I was wondering how long before you posted a time. Quite tempted to swing down there myself as Google maps say it's about the same overall distance as my normal commute.

Managed 3.40 tonight with a headwind, but had to slow half-way up to cough up some expectorate, which can't have helped. Still, at least I didn't have to go down to the small chainring this evening, which is progress.

Can't wait to get back to my fighting weight/lung capacity.

I was at the savethevelodrome meeting at Dulwich College the other night, so ti would have been ideal opportunity to give it a blast (though I was on fixed :( ). My son would have posted a great time. But the other rider we were with had more sense, so we went home instead :D

The lad contented himself with humiliating a London Dynamo rider on a Cervelo up the hill towards Tulse Hill.

Nice. What do you think he might do up there? Does he race and what not? He's a whippet, isn't he? :)

He mainly races track (hence going to the velodrome meet), but he does love zooming up hills.

Must get him back to College Road (with instructions to wait for his dad at the top :D )

For JonGinge? I think he's faster than that, I reckon well under 2 hours 30 minutes.
The above is a post in a forum on the Intertubes, and should be taken with the appropriate amount of seriousness.

will be having my 1st crack at this tonight, probably not ideal preparation having 75km in the legs from yesterday but hopefully should be able to post a decent enough time, somehow don't think i'll be threatening MH though.

Apart from getting a good rolling/flying start, any other tips for attacking this climb? it will probably be dark by the time i get there so might be difficult to gauge exactly what's in front of me, but that might be a good thing :!:

I'd say don't go too hard too soon. And when you get to the first steep bit, it's time to give it the gas.

Don't go off too hard - I happened to be passing that way yesterday morning on the good bike so thought I'd see what i could do, set off like a scalded whippet but cracked about half way up, damage limitation after that! For a first attempt try and leave something in the tank for the final steep bit, always nice to finish feeling strong.

cheers ketsbaia, from google maps it looks like 1.5km from the SC to the top, when does it really ramp up?

if anyone's passing that way tonight i'll be on the blue scott, i'll probably head up camberwell grove and drop down calton avenue into college road, so my scalp will be there for the taking, hopefully to be reclaimed on college road itself :D

Last 200 or so metres really. Up until then the gradient is fairly light.
  • Purely out of curiosity, I just traced the route and profile, using Quo and OS maps. The route runs north to south on the right of the image, with the South Circular marked as the red road to its north. 1.31 km/58m. I haven't been up it for a month or so, but the profile, which looks fairly steady, seems to hide the final kick that my legs certainly felt.

It would be interesting to see whether other more expensive mapping tools give a different profile - Quo really is the poor man's Garmin but the OS elevation data is usually accurate.

If I had any legs left over after the weekend I'd give it a try today - the following wind should make for a quick ascent.

Must have been 7.15pm when i got to the tollgate, pitch black except for the warmish orange glow of the street lights showing the way up, i realised i'd been steadily climbing from the dulwich picture gallery so legs were warmed up nicely, luckily got a clear run through the tollgate and didn't start too hard as advised but was on the drops anyway (every second counts right?!), accelerated over the flatter section and speed bump, passed the station on the right, quick time check has me between 1/3 and 1/2 of the way i reckon, think its ok-ish timewise but start to push, no traffic so hold primary and get out the saddle as the road turns upwards, brief respite in gradient so back in the saddle before the final kick up at the end, reach the top and pull over to the side of the road to check the time and breathe....a 3.14 and relatively happy, maybe could have pushed harder at the start but that may have meant more struggling at the end.

i compose myself and look up to see what can only be described as traffic carnage all around me, i know there's another thread on here somewhere about those 2 mini roundabouts, so i avoid them by taking a left and another quick left and head back downhill, accepting the gratitude from my thighs

Nice night for it tonight. Got there around 8.15, slight tailwind and I was close to a commuter PB - 2:56, but with backpack and in the dark this time. Feels like I'm starting to get over my recent sloth like state!
  • I rolled up next to a chap on a red and white Fuji Track near Dullwich College. It had all the makings of a good tussle as we rolled on upto the start, I mean barrier... Unfortunately we parted ways at the Fountain Rd / College Rd fork... :( Not my night for an effort

Come on. Own up who is it? What was your time on the Hill? It was a perfect night for a good time: cool and a wicked tailwind all the way to the top. 8)

  • Didn't manage to get a time last night, but did manage to hold off a chap on a red Wilier all the way to the top. Might possibly have broken the SCR rule about showing no pain, but there was nobody in front to say

When I saw the post title I was intrigued, having been riding up and down this hill for the past 30 years. I had a timed bash last week. I'm sure I can get the time down a bit - I think the key is remembering to push it on the flat bits as well.

That's where I fall down - I set off quick, and usually finish reasonably well, but need to really push harder on the flattish bits in the middle, particularly the bit after the station. Obviously experience is good for a few seconds as well!

Much better tonight, clocking three minutes flat to the bottom of the final steep bit. Had to stop halfway up it, though, as there was a ruddy bus blocking the road. Probably wouldn't have threatened the PB as the headwind at the bottom was too strong and my lungs still aren't back yet, but compared with the two attempts last week, I'm going in the right direction.

The wind was in my face until the first steep section, then dropped. Once I got to the top and headed down towards Sydenham Hill, it was in my face again. I seriously considered heading round and trying again, but I'm glad I didn't as Sod's Law was in play and the wind changed direction so I was cycling into it all the way home.
