suspect the answer is Monmouth.. but would prefer easier to get.

Sounds daft, but Ikea beans are pretty damned good, and cheap, easy to find
