  • Anyone thought about cycling the path just past the chruch on the left (behind the white picket fence) ? that looks steep

OT, but I've shamelessly copied Mat's idea by timing myself up Richmond Hill on my commute home. Much shorter at 1:18 (last night's time) and doesn't have the nasty little kicks CR has.

No detour this evening for me. Only got my Aldi merino top as protection, so am heading straight home tonight.

    /disappointed

There's actually two pathways - I asked the same question about the longer lower one opposite Sydenham Hill Station, top of page 2 on this thread. Specialized Needs got lured up it by a TortureforLondon map that was passing itself off as a TfL cycle route....

no attempt for me this evening either, may possibly have something to do with the half full bottle of Namaqua diamond coast reserve shiraz 2010 sitting in front of me.....

Had a crack tonight complete with new cassette (11-23), which didn't help.

Miserable 3.29, although I'm putting most of that down to getting used to the new gearing and being determined not to change down to the small chainring again. My lungs still aren't back yet either.

    Start and finish points?*

*Probably needs its own thread as that one could be popular...

Start where you turn off the main road (opp. GBK) and finish when you get to the top (it's quicker to turn left because you can see the traffic and, if necessary, keep the speed up).

I took a look at it and thought - 'no thanks, not today'...

Back on the Iron Horse today, managed a surprisingly sprightly 3:25, even with a streaming cold!

Went up it last night on the leviathan. It was harsh.

No idea how long it took but I swear it went light and dark again.

I can't seem to break 3.20 without feeling like an absolute gibbering wreck by the top. Maybe I should go faster at the bottom? Carrry less gear? Pootle the previous 13 miles? Answers on a postcard please!

    Shoulda seen that coming.

And the only response I'd give in the same scenario too . . .

TBH, I don't think I'll threaten my PB until the weather gets better again.

But when I set it, I steadfastly resisted any SCR action to save my legs. I reckon it made a difference.

Problem is, I really can't resist giving it the gas going up Denmark Hill.

This is true. My PB for the whole commute was set when I held back along Millbank and DSC rather than pelting along as fast as I could. A more even distribution of awesomeness is required.

Wulfhound has a point. Mebbe not Red Bull, but by the time I get to the South Circular, I'm always feeling thirsty but don't have anything to drink. Could be time to mix up some energy drink.

I've been up the one by the station a few times - in small ring not a problem - not timed it though

Does this mean to finish at Friar's Stile Road (ie the first junction where you don't have right of way) or further up towards the park at the Queens Lane roundabout? Will have to give this a go once the lbs fixes my bike (cracked rear mech hanger) as I live on the route :)

  • notsoblue Nightingale Lane is shorter and steeper still and hardly ever any traffic. Great for an hour of reps, straight up, freewheel down, repeat until dead.

    Friar's Stile Road. Didn't fancy racing across a junction :) .

I did 1.10 last week, down from 1:18 (with backpack). Went up a couple of times last night to see what the difference was out of the saddle and in the saddle. Last night, the former was better.

On Nightingale Lane? Is there something wrong with you?

I turn left at the top, down Friar's Stile Rd, then loop back round to go up again; turning right off Petersham Rd can be a bugger.
