Last couple of nights there has been a rear light ahead of me that I chase down and pass, very rare to see any other cyclist going home into Bristol along the Portway at 22:20, last night I had a decent look at the bike as I passed it. Rear hub was as big as my rear rotor and the bottle on the downtube was as big as an Impériale, yes it was an e-bike I passed and left behind.
A guy in work also has an e-bike and he's 10+ years younger than me and the only time I've gone the same way as him cause of the prevailing wind I came within 100 yards of catching him after he had a 3 minute head start on the 12 minutes uphill ride we both rode.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

After a few years using a Kask helmet I've gone back to a Giro. Much better fit for me, but most importantly the slightly higher front means you can wear a cap with the brim down and still see where you are going.

    Amazing.

I'm needing to buy the flat where I'm currently living and the valuation came in at £145k, to make the repayments manageable, I've got the deposit coming from my grandfather, the landlady said she do the flat cheap when she informed me of her intention to sell. A phone call today with her giving her an update on proceedings and she's agreed to go as low as £110k :D

    @redvee - that's excellent :)

My own little anti-rant today is one of the final bends of the commute - it's always a bit dodgy, despite being the main road - down hill 90° sharp left bend (sub 20mph in the car) - I wasn't pushing it - took the lane as I always do - came in wide and checking my speed - front wheel slipped - not once, but TWICE! little expletive (only little) and stayed up right - fortunately nothing coming the other way as I did run over the white line on exit ...

Good to hear, slowbike! Front wheel slipping is always super scary.

Got caught out by a driver suddenly stopping in front of me to let a family cross the road. Thankfully I was on the disc braked mountain bike which is still fitted with marathon winters, I wasn't exactly going fast..

It wasn't the fact that they stopped, its the fact that none of their brake lights worked - by the time I'd recovered my composure, and then caught the driver up a km later as they pulled into a layby to go to the shops, they had a go at me for not being able to see their brake lights.

They had a passenger with them, so I got the passenger to get out and asked the driver to press the brake pedal - the passengers face, and then the drivers face when none worked was kinda amusing, if it wasn't so damn frustrating. 2 normal brake lights, and the high line light had all failed.

I'll check the reg # later to see if it's actually got an MOT..

Riding round the Kingston one way system on the way home and some twunt in an Audi tries to accelerate round me and go for a left turn. Thankfully realised I was still alongside braked hard and aborted. Got going again and went for the next left, but I was still there, as was the car behind me.
I reckon his inability to wait for a moment probably added several minutes and a reasonable diversion to his drive home at least. If he doesn’t know the roads maybe a mile or so.

Had a MGIF incident with a WMV that almost saw me hitting a bus, while doing about 45 kph and with stopped traffic ahead. He honked. I hit the back of the van. That angered him and tried to cut me but, alas, couldn't maneuver anymore with the traffic ahead. Good riddance, motherlover.

EDIT: Had a sh!t day today. I should have been more assertive and on primary before that incident, but I'm not taking that crap from WMV. Not today.

It could be the switch on the pedal is bust, so none of them come on.
It happened on my previous car, but it was kinda obvious they weren't working because i check them every now and then.

Just cracked open the aldi cycling vest baselayer I bought circa may - Blimey, for something so cheap, it's absolutely spot on for this weather under a long sleeved jersey, as it seems to act as a windproof layer as well.
Mixed with the multi-tights that I found at the weekend having assumed they had made their way to the bin, meant I goldilock'd todays' layering.

I saw a really weird one the other day - car had its front lights on, but not rear lights. I told the driver - turns out it was a hire car, and the lights were on the automatic setting. Once she switched them to manual, the rear ones came on too...

Bright sunshine both days this weekend = 150 miles of pure winter base mile goodness, including the Cat & Fiddle on Saturday. What winter weekends were made for. Could have done without the relentless easterly though...

Daylight running lights an increasing problem. People drive around with them on at night blissfully unaware that they have no tail lights. :(

Surprised that it was set to auto I'd have expected that to turn on the main lights once it got sufficiently dark. My car has auto lights (but not daylight running lights) and the only time I ever override it is occasionally on dull days and in rainy and foggy conditions.

I'd always assumed that the people doing it were being dumb and not either manually turning on the lights (or setting it to auto mode) but perhaps the stupidity lies with the car manufacturers. :(

I've only her word for it that it was set to automatic; given that it wasn't her car, it's quite plausible she was wrong.

I had no idea daylight running lights were front only; like your car, mine has automatic lights (which I use almost all the time) and no DRLs. I suppose there's a rationale for them being front only, but I can't imagine what it might be. That's a major trap for the unwary (who checks the handbook before jumping into a hire car?)

Whereas for me heading south west from Dorking to West Wittering yesterday it was a beautiful 125km of tail wind. Kept on smiling all the way on the train home

Jealous! Am down in That London next week, considering riding home to Manchester on the Sunday - what's the betting that predominantly southern/eastern weather we've had in the past couple of weeks turns into a raging northerly?

It wouldn't surprise me. Some car manufacturers do strange things. I see more of these driving around than I do people that haven't turned on headlights at the moment. :(

    Something I know I'll be checking if I hire a car. :)

We did a two minute stint on the beach for a few selfies. Not many cars queuing for the car park at this time of the year. Then we headed to The Landing cafe for a crab sandwich and a macchiato before riding to Havant to catch the train back.

Have joined my local club (New Malden Velo) and and actually out cycling on a weekend which is fun and also pushing me speed and distance wise. Its nice to find some like minded people who also want to be out by 7am so that you also have good time with your family once done!

I'm still not riding since I was hit by a car on Tuesday 5th (it was okay riding with one sore wrist/forearm but riding with them both sore & weak not so good) so I cheered myself up by editing some unused footage from the Summer to remind me of the good times.

Approaching a petrol station whilst riding on the SUP and an Audi indicates to pull into the garage and I'm expecting it to pull straight across the SUP and go onto the forecourt, but no it stopped and waited for me. As I was far enough back and aware of what could possibly happen I slowed and let the car across.

  • Father Christmas brought me among other toys, a bar bag, for bike packing etc, which is perfect for taking my change of clothes, and has balanced the the bike, I already carry a man bag with iPad Dlock at least one meal maybe two. Which does make for a heavy bike! And a rear heavy one.

The bar bag means the bike feels so much better, it’s weight means has inertia but feels so much more lively, and much closer to the MTB it once was! Very pleased making my commute much more enjoyable.

One of theses https://www.polaris-bikewear.co.uk/Ventura-Handlebar-Bag-p/pol01-7529.htm on my old MTB with its huge stem etc, plenty of room for it to fit. Ive only used it a few times, hasn't been very wet yet so no idea how waterproof it really is, etc.
