Not long til the finish now fans.

Long tough day.

Especially long for poor St Ivan who is ill but still in the race. Bram Tankink out.
Fckin' Quintana … that creep can roll, man.

'Power' that now sees him over 40 minutes down on Contador.

Seriously, if Contador and Schleck go head to head we could see some real racing. The only way a break will stay away is if the main contenders let it.

    Right on cue.

    11:50 CEST (197km remaining from 199.5km)

Egoi Martinez (Euskaltel-Euskadi) is up there too, and it looks as though Lance Armstrong might fancy slipping into a break today as he moves up towards the front.

    11:52 CEST (197km remaining from 199.5km)

A group of eight has now gone off the front with around 10 seconds of an advantage. Nicolas Roche (Ag2r) and Lance Armstrong are both in there. Meanwhile Ivan Basso is struggling at the back of the bunch. He hasn't been able to transfer his Giro form to the Tour.

Reading Basso's Tuttobici comments, I'd not be surprised if he abandoned. He's not well.

    Sorry.

Let's face it, what we all really want is a titanic battle between Contador and Schleck, which probably means they will ride tempo until the final 5km of the last climb...

    Rogers gone.
Schleck losing the MJ was a blessing in disguise.
Astana struggling to control this and the Saxo roulers already dropped.

Brajkovic the next man to pop.

The break has some pretty good riders in it. Wiggins and Armstrong both going for the stage win as that's all that is left to them now. Vino is in there too. I think they might well stay away.

But Sanchez and Menchov still could gain a lot from racing, rather than letting a break go away, and they don't seem to be worried about descending. It could be an interesting day.

What happened to Nicolas Roche? One moment he was with the breakaway, then dropped by the peltoton. Puncture?

At least my PTP pick (Martinez) is in there. It's the sort of stage where a break will stay unless they are too much of a threat. Vino in there should ensure no chase from Astana as he's presumably the highest placed in the break?

if they come over the tourmalet in small groups going to be brytal

    bloc headwind

if the chase behind has a large working group they will get caught easily

charteau did well to make the break
