i was having problems with indexing yesterday, seems to be in the middle cogs on the cassette, not sure if its cause ive not ridden the bike for ages

Here Kangaroo, jump to this link......

thanks i will look at that

If it's just in the mid-range your cassette/chain/both could be worn. I've only had the Spesh for 18 months and it's not had much use in that time but it could already do with new chainrings and cassette.
ive only put new ones on a few months ago and have changed the chain roughly once a month (except last month when i didnt ride)
i think it needs re-indexing after this chain was fitted, not really done a lot of riding on this one

Anyone know what the conditions are going to be like ? Just trying to decide which tyres to use. It was really wet and snowy in wales but really struggled with the schwalbe ice tyres because they grip so much and are so heavy. Downhill parts where ace but trying to climb the hills was like riding through glue.

not sure on the conditions, but the peaks is rocky if that helps and we will mostly be pushing up the hills

Just had a look at the proposed route that's been posted up and noticed it's about 23 miles your doing, this may be a bit ambitious for me, iv only been going out a couple of hours at a time lately and doing about 6-8 miles while I work may way back to fitness

i wouldn't worry about the the distance to much cause i think there will be several place to break away from the main group and head back to the carpark, if i remember correct it s the kind of place where they can say head down this path and you'll be by the reservoir and its then just a flattish road to to the carpark
saying that though, last time i went i was with a faster group and only manged to do about 20ish miles. and I've lost some fitness since then so i might want to head back early as well. but I'm hoping at the slow pace it should all be fine

You should be OK mate, the whole point of the ride is to prove that places like the Peak District aren't just for the uber fit. There will be plenty of breaks and as already mentioned, there will be plenty of us pushing some of the uphill sections. If you get to the top of Hope Cross and decide you've had enough I can get you back to the car park easily by retracing your steps but once you've gone though Jaggers Clough and towards the Farm it's debatable whether it's easier to go back or just carry on.

If the forecasts I'm looking at are correct, any snow up there from yesterday will have chance to thaw weds/thurs/fri/sat this week. The 15 day forecast on Accuweather has been different on each of the last 3 days I've checked it, but at the minute it's giving out Sunny and +3 degrees with light winds. Conditions under foot, certain pockets hold water for a long time so they will be boggy and water takes ages to run off the hills so even if we don't get much rain before Sunday, the trails will still be wet but bear in mind that there are a few sections of tarmac so don't put your biggest n best mud tyres on or the ride towards Hope will be a pain in the @rse.

I'll be leaving the Conti Mountain Kings on, partly because I'm still finding out what they're like but mainly because I can't be arsed changing them.

last time i was up there it was about 3 weeks since it last snowed, an there was still plenty of snow about in high places, about 4 ft deep around top of whinstone lee, good fun though.

Don't worry about the A57 being closed. Its pretty much always open as far as Fairholmes anyway, as long as your not coming from the Glossop side. Its the bit over the hills that gets closed whenever there is a whiff of snow.

Aaaaaaaaaanyhoo.... it's not closed according to The AA live traffic website and Google traffic maps (updated every 3 minutes. There's 6 days to go anyway and according to Accuweather it's going to be 10 degrees on Friday so we'll be fine. Honestly.

If the pass is closed from Glossop then follow this route........

Before you get to Glossop take the A628 round the back of ladybower reservoir and then right onto A616 onto A6102 onto B6079 towaeds sheffield, then right onto A6106 and onto A57, the reservoir will then be on your right.

Check it out on google maps.

I've got the original Spesh tyres that came with the bike, a set of old ones that I use on the Marin (can't remember what they are), a set of semi-slicks for dry compact trails and the Mountain Kings. I don't have a vast array of tyres for all conditions in all seasons because my biking budget doesn't extend to it.

    Pads arrived today tho :D

I carry a first aid kit with me but it's the same first aid kit I've been carrying for the last 6 years or so, so if any of the contents have a use by date, it will have expired by now. Should be OK for emergencies tho.

I suppose if we all carry bits and bobs we should be able to lash something up to get out of trouble...

and another thing have the Risk Assesments been carried out for the route? all sharp and or dangerous objects removed? sufficient cotton wool to wrap everyone in?

Then again Feck it I'm not at work....

    IMPORTANT NOTE:

PLEASE make sure you check the forum on Saturday evening. I can't see any problems arising that would threaten the ride going ahead but just to be sure...... I will also post a final reminder about start point and who you are looking for. If you have any questions about where you're going, please ask.

It's gonna be a giggle
