  • Say the difference in cost price is 10 pence and Giant produced 700,000 bikes a year, that's £70,000

Whats the first thing a lot of people do when buying a shiny new bike

Dump the cruddy clamp and fit a shiny expensive one thats no better but is shinier

I have a Hope clamp I know

Partially true but the hope one has a longer lever so its easier to clamp to the tension it needs. At least that was my justification for the bling
  • Lmao.. Pimp my ride goes two wheels...

Right so I have my new bike ordered, now to order my bling hope QR seat clamp, but how do I know the size????

I prefer a bolted one, so no probs for me. Usually work better.

Specialized put QR seatclamps on the bikes that ought to have them.

Not on the bikes that shouldn't though.
  • My bike came with just a clamp - it was spec'ed as QR, phoned them up and they send me a QR.

Also suspect that it saves them a few grams in their headline weight as well as the pennies.

Dont know about the Trance but a mate has an Anthem X4 size large and it takes a 34.9mm clamp. Hope this helps.

You do realise that since seat clamps bend a bit to open or close, you can fit a slightly smaller one, right?

You won't get away with a 31.8 or a 28.6 though, so I'd track down the right thing, Kona must do one.

Unless you adjust your saddle the whole time they achieve nothing, I wouldn't use one, any bike that comes with one I'll replace it with a bolt up job.
  • bolted and drop post is the way forward...

Why? I find it useful to change height on descents, then change back for climbs. Probably change height 2 or 3 times per ride, maybe more...

Because Njee is not normal. It weighs too much for him, and he only rides competitive XC style, or training for such.

Also, I'm 90% certain that a 28mm clamp will fit that Kona.

I have just read that HOPE now do a 30mm QR or Bolted. That might do it.

If you have a bolted clamp, are you telling me that when you want to drop or raise your post, you stop, take bag off, search for tool, ajust height, put tool away, put pack on and then start off again??? Only to re-adjust ten minutes later??? Really??

I don't adjust the saddle height on my Mojo, not a fan of having a mud/grease mash inside the seat tube and I'm fine getting off the back of it.

The Meta has the adjustable seatpost at the moment, with remote. It's about 300g heavier than a normal mid range post, you save 50g or so getting rid of the crappy seat QR and getting a bolt though.
  • Either you don't adjust or fit a bolted one and a drop post stopping to alter saddle height is a chore

Horses for courses really, I've never adjusted my saddle height, if I did I'd get an adjustable post. Actually I can't really adjust my saddle height anyway on my current bike, irrespective of clamp type!

That, is a very good point!

By the way, that wasn't a jibe at you earlier, I know by now that you are a racer, and a racer alone.

It's true, don't worry, didn't take it to heart! I did have a Fuel EX 9.5 for a while to play around on, which was great, but I still didn't lower the saddle! I'll try it sometime.

If I was doing the sort of riding where I was adjusting it lots I definitely think I'd go for an adjustable post, at least you know it's at the right height then.

I thought Giant were the same, but I would have thought the Trance was one of the models that would have a QR...

How indecisive! Not that surprising on the Anthem, it's more of a race bike, and no one's gonna stop in an XC race to adjust their saddle height. Am surprised on the Trance though I agree. Are they not just a standard 34.9 on Giants?

For the 2010 Anthem the seatpost is 30.9mm and the seat clamp is 34.9mm... I believe that the Trance is the same.
