Someone quickly tell me why it would be bad to spend £4500 on this, because I can't think why

I saw an older one of these chained up outside of a shop the other day (which itself is bonkers) and I fear, ITB, that it looked nice. Even close up. Then the police came and I had to nip off.

Because it would look wrong in a damp dull country like the UK.

A new stem and chain are probably in order, but whats with that rear cassette?
Why is it 'only' a 105 version, and why the 11-23 range with full size cranks? Is that a "your going to change this anyway may as well not charge too much for it" plan?

Other than those very minor niggles, that is a lovely bike indeed.

Okay i've put my tongue and credit card away seems the frame and forks are the ame for the entire AR range but the finishing kit bump the price from £2200 to £6500 guess i'll be buying the Ultegra model AR4 I think, after a test ride.

    Phew!

since when did spending +£2k seem like a good / better thing.

You can have custom sizing if nothing else, ITB, and for the same price as the AR4....: Viner Perfecta with Chorus £2474.99 ('09 model while stocks last) at Velocity Bikes ;)....

£4500 probably still not enough for a Maxima, unfortunately ;)

£6500? That'd get you a maxima and a good amount of change. Hell, that might even get you a custom Parlee.

When the review says it's heavy, what's the likely over all weight? Unless I'm being stupid I can only see the frame weight..,

You aren't going to get custom sizing on last years stock

I think Maxima frame is under 3k so you could get one all in for £4500.

Epic have Maxima (2010) price as £3k. £4500 wouldn't buy a really decent spec though...

Seems a bit inappropriate for commuting, I'd say...we are on the commuting forum arn't we?

The tyres look a bit puncture-prone; no room for mudguards; no rack eyelets (not that you necessarily want panniers, but it's good to have the option; the frame looks a bit fragile; maybe a target for thieves, too.

    Dangerously low FCN, too...

How much did you say? Pah! Get yourself a nice Pearson Touche and take a holiday with the change....

    Cheers,
    W.

Yeah, the styling is a bit busy. That's the problem with a lot of modern bikes (and sports equipment, and motorbikes, and razors, and phones and other man bling). It just looks a bit childish, screaming 'look at me!' The colour scheme is nice, it's just wayyyyy too busy.

And lol. Subtle composition there, do they have two suns where it was shot? Or do you think they used photoshop?

just on the merits of going custom, does anyone know why the TdF pro teams generally dont ride custom frames?

I'm not so sure they're not custom.

They may look the same on the outside but I'm pretty sure a lot of teams beef up the stiffness at the expense of a little weight for the bigger riders or sprinters.

Also, if there isn't a perfect fit, they get custom adjustments (see Boonen's specialised Roubaix for Paris Roubaix!)
Note: the above post is an opinion and not fact. It might be a lie.

Outside the Cervelo Test Team, the bikes are just tools to the team. Any top-end road bike will do as racing at that level is far more a tactical game of chess. It matters more to the manufactuers, which is why they pay for the privilidge of supplying a team.
Since it's purpose is to advertise your frames, it's much better to have the team on standard bikes than one-off custom varients.

Some riders will want/need some modification, the top sprinters usually, and anyone with a very wierd body shape that can't be made fit the standard bike, but it's not a line the teams like going down either, it gives them extra logistical headaches and you don't carry a spare bike on the team car for every rider. The manufactuers like to keep this quiet too.
