But can he make a seagull sound like a Les Paul ?

Well, the seagull would stay in tune for longer, that's for sure. Haha!

Wrong spelling and not a "rock" guitarist !

Yeah yeah I did acknowledge he wasn't a 'rock' guitairst - Still a mint fingerpicker though!

I apologise for my poor spelling.

    My actual vote though...

Technical ability - Satriani - Best instrumental guitaist and makes the guitar sound like it is actually feeling emotion. Summer song is on my mp3 for 'sprint finish friday' home from work.

Pioneer, Innovator and showman - Jimmy Hendrix

    Pure rock filth - Slash

Angus Young! Surely you can't be serious? Even Steve Jones of the Pistols is better than him. I see no one has mentioned the likes of Glen Tipton, Michael Schenker, Ronnie Montrose, Gary Moore or Rory Gallagher.

EVH just brought a few tricks to the big stage. A very good rhythm guitarist but not so hot as a soloist. Others have adapted those tricks and do them better; Vinnie Vincent, Satriani, Vai etc.

    Are you human???

I agree with schenker, Montrose and Gallagher. Moore is too anodyne for me. Glenn Tipton...?? and as for EVH being *just* a rhythm player!
Angus Young might not be technically gifted, but few can play with such a strong bend vibrato. Steve Jones is less talented than I am.

And what is Django doing ins thread abou ROCK guiatrists?? Likewise Buddy Guy and Ry Cooder (two of my all time faves also)

Eddie Van Halen at his best is truely the most inventive, musical and iconic guitarist of all time.
Most just followed. Before the band were signed he often played with his back to the audience to keep his techniques form being copied. 8)

I did have Michael Schenker, Ronnie Montrose and Gary Moore in my own top 5.
I have just remembered a glaring omission by everyone........
    BRIAN MAY.

    Others to consider
    Alex Lifeson - Rush
'Fast' Eddie Clark - Motorhead (original lineup)
    Todd Rundgren - Meatloaf
    Billy Gibbons - ZZ Top
Always be yourself, unless you can be Aaron Rodgers....Then always be Aaron Rodgers.

I'm not sure that's an oversight - more likely a general feeling that he isn't one of the best.

I'm surprised that Hendrix isn't held in such high esteem on this thread. For me he's miles ahead of everyone else. After him, it would just be a question of who's your favourite guitarist.
I certainly wouldn't put Clapton above him, and neither would Clapton.

If anyone gets a chance to see Chantel McGregor do it, she's one of the best guitarists I've ever seen, very gifted.

EVH wasn't the first guitarist to perform tapping and right handed hammer-ons, he just introduced it into a lot of his materiel. He's a very innovative guitarist but isn't in the same class as some of the names that have been mentioned.

    +1,
also consider Joe Satriani, Tony T.S. McPhee (Groundhogs) and Rory Gallagher (Taste)

    2. Richard Thompson, although he would deny being a rock & roll player
    3. Buddy Guy

Jeff Healey. Blind and plays the guitar differently and a lot better than many top players.

Mick ROnson was very under rated at the time. SIngle note solos were his speciality ala Moonage Daydream.

I like Pete Townshend - no idea if he's any good technically as I don't play. Hendrix obviously fantastic.

it's a hard life if you don't weaken.
