  • Try NOT to take the replacement frame, why not ask them to please sponsor the fixing of the Cielo. Sorry your Cadillac broke, here's a new Chevy or Pontiac...nice.

ABG, I know you're reading this, I'll NEVER buy another Merlin frame (had the original with the press fit BB, who remembers that?) if you don't fix this guy's Cielo.

I'm looking for a new sportive frame and Merlin has a good offering, sure, but with this story I'm concerned about your customer serivce.

    Cheers.

infopete hopefully it will be a small crumb of comfort to you that since reading of your plight I have been trawling the net for TI bikes and two things I never realised, how expensive Merlin bikes are and I know now that because of your problem I certainly would not risk buying one.And so if that is how I feel I am sure that their will be many more like me so the small market Merlin have will without a doubt be affected.

  • Likewise. I'm in the market for a Ti Road frame next year. Merlin/Litespeed won't be making the shortlist.

    Agree with all comments made.
Still can't get over the attitude of the UK rep or whatever she is.

As for the police...even if someone had typed something, you can't prove it was the same person who normally logs on under that username.

    Oh...I had a party.....lots of people etc :)

Hope you get a speedy resolution to all this.
  • I had a Ti frame and it's replacement crack in exactly the same place - it's definitely a weak spot in some frames. My second frame was only few months old and had had an easy life, so certainly no impacts.

(Fortunately my replacement and eventual refund was totally friendly and as pleasant as it could be.)

Oh, and whenever companies are unreasonable like this, I'd totally recommend having a chat with trading standards so you can inform the company of your rights. It's feels good to have the law working for you occasionally :-)

+1. Goes on the list of best bike non-contenders along with Trek,
  • As an owner of a Merlin Extralight and a Litespeed Tuscany, I sincerely hope that nothing goes wrong with either of my frames, as I can only imagine the shenanigans that one would have to go through to bring any warranty claims to a successful conclusion.
  • I have read links to this thread on another two cycling forums, so looks like word is out... it seems silly that a company would be so flippant to risk their reputation over a frame, when they know how reactive the cycling community can be.

I bet that the first refusal to fix this frame, will have cost them at least 2+ new frame sales....Foolish behaviour for a company...
  • I can't believe all this hassle Merlin is causing. I've just read the cached post and the photos (as an ex-welder) looks like weld failure. Welding " usually should" be stronger then the metal it welds. If there's even a few bits of contaminates in it it'll fail to reach full strength. I should note I never welded Ti but most of the principles are the same. The bent drop outs would have been pushed out when the weld failed and you banked left a bit.

How the hell can the police be called? I'm puzzled on that on.

Hope this gets sorted for you Infopete as it's a beautiful bike (which I never got for my 50th  )

Well it could cost them more, if most of their potential customers are serious riders then it's likely they go on most of the popular sites like this one. Big shot in the foot I think.
  • Ti, the frame that will outlast you, isn't that the blurb?

I have a Litespeed and love it. I too sincerely hope it doesn't go wrong as I'm not going through all this rigmarole.

I won't be buying either another Litespeed or a Merlin when new bike day comes around (which occurs quite often at my house!)

Not for sale any more, I wanted to sell it to get a Colnago. Decided to sell the Cervelo instead as the Litespeed is a great winter bike.
  • Bloomin heck you`ve had so many bikes now i can`t keep up.yes i am jealous

Having read both this and the original thread, I can't help wonder how much of this has been created by one or two 'rogue' employees (the female mentioned in the other thread in particular) rather than the organisation themselves?

That said, a warranty is all about providing piece of mind for the consumer and this whole sorry tale undermines that piece of mind massively. The lack of any other obvious damage beyond a bent hanger makes it almost too amazing to suggest anything other than failure caused the crack rather than crash damage. I too will add my voice to those who are discounting these brands as a future purchase option.

I will also cheerfully not buy from Merlin or Lightspeed again. I'd really like to be updated on progress, please keep the thread alive!

I've just had two very nice policemen visit me with the view of giving me a harassment warning notice.

I pointed out I have been trying to get a work address for the American Bike Group in the UK so I can make a small claims.

I also pointed out I have not been harassing anyone and, at all times, I have tried to be polite and fair.

They've gone to discuss the matter with the policeman that asked them to visit me.

It's not very nice having the police turn up at night, Mrs P wasn't happy at all.
Oh and please remember to click on my blog:

The more clicks I get the higher it creeps up the google radar :)

Should the police not be focusing their resources in other areas.

Wow! If you must shoot yourself in the foot, best not to do it with a machine gun! Merlin (and their staff) certainly seem to be losing the plot big time. I'd have thought they could get into trouble over this. Maybe worth giving trading standards a call if you haven't already.

    This is mad!
  • I just Googled American Bike Group, nice stuff which I will not now touch until this thread comes to a satisfactory end. Using the police to settle this is outrageous, it is not what I pay my taxes for.

This thread needs to be kept at the top for everyone to see each day. At this rate, this thread will top American Bike Group own site when searched for in Google.

I would like to see how much integrity BikeRadar/CyclingPlus has over this affair, if they side with the consumer or big(ish) business/advertising.

Come on BR, let's see a serious (but fair) piece of investigative journalism on this whole sorry story, and print it.

Though I'm not holding my breath.

Bloody hell! American Bike Group distribute my Quintana Roo Seduza Time trial / Triathlon bike as well :x

(Typed in the full name so it will appear in Google Search!)
  • This is quite apalling. I am amazed that the police have taken this seriously enough to actually hunt you down!

Unfortunately, if someone makes a complaint, they have to attend etc.

For the OP - you could've just said that it wasn't you that typed the stuff in question.
Someone must've hijacked your user account etc.
No way of proving that it was actually 'you' that was sitting in front of your PC at the material time

Wow, police actually turned up and accused you of harassment? I guess American won't be getting any business off many people from now on. Can someone provide a list of brands to boycott?
