    Questions to ask yourself

what do i want to spend my hard earned cash on

By the time you've answered those honestly and squared the circles you'll have roughly the correct answer for you

    surely?

but why would you spend money on a bike that you cant ride properly, its embarresing, folk should put in the hard miles on a cheaper bike, how else will they learn their skills?

If it makes me happy why the chuff not

an extreme example but hopefully it gets the point across

Surely what? You make any sensible purchasing decision on a set of criteria similar to what I outlined. Depending on the answers you give to those questions will determine what bike you end up with and it'll more than likely be the right bike you.....which is the whole point.

people in my experience dont really care how much they spend on posh bikes, they spend the amount that feels right to them. To some, that £500 and to some others, who have the money to spend, spend £5000

you don't count because you're in a special category of mental patient who likes looking at bikes and machinery like others look at art work in an art gallery
  • Sometimes people may have expensive bikes but not have paid expensive prices.

Out of my quiver of bikes I have never ever payed anything close to full price for any of my bikes. (ok I was lucky with the Iron Horse with CRC!)

But sometimes... we may just be bike tarts and they are our porn as much as the person owning a £150 wreck may oogle over max power and a suped up saxo.
Think I need a bigger Garage.
  • Questions to ask yourself
Am I going to use it regularly irrespective of how shite I am on it
    [/i]

This is it for me, doesn't matter how much it costs as long as its get ridden, that's what it's all about !

It's a sin to leave a bike unused, and if it's an expensive bike then you'll surely go to hell

What's the point of having an expensive bike and riding it fast . . . . . no-one would notice it.

    Surely what?

He put a much more relevant 'question' than your buying criteria, if you want to spend your money on it then WGAS about anything else!?

Don't talk bollocks. Anyone with a brain has a practical buying criteria along with a "wish list" and works from there to make a purchasing decision. It's why you don't see 5 grand downhill bikes on canal paths.

If money really isn't an issue though, surely it's a case of what you fancy spending your money on. Trust me there's plenty of people who come into a bike shop and just want a nice bike. I'm not going to say to them "are you going to use it lots? Will you be using it to it's full potential?" there's no checklist before we let someone buy an S-Works!

If I had the money I'd buy an Audi R8 tommorow, wouldn't make me a better driver, and of course I'd never use it to it's full potential, and it would do the same as my Golf, but if I could I'd buy one. Bikes aren't expensive in the grand scheme of things!

as above you buy the right bike using a buying criteria irrespective of price, the amount of expensive FS bikes i've sat on or tested that have ludicrously short top tubes and i can't stand the geometry is nearly all of them - all criteria and part of the buying process.

in that scenario you're a salesman, and a bad one at that, enough said.

You buy a car using the same criteria as the bike, you don't pick the first one out and buy it because you like the colour of it unless you're a woman. And for what they are, push bikes are pisstakingly expensive compared to modern cars.

Why am I a bad salesman? Because someone comes in and wants an S-Works hardtail with full XX for riding on a canal path, should I say "I'm sorry sir, that's not hardcore enough, you should just buy a Hardrock. Infact, as you've not provided a training diary and evidence of how much you'll use it you should go to Halfords."

I imagine all Super car garages work the same, you have to do a lap of the local race circuit before theyll sell you a car.

The point was Will Snow said it comes down to what you want to spend YOUR money on, not some ridiculous criteria to justify it to yourself. Do you do your food shopping that way too? Hmmm... Is my palate sufficiently developed to enjoy these more expensive sausages.

    Q1 - Do I want it?

Q2 - If I buy it, will I still make rent / afford to buy my kids shoes / eat this month etc?

If yes, then get out credit card.

Why does it need to any tougher than that...

As an example, I've been seriously coverting a Transition Bottlerocket these last few months knowing that:

    a) It's way too heavy for what I'll use it for
    b) Its' way too gnaaarr for what I'll use it for

Fortunately the answer to Q2 above is 'no' at the moment so I'm saved from the embarrassment of people seeing me mince about on a freeride bike I can definitely not do justice to... but one day, it will be mine.

No, Meesterbond has it, it's as simple as that. Why on earth go through a pathetic checklist, if you want it and can afford it why go any further?

The fact is that a £5000 bike will ride better than a £150 one whether it's on a turbo trainer, on a tow path or world cup DH, I just don't get why anyone feels qualified to put down anyone elses purchase. It just reeks of jealousy.

I dont understand why this thread is still going!

As NJEE20 pointed out, if someone has the cash and wants to spend £5k on a bike then good luck to them! They're sure as h*ll not bothered what anyone else thinks.
  • With Blister,

A good sales man tries to guide you to something that will do the job you want it for the best, while hoping to sell the most expensive version of that for his commision this is the way good business reputations are established.

    Exactly!

Why do people find it necessary to dictate what other people do? Spend what you want, on what you want, when you want.
As long as theyre happy and not hurting anyone else then good for them!

youd be a bloody terrible salesman. You really would. I work in a phone shop and i get people coming in to buy an iphone (£300 - £600) just to check facebook on. Should I tell them to get lost? Fool.
