I've often wondered about Roche clawing back Delgado on La Plagne in 87. A monumental ride. Roche coming over the line frothing at the mouth and then collapsing on his bike... As a teenager it was hugely inspirational. As an old cynic....

That description sounds like the way i finished the La Plagne climb this summer and all i was doing was energy drink

I have wondered about this before, the miraculous recovery towards the end. One thing that doesnt get mentioned much though iis that he didnt sprint away from all the others. A guy called Denis Roux came over the line just behind him and looking back at the video of the stage seemed to be with him the whole way up. Another guy called Loro finished just behind and maybe he was part of the group too.

EDIT: Actually just looked into it more and Roche credits Loro and Roux with pacing him up the climb. Not saying that it was a clean ride but it helps me convince myself it was :)

(paragraphs 5 and 6 of the quoted bit)

everybody that year tested positive for that yet to banned masking agent/stimulant

    forgotten its name?

delgardo post career claimed he was feeling healthier because he no longer was full of a load of nasty products...

    Everybody?

Delgado tested positive the following year for probenecid if that's what you mean? Am not claiming that Roche was a clean rider back then but its what got me into cycling so i have an interest in convincing myself it was due to inner strength rather than other things

I was thinking of starting a thread for favourite clean rides. The criteria would be that they haven't been mentioned on this thread. Unfortunately, I think Roche's effort has definintely been mentioned now.

Well sorry. Maybe you should change your criteria? There's just been a bit of discussion about whether someone's favourite ride was completely clean or not and nothing has been proven. If by a clean ride you cant include any done when drugs could possibly have been chosen then i think you will be looking at a short list. Its my favourite clean ride anyway :)
  • Contador Stage 15 TdF 2009?....the one when he attacked, and then freewheeled around one of the breakaway riders Fun to watch, but wholly unbelieveable!

I'd say pretty much every Contador performance I have ever seen has been unbelievable in my opinion except for Paris-Nice where he must have left his stash at the hotel!

the clean guys are rarely at the front end of the race perhaps?

    You can prove people doped.

It's harder to say they haven't.

quite frankly given that the top 10 on any race over the last 20 years is packed with now confirmed dopers I think its beholden on the cyclist part to demonstrate as strongly as possible they are not!

the lot of them including the clean ones have nothing to complain about..

or stop denying it and setting out the rules of what they can do.

If someone came along and scientifically demonstrated that the riders should be allowed TrT on a 3 week tour as it was actually healthier for them (i dunno but I have heard it said) than just riding themselves into testosterone deficiency induced bone damage year on year.... I would listen..

Is racing 2 GTs a year for a decade a sensible thing to do? perhaps a 3 week tour is not a good idea to start with (sacrilege!)?

Thou I am less convinced that turning your blood into treacle is a good idea....

they/we are in this mess because we are in this mess.... its so much the cheating as the confusion.
