20g is a big dose, not unheard of but if you’re having to use that much just to get a good extraction then something else is up.
14g (+/- 0.5g) is a standard dose for a double although that's probably with darker Italian style roasts in mind (given the Italians set the standard). 18g-20g seems popular these days, probably because lighter roasts are fashionable (e.g. HasBean). 12g is pretty stingey by any standards!
Around 16g seems to be the sweet spot with my setup for most beans (usually medium roast).0 -
i could be using the wrong basket though which may change what happens. will try the other basket tonightBMC TM01 - FCN 0

why is it that i'm unable to get that nice ever so slightly frothy top on my drip filter coffee?

talk to me about grinders.
would love one with a doser on it, but they seem to be stupidly expensive... anyone got any suggestions?BMC TM01 - FCN 0

Happy with my Rancilio Rocky (doserless). It's a bit 'clumpy' and the stepped adjustment is largely pointless but it's relatively small and gets the job done.

Buying again I'd be looking at options like the Eureka Mignon, Iberital MC2 or Ascaso I-mini as I don't see the point in having a stepped grinder anymore.0 -

Point? welcome to the world of niche coffee
My Classic (second hand) cost me a bit under £70, the grinder over £200 and as temporary measure I'm currently using the grinder with a £5 Vietnamese dripper!
The MC2 is probably the cheapest out there for espresso. I kind of wish I'd gone with this but at the time wanted a stepped machine. http://www.happydonkey.co.uk/hd0866-iberital-mc2-auto.html0 -

i have kept my nespresso on the kitchen side as well, 50 seconds for an espresso first thing in the morning is indispensable.BMC TM01 - FCN 0

I'd say the MC2 is a good shout and is no more expensive than a very average wheelset. If you do use it for years to come its well worth it, else its just an expensive paper weight.
It's a hard pill to swallow but looking back, worth every penny.0 -
What did you get in the end Spasypaddy? I'm using a Gaggia Classic with an MC2 (the doserless one) with great results. I use 18g ground coffee for what it's worth. For most coffee it should take about 25-30 seconds from when you press the brew switch (and water hits the coffee) until you hit stop. If you aim for about a 2:1 ratio (18g ground coffee in, 36g liquid out) that's a good starting place.- Genesis Croix de Fer

Going to replace our nespresso with a bean to cup (I know that a proper machine and grinder would be best but we have neither the space or the patience for that) and we have been recommended a Jura machine. Any thoughts on the best bean to cups out there?RIP commute...

My parents have had a Jura bean to cup for years, seems pretty decent. I can't get good milk from it though.
I hear the breville is meant to be pretty good but not tried it myself. It's not a proper bean to cup though, it's sort of half way there http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sage-Heston-Blumenthal-Barista-Express/dp/B00CI32S9I/ref=pd_bxgy_79_img_y- Genesis Croix de Fer

If you have a little 3.6v electric screwdriver then it'll probably fit onto the place the handle.
This sits next to my Rhino hand grinder
Ends up grinding about 4x quicker than I would, and is still weak enough that it'll not tear the thing apart if it hits a lump.
Naturally you'll have to hide it if anyone visits, to maintain the air of an authentic coffee connoisseur0 -
nah i want arms!!!!
annoyingly ive just about run out of preground and was going to get some beans. but still no sign of the grinder!BMC TM01 - FCN 0

The Juras have improved with milk apparently but its good to hear the coffee comes out well. I tend to drink either espresso or heathen americanos with cold milk!RIP commute...

Ah you should be pretty safe then. Expensive machines though! You can get much tastier espressos with a Gaggia and an MC2 but appreciate the counter space issue.- Genesis Croix de Fer

Yes (although I was wrong before), if the weight is the same and it's blocked, then too fine. Make it more coarse and take it from there. You should be able to easily adjust the grinder..0

Paid another visit to the excellent Broom Wagon - http://cafebroomwagon.com - in Seaton, last week. And then a short drive up the road to The Coffee Factory to get some more of their Black Bear Espresso (in bean form, obviously). Yum.1985 Mercian King of Mercia - work in progress (Hah!
