I was gonna head that way, but since I'm on the tank, there's little chance of threatening a decent time, so I'm not going to bother.

no danger cjcp, the headwind had me beaten before I'd passed the tollgate

3:45, and not the most fun 3.45 either, dry spiky leaves hurt when blown in face

@CJ, never mind CXXC, another 15 seconds and you could get overtaken by The Iron Horse, now that would be embarassing! Only tried it once so far, whilst on the face of it not too much slower than the road bike (the commuter anyway), my legs were screaming for mercy by the final ramp at the top, took me a good few minutes to recover! Will have another go tonight.

    Get in. :D

Steady start, pushed it on the slight downslope, upped it for the next slope and, crucially I think, held back just before the first of the steep ramps.

There may have been a tailwind.
  • I was hyped up this morning for a crack at a PB after some intervals on College Road last week and a really good 70-miler at the weekend (I don't often get the chance to ride for that long with two small children at home). I thought all that would set me up nicely for a mid-week assault today.

Managed 2:50 but felt horrible. Wobbly legs and nothing extra to give on the flatter bits.

I'd like to go sub 2:40 before the end of the year.

I'd love to go sub three minutes, but I'll have to get busy on the turbo trainer and bring out the best bike if I'm to threaten that.
  • I only have a best bike!

I feel guilty if I soft pedal on the Opera.

Ha! If we're talking best bikes, may I submit my 2:43 on the Viner a month or so back. Sadly my form has collapsed off the edge of a cliff since and I can't see it returning this side of the New Year, at the same time it sounds like you're ready to put down a proper fast marker so thought I'd do my bit to spur you on! :)

i was going to have another go this evening, but seeing as the wind appears to be changing from northerly to SW-erly from 6pm-ish (!) and i've just demolished a king prawn tikka massala for lunch, its safe to say it ain't gonna happen.

wonders if ketsbaia rounded his new time down or up

well, I finally picked last night to try it on my commuter, I picked a windy night and was carrying groceries in order to set a low baseline for improvement  .
    I clocked a time of 4m05s.
I weighed my bike and shopping when I got home and found the combined weight was 46lb (21kg), (bike = 31lb (14kg) and shopping 15lb (7kg))

I think I might be able to knock some time off that

I did 1.10 last week, down from 1:18 (with backpack). Went up a couple of times last night to see what the difference was out of the saddle and in the saddle. Last night, the former was better.

Gave this a go this evening after a hard couple of laps of the park, so not technically a commute, no luggage etc, but not fresh. Rear cog kept on jumping (had a bad crash a month ago - replaced the dropout but looks like I may also need a new rear mech) which was annoying and I went off too hard at first and had to sit down by the Vineyard school as I thought I'd blown! Clocked 57 seconds, and I should knock another couple off that if I MTFU and keep sprinting all the way and if my bike behaves.

Worked from home yesterday, but decided I'd do a 'commute' afterwards and took the flyer, sans bag, up to College Road.

Smashed it. Good strong start but not too fast, changed down past the station and held it nicely up to the next flat bit, cruised to the bottom of the first slope then hammered it up there, out of the saddle for the last bit, kept it going on the next false flat then out of the saddle for the final steep bit of Fountain Drive and sprinted all the way to the top.

Stopwatch said 00.00.00, so clearly I did it in no time at all.

I had more in the tank by the top as well, which was annoying.

So I did another circuit and went further down the S Circular, through Alleyn's Park, along Alleyn's Road and up Dulwich Wood Park/College Road.

Not having a 5kg bag on your back makes a massive difference. :D

  • cjcp, it's not very steep or that long so was very much a sprint rather than a hill-climb and my 85kg rower's physique helped me out for once. I had another crack the other night and thought I was smoother on the bike but finished in 62 seconds. I'm still just outside the hour mark for 3 laps of RP and I have no doubts I'd be towards the bottom of the pack on a longer hill like College Road.

So what was the time? You've already moved ahead of me by 2 seconds, don't tell me I've got a bigger gap now!

That's the point. I don't know. I thought I'd hit the stopwatch at the tollgate, but when I got to the top, it was still on zero. So either I did it so fast I altered the space-time continuum or I failed to press the stopwatch button enough to make it start.

I know which explanation I prefer.

Ah - sorry, I thought you went back and repeated it

Have you considered that I may have tampered with it? Used my special ray powers to stop it working?

Or as you say you forgot to press start hard enough, unlikely as that explanation sounds.

Cold, clear, slight tailwind last night. Not much in the way of SCR on the way in from Park Royal but didn't pootle either so a nice warm up. Quite a bit left in the legs by the top so reckon can still get down to the elusive 3:00 mark before New Year :) Sorry Ketsbaia, that'll teach to record your decent times . . .

Not steep or long, but a good effort none the less because you have to keep the power on. I can't seem to improve on the 1 min 10 secs I did a few weeks back. I'm doing sets of three and it feels like I'm getting slower!

Interesting to note your 3 lap time. The fact that you're a good bit faster than me up Richmond Hill seems to confirm what I have suspected for a long time: that I lack power over short distances. I've tried hammering it out of the pedals and seated, but no improvement on my PB.
