Why did the Merlin thread get locked?

I think it would be worth the OP re-posting the pics of the broken frame, and a summary of the hassles you've had (minus individual employee names) so that future Merlin customers who haven't read the original and deleted thread can see what kind of company and 'warranty' they may be dealing with.

(Just out of interest, I've got a Cannondale with a lifetime warranty on the frame for the original owner. Has anyone out there ever had to claim on it and had any problems? I've heard that Specialized are really good at replacing frames on their warranty. I don't want to hijack the thread, it's just that info on other companies willingness to repair/replace frames would be useful to show just how poor Merlin have been in this case.)

I had one of them red bikes but I don't any more. Sad face.

I pointed out I have been trying to get a work address for the American Bike Group in the UK so I can make a small claims.

I also pointed out I have not been harassing anyone and, at all times, I have tried to be polite and fair.

They've gone to discuss the matter with the policeman that asked them to visit me.

It's not very nice having the police turn up at night, Mrs P wasn't happy at all.
Jeezus christ you don't need that $hit. Absolutely ridiculous! Nothing else better to do I'm sure ....

So why the fu$k don't they do it then, instead of hassling innocent people in their own homes.

  • The OP should definately get some advice from Trading Standards or free legal advice.....

We should also start a Facebook group against ABG! or something similar.....

  • I had an Aluminium Cannondale mtb break at the seatpost joint once. I got a new frame within days and no police turned up at my door. Bought another Cannondale a few years later and would consider buying another one in future.

I love it when everyone gets so angry about things they know so little about.

I'm not knocking a fair claim, just all the faux anger and crusading. Legal advice is going to cost more than it is worth. And the harrassment is another issue altogether.

Unfortunately, if someone makes a complaint, they have to attend etc.

For the OP - you could've just said that it wasn't you that typed the stuff in question.
Someone must've hijacked your user account etc.
No way of proving that it was actually 'you' that was sitting in front of your PC at the material time

Not wishing to start a separate argument, but that kind of naive advice is less than helpful. There is also no way of proving that it wasn't him. Lying to the police rarely, if ever, makes things any better. Ultimately, can the OP prove that someone may have hacked his account? I doubt it?

To the OP, you need to speak with a solicitor ASAP if you haven't already. Sadly, having received a complaint, the police are just doing their job. Perhaps not the most important part like we expect them to do (ie catching murderers, thieves and rapists) but their job nonetheless.

    Utterly abysmal behaviour by ABG.

Nice post.... this is a forum mate which is bound to provoke judgements. A little less of your holier than thou attitude would be nice as well

    And actually, i did say free legal advice (Citizens Advice can be useful, plus most solicitors give 30m consultation for free). This would help is the OP puts in a Small Claims Court case (which is pretty cheap to do);

    You didn't read...

I have no issue with using the internet for advice and for raising problems. I do have issues with hysteria, half truths, misinformation, and reading the last post and thinking you know the lot.

I'm not sure how that makes me holy, but I'd rather have a discussion about frame damage and sense than blither and swearing.

Thank you for your input. Be a sheep.

To be fair you don't normally get a visit from the police after trying to get your push bike frame replaced under warranty :?

I have always wanted a Litespeed and was tempted by a Icon frame in the sale, I don't really have the money to spend and have now made up my mind not to touch them, what a shame as great looking bikes. As people may know I am a massive fan of British companies and am even more please that my last new bike came from Sunday bikes (now Sabbath), they have great customer service and great bikes and no I don't work for them (or Velosolo or Shutt VR)
Another potential sale lost in the future.
And Ti is not dead, carbon bikes are like computors, they look dated within a year or 2, Ti will always be cool :D

Not wishing to start an argument by replying...:)....but how can it be proved?
For example of similar..you receive an abusive text msg from a phone number you know...unless the owner of that phone admits to it, it's not going anywhere.
    Naive.....no. More work experience :)

Which is why the police do the warning after the first one. To stop it turning into 'harassment'...

    Hi Everyone

The arrival of two policmen on a Sunday evening is unpleasant. My wife was not pleased to say the least.

But we have to remember that this is just over a warranty claim.

The very nice policemen told me that nearly all of their harassment warnings were husband/wife bf/gf related and they were amazed it was an American warranty issue.

I may never get a replacement Merlin Cielo or even a repair to my own Merlin but, one thing is clear, the real loser will be, and always be, the American Bicycle Group.

Their behaviour and regard for their customers is lamentable and they should be ashamed.

The other side of my local pub lives a barrister and a QC

I did ask the police if they thought I should get the QC.

As I have said before they were very nice, fair and pleasant.

No doubt I'll need to review the situation when they return but I have been open and honest and I'll see how things pan out.

In the short term though, the American Bicycle Group could stop this nonsense overnight!

I didn't see the original thread with all the info but have I missed something?

Is reason for the ABG harassment action is because a UK employee had their name and business contact details published on an open forum. Can I also assume that there has been no emails which have been abusive or threatening in any way - or perceived to be threatening?

If companies can't take the heat when one of their products fails, they deserve to wither. I am sure that ABG would have received 8+ pages of superlatives, praise and recommendations had they dealt with this problem in a better manner. Now they have involved police, they have themselves, pulled their name into the gutter.

I have never contemplated Ti but if I was, I wouldn't touch ABG stuff again - there are always similar alternatives just as good out there in the bike market.

Good luck with this Infopete - complainingabout a bike warranty should never have involved the police calling at someones door on a Sunday (or any time).

"They" need to think about the Protection from Harrasment Act and take a more proactive view in relation to the incident complained of ;)
