Who cares what you wear - your money and your choice. I have a World Champs jersey cos it was a bargain and I like the colours. I am certainly not posing as a World Champ and I can promise that nobody will mistake me for one. My undies say St Michaels but that doesnt mean think Im a saint.

Is this the kind of thing you're after?

Surely there is only one rule for cycle clothing. Wear good/decent shorts. I'm not talking about padding or whether it has 10 or 12 panels I am talking about lycra shorts that have been worn too long and are wearing thin. Really not good, even worse if it raining.:cry:

So...if I'm just about to join a club where I'll buy the team kit etc, is it worth me splashing out on my (potentially) first pair of Assos bibs?
I think it's usually the weekends runs where everyone has team kit so should I just not get the Assos because I'll wear them during the week, love them...but will have to 'downgrade' to the team shorts?
Better to have never loved to start with etc :)

If you can afford Assos then get them, most important thing is being comfortable and it isn't uncommon for club cyclists to ride and even race in plain shorts.

shorts that are wearing thin? mine are doing just that, especially after sliding across 8 metres of tarmac the other day. Ha, fun times.

I love retro jerseys. Surely these are 'acceptable' to even the snobbiest of snobs! :)
Love my Z, PDM (original era) and St Raphael (modern copy) jerseys.

8m slide! Ouch. Any ar$e skin left!! :)

    you would hope so :)

haha, barely, lost most of the skin from about halfway up the side of my left thigh, all the way up over my ars3 cheek. Very painful. Was going a bit quick, and the corner was rather tighter than expected. The wheels slid out on the white lines. Anyone else find these are properly slippy with any dampness?

From just reading around the web there appears to be 'rules' for what you're allowed to wear on ride/club rides.

Stringing this thread along toward its first anniversary, I hope you're all well aware of the ettiquette that if you're invited to ride another local club's chaingang or club run, you shouldn't wear your own rival club's kit. (How could you not know? )

Being an unwritten rule I don't know over what range (between clubs) it's valid, or indeed if the rule has a finite range?
  • yea its shocking issnt it lol, i can buy TWO full kits from Ebay both at £25 and i would barely be able to afford TWO single items of the club stuff.

Maybe the club stuff is superior quality because the quality of a ' full kit ' costing 25 quid is gonna be poor

Wearing a team kit is no different to earing a football kit, IMHO.
Yellow jersey, KOM, etc & World Champs are a bit of a no-no, though.
If I rode a Spesh I think I'd go for a Spesh shirt, as they are nice.

Couldn't agree more, I don't wear team kit, but if I see people in it, I just think "ohhh that looks smart" most of the time.

The people that moan about wearing team kit are generally elitist idiots and are not worth your time worrying about.

I ride in my club kit with other club's Sunday ride, no probs, on the front, bright yellow and white with 40 red blue and blacks behind me? cool. Neither they or I care as long as you're out with friends...

  • Nearly bought radioshack shorts today. Because I like the red & grey pattern and (main reason) they had 50% off.

Lucky escape me thinks. Had no idea of the sh!tstorm that would've headed my way as old ladies overtook me up the hill!

Should I get "Amateur: V. slow" printed on my ace instead of Nissan? Should I also scratch all the stickers off my bike?

Sorry I haven't read all 10 pages but has anyone pointed out that lycra looks pretty silly regardless of colour or logo? I'll get my coat (Greg Lemond special edition)

World champion stripes are named because world champions earn them. Not being elitest or snobbish, just a fact, I wouldn't have the front to wear them as I think wearing them 'cos they look nice is rubbish.

England football shirts are named because England football players earn them.....do I need to go on?

    They're all just clothing

I have a top and shorts from the Vendee (France) I got them because I like them and it reminds me of a great time in France. Do I represent the Vendee at cycling? No.
What amuses me is that the technology that is created for world champions is then deliberately marketed at the general public to buy. What is the difference between having a bike which your pro rider uses and a shirt the pro rider uses? Neither would make me go like a pro rider and there is no way having either that I would be confused for being a pro rider. I think I might need to buy a world champion top and see how many autograph requests I get when wearing it. It's interesting that people are so passionate about cycling tops. Wearing football or rugby tops is acceptable and infact it is expected that you would wear it when going to support your team. If you buy an England shirt it has a star to represent winning one world cup. Not many people can say they really won that world cup.

PS My son who has a Manchester United top doesn't really play for Man U! :D
  • Jerseys that shouldn't be worn:-

Any jersey that is the sign of a race/category winner (i.e. TDF yellow jersey, KoM, National/World stripes etc etc) unless you have earned it (i.e. won the race/category).

