Am toying with tri vs cycling club - as i have committed to a tri event for charity in the summer. Thoughts on Twickenham CC and Thames Turbo?

Tri clubs tend to be expensive unless you take advantage of all their swimming sessions! For the cycling club you really need to go and along and see what they're like, and what day you're free to ride, Twickenham ride on saturday mornings I believe, go along and try them out!

There's plenty of choice here in south east london. Or indeed South West London where I actually know about and is relevant to where you are actually are. In fact I've no idea what choice of cycle clubs there are in south east, there could be none for all I know I was just getting my east and west muddled in some way...

Lord love a duck, guv'na! This is why you don't take any Anneka Rice from anyone darn from seven. You and your trouble and strife have become far too reliant on Garmins - Open your mince pies and have a butchers at a map of the smoke. Nowhere near the Bow Bells fella! 8)

I believe it's something called "Baby Brain" although of course she did point out my cock up - which as you can now see I'd already edited...

+1. If it's between the two, Twickenham CC. They're a good, friendly club IME.

To JibberJim - [Just keep training! Have you considered joining a club?]

Thanks for the advice. Am toying with tri vs cycling club - as i have committed to a tri event for charity in the summer. Thoughts on Twickenham CC and Thames Turbo?
Imo, your cycling will come on better and stronger and faster with a cycling club than with a tri club (though there's nothing stopping you from joining both). Plus most cycling clubs are only £20-40 to join for the year and if you want to try your hand at road racing you'll have teammates and old-timers to help you out and give you tips. It's a world away from triathlon where the emphasis is more about riding fast in TTs rather than overall bike handling and pack riding skills (though obviously cycing clubs are quite involved in TTs too!)

Even though I was a member of a tri club in Holland -- where the cycling training sessions were a lot more like cycle club training rides, in that it was all tight bunch riding, handicaps, and near road-racing -- I decided as a triathlete here in the UK I was better off joining separate running and cycling clubs, and swimming on my own. Ymmv of course!

Beautiful day for riding and almost perfect conditions, although if you were looking for excuses you could say it was a little too much of a tailwind going up Broomfield... (Made the stretch across the top from Kingston to Robin Hood gates pretty slow.

Lots of hold ups, but nothing new there, so couldn't ask for a better day for this time of year.

Lots of bikes out today - good to see!

    Aiming for 56:00 this year.

Yes, lovely afternoon out there. With the journey there and back this is the longest ride i have done in about three months i think so didnt go all out. Was very busy out there so it wasnt going to be a fast time anyway. Aiming to take 10 minutes off that time

Nice day but hit loads of traffic. Pleased cos I set out treating it as a recovery ride from a 23.8m / 2,600ft trail run yesterday.

Nike once did a 10k run around Richmond Park where I think the park was closed to traffic. Just wondering if a local CC had thought about seeing if it would be possible to get the park for a morning to do a 'charity 3 lap challenge'?
  • London Dynamo do organise time trials in the park. It's a 10.4 mile course rather than 3 laps, but still a good event that gets some very fast entrants, and it has a road category separate to the TT bike category, so you don't need specialist equipment to compete. This year's events are on 26th June, 24th July and 7th August.

The LD TTs are the best you're going to do as running races and the London Duathlon (the other major event that manages to get park roads closed) either have so many entrants or charge so much money per entrant that they can afford to pay the huge fee to have it closed.

The LD TTs being much smaller non-profit grassroots events have to run before 7am (last person off at that time, so finishing before ~7:30) and it's clear that even though the park gates aren't open to cars yet, cyclists must watch for other park users (and deer) and yield to them where traffic rules dictate. That said, they are great events and I highly recommend entering one. There is a limit of 120 people per event I believe.

Great , the first one of those is the weekend before the Marmotte so if I'm going to have any kind of form this year it should be then. Any details re applying for a place yet?

They're going to be on a first come first served basis this year. Keep an eye on the CTT and London Dynamo websites. I'd post the forms here, but can't see any way to attach files to posts.

Cheers Roland - it's a minute and a half quicker than this time last year, so I'm optimistic of improving on last year's time. (Not that I'll be anywhere near the top 5 again...)

Definitely nearly time for the RPCC curtain raiser. Be good to see you out again.

Had a crack today and was 5 minutes down on last summer but gives me a target for the year in RP.

Positives: truly glorious winter's day, what could be possibly more fun in the sunshine?, some cheery riders in the Park in the middle of the working day acknowledging one another, I was using my paternity leave for what it was surely intended.

Negatives: first time I haven't broken the hour for a while, knackered after limited sleep for the last week (see positives), wheel needs some tinkering to run true and maybe slowed me down.

Yep, could be time to invest in a copy of "The Time Starved Cyclist"? Finding training time is definitely tougher, as is justifying that latest pair of shoes / wheels, new helmet etc. etc.

I have craftily lined up number 2 for a month after the Marmotte so should be OKish over spring / summer.

Strokemonkey, I was in your position a couple of years ago and can definitely recommend a club - you will come on in leaps and bounds. Partly because it's more difficult to cancel a ride if there are others involved, partly because you'll be drawing on a wealth of hard-earned experience, and partly because it's simply more fun with other riders. I settled on TCC because they were very welcoming, didn't turn their noses up at my relative lack of experience, and were local. The only reason I didn't try Kingston Wheelers was that they are a little out of my way but they also have a good reputation for welcoming new riders. Have a look at http://www.twickenhamcc.co.uk/ or send me a PM if you fancy coming on a TCC ride.

Planning my first RP3-lap tomorrow morning...

  • Conditions:
Nice day for beginning of February but bit windy (guess which direction…)

    Excuses (selected):
Winter wheels (Aksiums) on, heavy tyres, legs heavy from 3.5 hours Weds, started winter training late, only base miles done in January, guts not fully sorted after last week’s food poisoning, baby awake 3.30 am this morning, oldest daughter shouting wake up daddy wake up at 6.30 am, baby awake 5 am previous morning, ongoing (lack of) work stress, wearing long sleeve non-aero jersey and leg warmers, police at Ham gate, learner drivers and deer watchers.

Time – three consistent laps each just under 18 mins. Last year did 50 mins at end March - bit of work to do over next 6-7 weeks...

Figured I'd give this a go as I felt pretty good and it was so mild out today, for once I didn't have all those restrictive warm layers on. It was crazy windy though, insanely fast from Kingston to Roehampton, then insanely slow up to Richmond. Made for an interesting ride! Pretty steady ~23 min laps.

Excuses: I'm over a stone now more than my regular weight due to being 5 months pregnant but have kept riding regularly (I hesitate to use the word "training" to describe it), can barely go an hour without having a pee stop, can't get very aero, have lost about 15% of my FTP watts, and get the daylights kicked out of me by my future child if I push my effort much over threshold for much more than a few minutes. But still really enjoying cycling and will keep it up as long as I can. Hopefully can bounce back enough after June to make another go at this in late summer/early autumn.

    chapeau...

I remember wandering around Amsterdam and seeing an very pregnant woman riding a bike with a kid on the front AND the back of her bike.

    Don't think she'd have managed sub-60 though...
  • Conditions:
very nice for Feb. Ideal day for getting out race wheels, tyres and shoes for pre-season check

    Excuses:
fewer than last week, probably ~15 secs of misc traffic delays in total. Maybe the 8 secs/mile improvement will convince my twitter sceptics about the validity of some of last weeks excuses...

First go for almost a year. Lots of room for improvement!

Glad to see all the gravel has gone.
