I think maybe you should cut Will some slack.Im very impressed that he has the passion and inner strength to do those sort of rides and the Garmin info tells it like it is.
I have never covered those sort of distances myself...but im opened minded as to see why he enjoys doing them... peace.0 -

The calories used is likely no where near that.
thats quite a ride... that deep fitness is something I wish to experience at least once more"If I was a 38 year old man, I definitely wouldn't be riding a bright yellow bike with Hello Kitty disc wheels, put it that way. Yeah - I don't understand all this snobbery and opposition - surely the right length of ride is the length that you are happy doing - or what is the point? You've got to want to do it?http://www.georgesfoundation.org

That's genuinely impressive Will and a great way to look at cycling.
I constantly find myself caught up in "training" and not taking time out to just enjoy. That's where mountain biking comes into it for me, just enjoying the ride. 8)
The thought of 9hours in the saddle makes my arse wince in sympathy! I'll stick to 4hours max I think.0 -

Agreed, some nice riding there Will.0 -
2 issues here aren't there? What do people like doing and what is beneficial from a training/racing point of view.
Long rides undoubtedly will help with strength and endurance but there is a point where you get deminishing returns and as most people do have time pressures this is why people differ so much.
Personally my logic and time pressures would mean that my long ride rarely goes over 3hours but I am inexperienced and the time spent may change but it will be based on my experience/experimentation. As ever forum opinions are interesting but let them influence you at your peril.0 -

Said that 2 pages back, but no one was listening0 -

Can't see why it's diminishing returns tbh, I was talking to a regular on a group ride I did today who is into racing, he is coached by a guy called Pete Read if anyone's heard of him, and it seems he think doing long rides are fine and good, and has told this guy to do long rides, the person who also helps me train also seems to think long rides help.
Tbh I'd rather be fast racing and have endurance, fair enough if you're time limited, but everyone who works full time is not limited and unable to do long rides.
All I know is, if I do racing, my long rides are beneficial, they certainly help my system improve.0
