    Yodel did a delivery
  • Putting together a set of ready to go wheels for the MTB (using pre-built rim/hub from taylor wheels) ready for winter riding, went to use the spare tube that I normally carry on each bike (aim is each bike always has a 2 tubes in a saddle bag)
Turns out that when I'd leant one to someone, they'd given me a 700c tube rather than a 26" when they came to replace it.

Anti-rant, because I found it while at home, rather than out on the bike somewhere..

Somebody at my station had accidentally put their bike lock around my bike, as well as their bike and the bike rack.

Happily, they’d only looped it around my pannier stay. A kindly cyclist stopped and lent me his allen key to remove the stay.

4 days commuting on the trot ... not done that for a while :) usually because of child drop off/pickup duties or weather ... so it is nice to have achieved it ... just as it seems my commute by bikes may be coming to an end.. for now ..

Doesn't seem that anyone else is happy about anything?

Oh well - I'll add another then ..

I'm going fractional ... :) Swapping duties around means I get to look after Mr Slowbike Junior 1 day a week - rather than going to work :) So should get more riding in - even if it is on a kids bike and not too far.

There's also a possibility that I can continue to cycle commute - possibly even increasing it a day a week - best get my winter commute sorted then!

Well - today is my last Friday commute for the foreseeable. Despite the weather warning (heavy rain this morning) I biked it - stayed dry and had a nice tailwind too.
Hopefully I'll still be able to do a few bike commutes from next week - but we'll wait and see.

I got absolutely drenched last night on the way home after test riding a new bike; it started out as one of those rides where you think "ah, it's only light drizzle, it'll be fine" , and then cats and dogs appear, apparently out of nowhere, and you're soaked to the skin; at which point there's no point putting on a rain coat, as your shoes might as well be buckets.

I can imagine all those drivers in cars that screeched past me thinking "I bet he's sorry for that", or "he deserved that, get off the damn road"... as they drove like muppets through standing water.

However, I smiled the entire way home, thinking out much I was enjoying it, and those miserable b*&*&ds in cages wouldn't be enjoying the feeling of dancing in the rain.

Agree. Don't mind getting wet so much, it's the drying out kit and cleaning bike afterwards that's the problem.

    cleaning bike afterwards

It'll wait until the weekend. Or the next one, or possibly the one after that, right?

I've got one of those shoe & glove driers, but it's timed, and I didn't put it on for long enough last night.
I change everything else daily anyway, so not fussed.

    Spare pair of shoes ....

    or in my case

Spare pair of shoes or the other bike which has different cleat requirements - hence another pair of cycling shoes ... N+1 ... ;)

Yeah, I've tried the N+1 pair of shoes a number of times, but with my islands for feet I can't get anything that fits - I've currently got 4 pairs of BNIB shoes in that I bought dirt cheap on fleabay or gumtree, none of which fit properly. I really ought to flog them...

Buy another pair of the ones that currently fit you?

I started off with a cheap pair of Shimano's ... I've stayed with the same brand & range since - because they fit and they're comfortable ... perhaps a more expensive pair would be better ... but I'm a bit of a skinflint ;)

DHB shoes are fairly wide and cheap.

I got a pair of these back when they were on for thirty something quid a few months back - http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/dhb- ... prod164174 - then got another pair. Haven't regretted it.

Free returns if you don't get on with them... and you have a year to do it.

I usually take a UK size 13, 48 was fine for me.

Provided I can find space for it in the porch I think I'll be buying one of those.

I've don't like the ones I currently fit in - the DHB troika things, got at £35, because they don't have a rubberised grip, and i don't clip in a lot, so like that rubberised sole on SPD one sided, flat the other, pedals.

The ones I had previously were specialised tahoes (body geometry) , which I loved, but are 10 years old, and eventually fell apart.
I've tried the last 3 years versions of them In store , and they've changed, and don't fit. I've tried numerous shoes in store, when I've managed to get to them, but not found any that fit.

Like you, I'm a skinflint, and really can't justify more than £50 on a pair of shoes.

    Highly, Highly recommend them.
Make sure you've got it in a well ventilated area though; it's like a tumbledrier that needs a vent.

It's incredibly pleasant to put it on for 5 minutes before a sub zero ride...

A wet ride home is better than a wet ride to work, as when I get home I can dump all the wet kit into the washing machine then take my time getting dried etc, not a luxury we have when getting into work wet.

I've got one of those shoe & glove driers, but it's timed, and I didn't put it on for long enough last night.
I change everything else daily anyway, so not fussed.

Another shoe drier owner here, saw one of the cyclists I follow on Twitter bought one and got an Ebay link from him and bought one myself for something silly like £15. Can't remember the last time I used it but winter is approaching so can see it being used more soon.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

It's 15 weeks to the day today that I broke my wrist badly (both bones broken, one into four pieces) and it had to be operated on and plated but finally, yesterday morning I managed to get out for a 'proper' ride (I'm discounting the 2.6km test ride I did a month ago and realised that nope, it still hurt too much then).

On a gloriously sunny, Autumnal morning I got on the best bike and off I went. It took me a while to get ready because all of the kit that is normally so close to hand was scattered all over the house and garage, down the back of cupboards and drawers where it had lain unloved and unused. I never did find my arm-warmers so it's lucky it was so warm and neither could I locate my Garmin so I recorded it on my smartphone.

After pumping up the tyres I rolled off the driveway and down my gently sloping road. I rode less than twenty metres before having to get off to check the front skewer was tight and the wheel bearings weren't shot cos it felt so strange. Both were fine.

I rode on another 20 metres and got off again and did the same on the rear. That was fine too. Then I checked the brakes. All were good.

It was my mind that wasn't good and I wobbled along until I got a few klicks under my belt and warmed up.

I finally ended up doing circa 50k. I was so much slower than usual and huffed and puffed up Box Hill but it was great to be back even if there was nothing left in the tank at the end.

Even the phone failing to record the last 20km or the various pictures that I took along the way couldn't dispel the great feeling of being back in the saddle.

I'm planning on rejoining the joys of CS7 on Wednesday but don't imagine I will trouble the SCR scorers for a while. I still need to find my Garmin, arm-warmers and lights for a start. Last time I rode it was 30 degrees+ and 18 hours of daylight.

Bought the next size up bike for Little Slowbike a few weeks ago (bargain price!) intending on giving it to him at Christmas ... not to be - he's way too big for his first pedal bike - so Santa came early and he had it at the weekend. Needless to say he was delighted - a couple of wobbles and he's away.
Followed this by a move of the follow-me kit from his first bike to this bike ... of course, the tag strap around the downtube is too short (cut to size) and the front wheel is not a QR skewer - aggh - where did I put the spare bits !! After searching the garage & shed twice - finally found the bits - in the study ... doh!
Nearly lost my 19mm ratchet spanner - Little Slowbike helped me remove the old hub nuts and put the new ones on - announcing that he was having the spanner for his tool box ! Waited till he went to bed then retrieved my spanner ;)

Now to get some lights fitted on his bike :)

he's got some similar ones already - back light is sorted, need a good head light for night riding so we can go chasing shadows ... will probably just re-utilise my battery failing cateye nanoshot+ ... it's bright enough and we won't be out for >1hr ... that'll do for now.
