Rockshox PIke axle, a bargain at £40! Not!
Why? Mine was stuck in the front hub and I sadly had to butcher the damned thing to get it out :(

ahh i've been there and done that. I got the axle of my 36 floats stuck a while ago. ended up spraying wd40 on it for a few days and driving it out with a hammer. i had to replace the bearings in my pro 2, but still cheaper than a new axle/set of lowers. now i always make sure there is a little spot of grease on the axle!

Good to know I'm not alone, could have been worse, I could have got an unrepairable flat on the trail, then I would have been screwed.
I tried the 20mm Maxle from the Revelation Airs but the "newer" Maxle is a slight different design

€227.64 (incl P&P) from bike-discount.de. Let's see how long they take to deliver, then it's over to my ham-fisted mechanicking (?) skills to fit it all

i couldnt resist for that price, a guy at work bought them and said they took his oakley lenses! i am now intrigued!

also being able to video the commute/forest rides/duathlons might be well worth it!

still no sign of these bad boys, deal extreme living up to their usual reputation and taking forever to deliver!

Don't listen to yoohoo! He's already shown us he can't even go round a corner without falling off and breaking something!
  • 2x Nobby Nic 2.25 Evo Pacestar Tubeless Ready
    Valves
    Sealant
    25mm rim Tape
    Track Pump

Should save me 2lb off the wheels in total
That's in addition to the 1lb my new wheels will be saving.

Should mean the Edison comes down to around 27lbs (which is lighter than the Mmmbop was) :D

    I can't deny it :)

At least I didn't pull the old webbo trick of saying that I broke myself trying to jump some sick rad gnarly 30ft gap. I was even honest enough to show everyone the photos of me being unable to turn a corner without ending up in hospital.

When a camera is pointed in my direction I do tend to hit things a bit too fast :D

    Sweet!!

Mine's in at around 28.5 at the moment but I'm seriously toying with tubeless for the Alps this year. Let me know how you get on with the kit - the one thing that has put me off is the faffing that kind of seems wrong on such a simple to work on bike!
  • That's what put me off previously. Turns out that with proper tubeless ready rims and proper tubeless ready tyres, it's not really a faff at all.
Will report back once it's all here and fitted :)

Haha. i've ridden the red route and the shredder before and found them to be pretty smooth (for the most part) but i've never been anywhere near the full on downhill track so i guess we'll see how it goes. i might put up a little mini review or something once i've ridden them. don't seem to be able to find a whole lot of information about them online so might be helpfull to some people.

just a work of caution, i tried a pacestar nobby nic on my back wheel a few weeks ago. put a great big tear in the sidewall, and I wasn't doing anything stupid, or riding anywhere with sharp/jagged rocks. great tyre though. grippy, fast rolling, and light weight. just wish it was a bit more durable.

nice. if only shimano didn't make the AM41s a 'gimp shoe'
  • Bad times. I did a similar thing on a Racing Ralph on the XC bike a couple of years back. Since then I've been only using Snakeskin versions.
I was hoping their claims that the 2011 models were improved strengthwise were true. Hopefully you were just unlucky
  • yeah i kinda hope i was unlucky as well, i really like the nic as a tyre. been thinking about trying a fat albert trailstar on the front. the weight is almost as good as a nobby nic, but with softer rubber compounds for better grip etc. did you order the snakeskin ones or just the normal?
  • Nah, just the normal 2011 pacestar Evo version. The 2011 ones all come Tubeless ready, so I am hoping that means (slightly) thicker sidewalls. Although at 540g each, I guess probably not.

I've got a set of snakeskin Fat Alberts in the garage though. If it comes down to it, I'll just go back to running them and buy a rimstrip.
  • fair enough. i almost ordered one of the snakeskin nobby nic pacestars after i ripped the first one, but it kind of put me off them. went with a continental rubber queen black chilli in the end. no complaints as of yet.

That's the thing isn't it, you can't really expect the same level of toughness from a lightweight tyre.. My Minions are tougher than my Nobby Nics but they weigh about 50% more. Just a tradeoff.

Who's doing the best deals on 2011 NN Snakeskins?
  • Merlin are doing Snakeskin NNs for around £50 and a pair which is pretty good.
I'd assume they're the 2010 version but have no idea tbh.

The 2011 2.25 Folding EVO Pacestar Double Defense HD Guard / TL Ready Snakeskin (they do like long names) is £42 each on nextdaytyres.

Just had a look at actionsports.de and seen them at £35.50 (39euros) delivered 3 days for them in 2.4 snakeskin.
  • Tyres ordered at 16:09 yesterday, arrived 10:00 today

Nextdaytyres never fail to impress me.
