Don't forget it's not just about the ride. Your temperature can drop quite quickly when you've finished, especially if you have a train journey home. So a fresh base layer and a soft shell or gilet is a good item to pack

    Contents of my backpack;
Camelbak with 1.5 litres water and 2 750ml bottles with water too
The concensus appears to be that you should be aiming to consume at least a bottle of fluid per hour riding.
Good breakfast, and lots of munching on the train on the way up (nuts, fruit etc)
some energy gels, 2 Bananas, 4 chewy bars, 2 Mars, a roll and a couple of mini cans of fully leaded Coke !!
Multitool, 1 spare tube, pump, puncture kit, chain quick links etc
Tiny Rain proof small pack jacket

I found last year that eating regularly on the way down was the key to keeping the energy up, it sounds obvious I know but is easy to forget when the excitment of the day arrives. I intend to be eating something every 30 mins or so as we tend to ride at a pretty reasonable pace.
Last year we drafted along parts of the South downs way.

Who cares what the weather does, it's going to a great days riding 8)

just read the pack but cannot for the life of me see what to do with the sponsorship money :?

Most of my money has been given to me up front so pressures on to finish  do you send it off after or something?
  • Yes you send it off after the ride. Last year the didn't bother even chasing people for it.

If you’ve got cash and need to get it to BHF the easiest way is to set up an online sponsorship form and give the money you’ve collected that way via your bank account. Also people can still give money after you’ve completed the ride when we all bore them to death about what happened on the day!!
  • How's everyone getting on with their sponsorship? It's Obv harder this yr due to the current climate.

Hit £700 last night V my target of £500 so very happy with that! The only reason I got this much is it's my first event and I haven't asked for money before. I'm normally the one sponsoring others so it was payback time. Someone’s also kindly given me a cold, which of course if more like flu for us chaps so just brought every remedy you can think of!!

Sounds like there'll be a good few of us with man-flu then - maybe we should get sponsored by Beechams! I'm currently fighting off the start of a sniffle and hoping I can stop it developing until Staurday evening!

Sponsorship a bit slow - but I didn't really get going on it until late last week! Hopefully be able to tap up a few at work and call in some favours

1.8" knobblies fitted and pumped up rock hard - hoping rear end goes numb quickly!

Good luck everyone and see you on Saturday - I'll be the wheezing bloke on a red On One with extra dents - going slowly!
  • We have about 700 online and prob about the same again on paper. But there are 10 of us!

Don’t think I will get that amount when I ask again! Guess I will find out when I ask again next year. Going to give Winchester to Eastbourne in 1 day a go assuming I find Saturdays’ 75 ok. I know the South Downs will be a lot harder as I ride them a lot between Washington, Lewes & Seaford. Some killer hills when you are knackered!!!

Is it the same route as last year (the section from Hampton Court to Weybridge)? Can't take part this year but thinking of just going along to watch for a while and maybe find a good spot to take some photographs.
My abundant supply of MTFU is reserved for use in dry, sunny conditions.

Not sure if it is the same as last year but the section you mention is definitely included, through Richmond Park and pick up the tow path at Teddington down to Weybridge.

As I’m from the Brighton end of town I’m leaving home at 5.30 and getting a lift up. Should arrive around 6.45. Question is this a ride or a race? Do we all have visions of going as fast as possible or just making the finishing line?
  • Bit of both.

You staying in the Travelodge in West Street Brighton? If you are you are 20 meters from 2 night clubs & 2 pubs. It’s a lively area and will be very busy around 2am.
  • its not a race for me...........just as long as I beat Paul from ferrari,He roped me into this. that way I can prove once and for all that Porsche is faster!!

That'll be a northerly wind then

The weather is near perfect for the route.
Dry and cool with the wind behind us.

Couldn't have expected much better so lets all enjoy it.
    Can't wait to get going.
Is it me by the way or is my backpack heavier than a small child

Toni, don't be scared, you will be fine.
will be keeping an eye out for that blond ponytail on the way down

  • My bad! Was talking to someone whilst typing. Yes northerly! Itching to get going now.

My bag usually weighs a ton anyway so hopefully won't notice too much tomorrow. HOWEVER, I have a night ahead in a RAF bed so I am expecting the usual back ache in the morning!

Toni, don't worry! See you there!

Last top tip: usually the loos at roehampton are busy as on the morning of the ride with all the pre ride poo'ers and there is a good chance of no loo roll! Takes roll and leave it there. 50p for peace of mind!
