In no order,
Matt Bellamy
Bernard Butler
Jimmys Hendrix & Page
John Squire.
Johnnys Marr & Greenwood
Peter Green
Mark Knopfler
Hendrix moved the goalposts tho.0 -
so this thread unsurprisingly has turned into who is *your* favourite guitarist loosely associated to rock...
from now on ONE guitarist only and WHY
Randy Rhoads - combination of ridiculous technical talent, and saved the career of one Mr Osbourne, and did exactly what Ronnie James Dio predicted in the opening bars of Heaven and Hell.0 -

If being pushed to one guitarist it'd have to be Zakk Wylde. Took over from Rhoades, able to play a variety of styles to a high standard and instantly recognisable by his sound.I ride a bike. Doesn't make me green or a tree hugger. I drive a car too.0
-
If I could only pick one, I would have to go for Silas.

Has to be Hendrix.
He tore up the rule book. He had an effortless style & could also write a great tune. He wasn't a guitarist in a band who struts about unleashing widdly solo's at regular intervals. He was THE band.
There was a documentary on TV some years ago about guitarists. Clapton & Beck were interviewed & they both said they couldn't believe what they were seeing & hearing. Crank Voodoo Chile upto 11 & tell me I'm wrong?0 -
I tried to pick one.... I honestly did!
In no real order....
Randy Rhoads (joint fave)
Zakk Wylde (joint fave)
Eric Clapton
Ritchie Blackmoore
Jeff Waters (love his bizzarre pace changes)
Jimmy Page
Angus young
and yes... I love all those posey 80's widdly solos! go Vai! :twisted:0 -
philthy3 wrote:Angus Young! Surely you can't be serious? Even Steve Jones of the Pistols is better than him. I see no one has mentioned the likes of Glen Tipton, Michael Schenker, Ronnie Montrose, Gary Moore or Rory Gallagher.
EVH just brought a few tricks to the big stage. A very good rhythm guitarist but not so hot as a soloist. Others have adapted those tricks and do them better; Vinnie Vincent, Satriani, Vai etc.
Angus Young rocks. Sure, he doesn't push boundaries and sticks to fairly standard blues licks but his riffs and solos perfectly match the song he plays. I think there is a very strong bluesman in there.
He has far more feeling than some sweep picking arpeggio reproducing clinical 'technical' guitarist.0 -
Andrew Ridgeley0

[/quote I have just remembered a glaring omission by everyone........
BRIAN MAY.

+1 Brian May is the man. Everyone remembers the Buckingham Palace bit but so versatile- and a unique sound

Angus Young.. you must be joking????? :shock:Why tidy the house when you can clean your bike?0
-
Because you like AC/DC's music it doesn't make Angus Young a great guitarist. He certainly isn't one. Many guitarists with distinct sounds have based their styles on the blues scales and modes. Ace Frehley; utterly crap but instantly recognisable. I also don't like guitarists who can speed sweep arpegios such as Malmsteen and that geezer Doug Marks. Very very fast but so souless.I ride a bike. Doesn't make me green or a tree hugger. I drive a car too.0

There can be only one! Sounds like a quote from Highlander! So be it then - FZ gets my vote. Both virtuoso and composer, not as accessible as most but, and this sounds cliché I know, always pushing the boundaries of "rock". Never one to play it safe. Gotta admire him for that.

Off topic slightly, but shows Squires is a bit of an inspiration.

Tom Morello's pretty good. John Frusciante too.
Not the best of all time though.
Matt Bellamy, better than credited for. But not the best.
I'd go for one of
Page, Knopfler, Slash or May. All for the very distinctive sound they get out of their respective instruments rather than virtuosity. Though they're all virtuoso's
Actually there's absolutely s*** loads. Good thread. Not specific enough though.
I'm starting a new one.0 -

Fair play.
Like them or loathe them, that's a hell of a sound he gets with his delay pedal.0 -
Slash and May both remind be if guitarists who are right on the edge of their powers.
On Appetite for Destruction I always got the impression that Slash was trying to catch him self up a bit. More so live.
Queen were my first favourite band, but May isn't hot. Look at him live. He's not a natural, again always hanging on when he plays. THe look of concentration he has when playing tunes he's been gigging for 30 years is daft.0 -

Double bass actually.
Although, I have a few guitars in my, ahem, study.0 -

2. Richard Thompson, although he would deny being a rock & roll player
3. Buddy Guy
4. Robert Johnson
5. Albert King
See above. Great guitar players but not ROCK!
Depends on your definitions I suppose. There would be no rock without the music these three played. The Stones and Led Zep in particular simply stole from them.0 -

Frank Zappa was a great guitarist but I was always put off by the fact he looked like a kiddie fiddler....0 -

Like the unfunny Bailey, I can play my guitar through my Boss multi effects unit and do a very bad and equally unfunny impersonation of almost all guitarists so far mentioned.
Not sure what it would prove though.0 -
Slim 'Hamster' - better than average.Over the hill & pickin' up speed.0

Johnny Greenwood.
End of.0 -
Actually, I've just remembered Lindsey Buckingham. His acoustic playing on Big love and Never going down is for me very talented and worthy of mention. It would still have to be Zakk Wylde as the all time greatest for me though.I ride a bike. Doesn't make me green or a tree hugger. I drive a car too.0

J Mascis for me everytime. Genius. Greatest Guitarist that ever lived!