A jersey that is sign of race/category winner is, in my eyes, like an olympic medal or the FA Cup. What would you think of someone that turned up for a group jog with a replica olympic gold medal around their neck, or if someone turned up to a 5 a-side match with a replica FA Cup or a replica FA Cup medal?

The winner jersey's should be left for the actual winner only, that is what they earned. They earned the right to stand out from every other rider in the race.

    Replica kit:-

I think wearing the top of the jersey is fine - but I don't wear them as I would rather wear my club colours. I think wearing the full replica kit is fine as well. But, in my opinion, it looks silly - the football kit comparison is made, but you can't say you wouldn't take the mickey out of someone that turned up to a friendly 5 a side footy match wearing full Man Utd football kit - socks, shorts, top, water bottle etc etc.

Personally I think team kit should be worn by the team only - it's a right they have earned - to stand out of the crowd when they are on training rides. Our sport is different to football in that the pro's are accessible to us - as we share the same training ground, the road! If only team riders wore team kit it would be easier to spot the pro's from the average joes.[/b]
  • I doubt the pros mind any more than the footballers mind if someone wears the team kit. It is, after all, what pays their wages and is somewhat flattering. Part of their job is to get publicity for their sponsors too.

I think the "champion" shirt thing is something we're never likely to agree on and comparisons with the FA cup are irrelevant (riders don't give their jersey back when someone else has won it). If the sport doesn't like people wearing the shirts, they should simply prevent replicas being made under copyright laws. Again, I'm sure they are happy for the money and the publicity.

  • comparisons with the FA cup are irrelevant (riders don't give their jersey back when someone else has won it).

We won't agree on it, but I just want to highlight FA Cup winners get a medal as do olympic race winners - what would you think of someone that turned up to a 5 a side match / group jog with a replica gold medal around their neck?

I couldn't wear the winners' jerseys because I would feel like a fraud in them, I have too much respect for the winners and I feel they earned it and the only way to earn it, is to win it.

I don't get the - wearing shimano tops while riding bianchi etc etc or wearing specialized while riding trek. I wouldn't even notice if someone did that, I actually wear specialized gloves, have specialized helmet, specialized water bottles but ride trek bikes..... I don't care because they are just names, a company, manufacturers that provide me with the tools to enjoy my sport. I will get what ever is best for value, in my eyes, regardless of what name it has on it.

A winners' jersey, for me, is sacred and should only be worn by the few that earn them...

So the fact that I respect the winners' jerseys so much means that when I see someone wearing one (that, in my eyes, hasn't earned the right), I think that they don't have as much respect for the jersey as I do....

But it has been highlighted, by another poster in this thread, that they feel they have earned the right because the trained hard and lost weight. If you feel you have earned it, then I see nothing wrong with wearing it.So maybe the next time I see someone in a winners jersey I will question myself, as to whether I think the person has less respect for the jersey as I do OR whether they feel they have earned it another way.

The winners' jerseys are like a job title or a Rank in the army > you have to earn it, it's not something that can be bought (although sometimes it is) and if you don't earn it what right do you have to put it against your name....

    So do cycling world champs

Anybody would feel stupid wearing the medal (I don't suppose even the champs wear the medals much)

To my mind, the jersey is a jersey. But I'm sure we won't agree on that. (BTW I don't wear any team kit of any sort from any sport - except when I'm representing that team in that sport)

  • Myself I ride for team ALDI, the gear is okay for me .I've never understood the thought processes of grown men who parade themselves in football shirts complete with name & number, considering that some of them appear very non- athletic. Perhaps it's a form of "tribalism" & a desire to belong , giving them an identity. Shrinks please form a queue.

I'm happy for anyone to wear anything because both them and me will know that they don't ride for that team/won that jersey.
The team/favourite jersey might be the thing that attracted them to the sport in the first place.
They were inspired by someone or something to get on a bike which can only be a good thing.
I'm sure we wouldn't mock a kid for wearing a classification jersey so why an adult?
    They should know better?!!?
Same goes for footy kits. Some people just love their sport/team and want everyone to know it.
I bet there are fan(atics) out there who have team bikes as well as the kit.
Each to their own but I would hate for newcomers to be put off the sport by shirt snobbery!
    :)

I wear what I like, sometimes I dress quite scruffy for club rides, the more scruffier of my clothes are actually comfy, I notice abit of snobbery in some club rides but it does not bother me.

Oh on the Ryedale Rumble out of the whole field I was one of the most scruffy riders there, I had a spare bike tyre sticking out of my back pocket on a crappy looking bike with scruffy clothes, you could see peoples reactions when I went past them, quite a few didn't like it and decided to try and overtake me or hand on the back then attack.

I don't look scruffy with a Manchester Wheelers jersey on tho cause they are one of the best looking jerseys you can put on.
