I seem to think he mentioned that he's a student. I may be wildly wrong though.

No you are correct; I was a student. Now I am an options trader, albeit early stages. And Iain before you mention that it takes many years - I do not work for an IB, rather a prop trading house, where you are given responsibility as and when you prove you can handle it.

It doesn't bother me if this is believed or not, just mentioned it for the sake of interest.

Like Iain says, you'd be surprised at the salaries most people earn in this industry.

I do have a delicious vision of Iain and ff both turning up for the meet and discovering that they know each other from the City.

Ha. That would be funny. But unlikely. I know one forumite at work and he's definitely not FF I'm now convinced FF's forum persona and real life persona must be completely different. I can't see forum FF as an options trader.

Also, don't believe the media that everyone in the City has loads of money

LOL. Because you have an image in your head of what a trader should be and I don't fill that for you. Generalisations aren't good. You of a good memory, will recall me saying sometime ago that you'd be surprised at what I do for a living.

I have worked in banking longer than you, so I've met lots of different kinds of traders. You still can't beat a Spot trader for being outrageous.

You must have a different work persona, because if you were as sensitive in the IB world as you are here you'd have a very tough time. I often though you're probably something like a quant - Or someone who'd like to be a quant.

Good luck with it - Not often you hear people doing prop trading at the moment.

Certainly you have been in the industry much longer than me and therefore had a much larger exposure to different types of people. I don't think I am sensitive here - what you perceive is probably more adequately described as passionate and not being afraid of holding a position or opinion you think is right, even if most people seem to differ. That being said, it is not to be mistaken with being stubborn or obstinate, as I can readily admit if I am wrong or adopt a changed stance or opinion as and when new perspectives or facts are presented.

In terms of those who are likely the most outrageous that I have been in contact with so far, I would say the brokers, like for euribor, who charge ridiculous fees per contract, making a ton for themselves and go home without any risk.

As an aside, when I say prop trading house, I think you may have ideas of being in a bank's prop desk taking directional trades. That isn't the case - I refer to my company trading with its own funds, so no clients or investors etc. I can obviously be more specific about the products and types of trading but here is not the place.

Anyway I guess this is becoming diversionary, the thread is about the meet you are setting up.

I'm all for Tusher's idea of Chawton House, or well at least the little tearoom across the road..I can quite easily get there in a hour on the bike from home..Dennis can buy the drinks with the £20 he still owes me from his TDF wager in the summer.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

I'm just back from my annual visit to the big smoke and need 12 months to clear the gunk from my nose and lungs and to de-stress so won't be able to make it  I think we should have one here in South Wales instead though - we can burn the second bikes of English cyclists who just come here to ride at weekends (or is that the preserve of the North Wales sub-group?).

South Wales? Eeek, that's even further than London, isn't it?

Although, a session in a velodrome would certainly be tempting.

What about Hampshire? Chawton House would be amazing. We could all sit elegantly sipping Earl Grey and debating pro-racing.

    Or not.

No, South Wales is really, really close

Problem is............I just can't imagine afx as being anyone other than a pixellated monkey. I doubt I would recover from the shock of finding a young, handsome man in his place.

And I have a picture of Iain as either a city type, or a laid back, white haired geography teacher.

Napoleon, we know, is a policeman. He will therefore have a wicked, black sense of humour and dutifully pay for several rounds of drink.

And I have no image whatsoever of frenchfighter. Which is probably a good thing, ff.

I would love to meet up with Ms Tree and Coriander. Has anyone seen Coriander recently?

Now there's a good topic for a thread.

The only ones I have any image for (other than those that have posted a picture of themselves - Nap D, Pokerface):

IainF: The main Stasi character from The Lives of Others

FrenchFighter: Simon Bird (Will) from The Inbetweeners

Biking Bernie: Kind of like David Starkey, but with a a goatee.

dennisn: Rowley Birkin from the Fast Show

deejay: Your average heavily tattooed, paunchy England football fan

Rick Chasey: A dutch guy I know called JP

And you, Tusher: Some sort of combination of Sharon Osborne and Helen Mirren (younger than her, of course) - basically I veer between the two.

Please nobody take offence, it's just what pops into my somewhat warped mind.

In case you are wondering, I have been compared in the past to: Norman Lamont, the De Boer brothers (Dutch footballers), Leonardo DiCaprio and Barry from Eastenders (and Extras). Take your pick (I only think the De Boers are actually close)

Well, I was out of the office last week and came back to finf the name on my phone changed to Clooney. Now, I'd like to think it were true but I think there's a slight hint of sarcasm there as the only resemblance is the hair colour! If it were true, the wife would be all over me so it's plainly not. :( Back in the mid 90's I was told I looked like Tim Henman - he has aged better than me (although I considered it an insult at the time)!

Gets my vote too, a little under an hour on the bike for me.

I can imagine everyone up north or in Wales googling this and then shaking their heads

Works for me - I'll figure out who's down and then propose some dates tonight.

Their chicken escalope is the only way to go in dirty Pav's.

    Really very good.

Not so much if you need to stay awake in the afternoon mind.

Right - The cool people who are down are

    iainf72
    andyp
    Daveyl
    Timoid
    Moomaloid
    Inkyfingers
    Rick Chasey

Plenty of time for others to add their names to the list - Don't be shy now. I know a few of the people and everyone is friendly and pretty good at talking to actual real people

Friday seems to be the preferred day so

    19/11
    26/11
    10/12

are all do-able dates for me, if we stick to a Friday.

Still open to places to go - Rick has suggested Rocket in the City and Davey has suggested Chandos.

I'll have you know I spent a very pleasant post Marmotte sunday afternoon in a hot tub in Alpe D'Huez with 5 or 6 members of this forum a few years ago.

I trust you city bankers will be just as upstanding for me.

  • Thank you for the invite Iain. I can't make it. Too far to travel (and I know when I am out of my depth!), and I am hibernating  .
Hope you guys have a good time, but for god sake stay clear of the 'common ground', we don't want too much of this agreeing nonesense in this forum, especially from a clique of agreeing buddies who drink together
