  • The 1989/90 Saracen I picked up the other day

    1666.jpg

Full Mountain LX groupset (but with Deore thumbies)
    Dia-Compe cantis
    Biopace Chainset
    Matching Saracen bottle cage
    Tange frame
    Derailer guard!
    Only the saddle needs replacing.

I'm tempted to do the Manchester to Blackpool on it next year if I can get on with the 16 inch frame and long seatpost.

I had one of those. I have absolutely no idea what happened to it... can't remember selling/scrapping/losing it so I might still own it. Somewhere.

Two of my bikes are over five years old. There's an Edinburgh Country steel framed tourer I bought new 6 or 7 years ago. Been a great bike and done lots of miles. Comes out in the winter a lot too (mudguards are wonderful). One day I'll put a nicer groupset on it, mainly Sora right now.

My mtb is a '97 Marin Mount Vision I bought earlier this year. It has an XT 8 speed group that's a joy to use and work like new. I bought it because it's so light, a good bit lighter than the current version which at 3000 quid is about 10x what this bike owes me. Climbs like a dream and the suspension works perfectly for me.

My Cannondale CAAD5 isn't five years old yet but I'll be keeping it a while. Just bought bought some used Mavic Ksyrium Elite wheels to upgrade it. Drivetrain is 9 speed 105 and I much prefer it to Sora!

Flexstems rule. Who needs a million inches of fork anyway. (Although I do have a more modern bike for real riding)

    XTC is from 2004
NRS is from 2000 (although I've only owned it a couple of years).
  • I did some work (and was forced to test ride an orginal 1982 Marin. It was horrible to ride compared to todays bikes, but I still wanted it. It still even had the original tires too...

My mate however owns a ex Raleigh team M-trax titanium (off a team raleigh rider) circa 1994 and it still gets used week in week out. Its fitted with the original Pace RC35's still.

i use a 92 (?) dawes die hard as my family ride bike (with my daughter in a babber seat on the back). it's followed me around my uni and work life, living in garages and sheds and used rarely for easily 12 years.

when it was hauled from the garage last year i'm pretty sure it still had the original tyres and inners on it, the old ever-ready light brackets, lock-mounts and plastic bottle cage. a friend helped me put some new bars on it (they were rusted badly by then), and some canti brakes to replace the totally rubbish centre-pulls.

it ran very well until last autumn when one of the inners finally had enough and blew out on a descent. when i looked at the state of the tyres i made sure i bought something reasonable as a replacement!

the next thing for replacement is the gearing - the biopace triple that is on there is pretty shot and i have to fettle on the fly to get full gear range. great bike though, and perfect for the job of hauling me and the bairn around.

  • My bike is a 2004 Stumpjumper FSR, which I have had for 7 years now. It's still great to ride, but I'm looking to replace soon ish as it's costing a lot to replace parts.

I also have a 1992 Pro-Flex 552 which I've had since new. It's got the Girvin Flex Stem. I haven't ridden it since I bought the Stumpjumper though, and it's permanently hooked up to the turbo trainer.

Because 2004 bikes were released in 2003, just like 2011 ranges are now becoming available.

This is my old GT Backwoods, must be somewhere in the region of 18 years old now:

    DSC00713-1.jpg

The only original thing on the frame is the seat post, I still have the original rigid forks somewhere.

It still runs like a dream, though reduced to road work now...
    XC: Giant Anthem X
    Fun: Yeti SB66
Road: Litespeed C1, Cannondale Supersix Evo, Cervelo R5
    Trainer: Bianchi via Nirone

  • I often ride one of the early, rigid frame Stumpjumpers, not sure of the year but same as the 25th anniversary 'Classic' that Specialized put out in 2007. Unfortunately the original wheels were kicked in by plebs but everything else, except grips, is original, including the rusted in place seatpost. Great bike.
  • I ride a 2002 Specialized Stumperjumper FSR comp.
Update the brakes to disc and new saddle.
