It was the same section where me and DKenny practised on our last ride (aka Parklife version style), that first little step landing into the roots, glad we didn't do the other drop into steep descent. But after Naveed's crash had to walk back to the car and abandon the sweetest singletrack awaiting. There is always next time.

Seeing the slow motion 7foot rider crash, spin 360 degrees flicking the 29er into the air with looong legs and a big pile of the bike land on that statue ... those memories I may not forget for a while. It was like Eiffel Tower going over the bars Could never think that a 1 foot step into flat trail could ever catch the rider out. Well, celebrity status commands the price. Glad this time Naveed didn't make it 2nd time into MBR, albeit at -These old men should have known better- section.

Naveed, get well soon, I suppose your twisted wrists at least allow you to type something on forums, even if it may take you to type short replies for couple of hours robot rigid arms style.

Shame it was another soldier down. IF I only knew, wouldn't even suggest to ride trails like that.

Just to ease the pain here is a little movie

Thanks for the beautiful description above, I don't think I'll ever forget the crash or being compared to the Eiffel Tower
Still healing up but have improved to the point where I can put my jeans on unassisted.
Def off the bike for another week, have ordered some cheap arm protection gear for next time.

Thel33ter got his new bike. Very nice - 40 million gazillion settings on the rear shock, is going to take some time to get it right.
Only problem is it needs a new BB. Shouldn't be a problem, and the seller did say it needed one, BUT what he didn't say was that someone had tried to change it and made an abortion of the crank bolts. Impossible to remove them, even mechie at Evans had a go, so going to need to have them drilled out. Anybody got a decent drill?

We were going meet you lot to try it out tomorrow at SH, but instead now going to pick up the Kona and spend the afternoon at Swinley.

So anybody else going there let me know - probably early afternoon - 2 ish.

    That would be good.

Overall I'm pretty pleased with the bike, and a guy in Evans said he would have paid around £700 for it :D Riding off the porch (about a foot) in the garden in barely noticeable, only annoying thing apart from the cranks is having to take the shock out to adjust the boost valve.

    Now I just need:

Flat pedals, a BB, stuff to service the forks and to bleed the brakes.

Anyone want to swap two sets of spd's for some flats

Text me if you go and we'll find you. Promise to be on best behaviour so Mrs Atz will not dump you.
If you do maybe stick the drill in the car - will be much appreciated.

@Supraman - forgot to ask the guy about the shock mounts, is the 68.5 head angle and low bb the slack one?

Got some time in this morning. Great weather and not many people out and about so no need to worry about catching or being caught (except the guy I caught up on BKB at exactly the wrong time). Today's forgetfulness had me leaving my QR on my workbench but luckily Pedal and Spoke in Peaslake opens before 9 so I bought a replacement. The way I'm going, next week I'll forget my bike.

Not going to Swinley today Cooldad but if you want the drill I'm sure we can work out a handover for it today or during the week as you're not that far from here. One caveat though, I don't have any drill bits for metal (masonry and wood only) so you'll need to buy one.

Thanks Atz, won't make it this afternoon as we are off to Swinley in a minute, but will give you a call during the week.

  • @ thel33ter : yes the 68.5 is the low one. To think that is supposed to be slack, by now days standards equivalent bikes are 66.

if ever you need the steep one they cost about 40 pounds.

I don't think I ll be out on trails for another 2 weeks.

I know, my Kona is 68.8. Would probably be nearer to 66 that with 160mm forks, the Talas's on it are only 145mm on full travel.

@Atz, forgetting your QR? Thats worse than me.

Are the bolts stripped or is it just seized solid?

If it's seized, 3-in-1 penetrating oil and/or breaker bar. I've got both I can lend. They sorted out my crank bolts.

Also, is it a self extracting bolt? Sometimes people try to undo the outer bolt and it thus becomes non self extracting and you need a crank puller (also got).

Anyway, heads up next week Sunday 19th the plan for me is to explore Caesars Camp which is around Aldershot/Fleet area, courtesy of Sandy Hill who knows the area.

I'm sure they are not self extracting. Just stupidly tight, and someone has rounded out the bolts trying to get them out before so the allen key just turns and twists out.
Looks like a big drill, and if that doesn't work hacksaw or angle grinder.
Annoying as like any kid with a new toy he wants to play with it.
And he said I can play with his Kona, although being a mature adult type person, I can deal with it better. Waaaahh want to play.

  • Morning folks, I along with 2 other Essex lads headed over to the Leith hill area last week for a few days of cycling, top area and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Two things though… how on earth do you climb Leith Hill from the east with out stopping.. freaking roots and stones everywhere… jeepers that was hard.

Also heading north up Wolverns lane why does ther sign post for summer lightning point straight on when in reality it should be a left turn ? … took us ages to figure that out

That's to keep the good bits private.
There are loads of great rides which are very hard to find if you don't know the area.
There are a number of people on here who ride there regularly and know it well. Always nice to have new faces so keep a look out for times and meeting spots.
And some (quiet a few some actually) end up pushing up the last bt of Leith.

I did read somewhere it's 210m from the bottom 'junction' to the top of thee hill.... I struggled on and off the bike for the first 160m and then took the right hand fork which bends rounds the hill for the last 50m......

we did mange to find summer lightning in the end... actually did it twice although one of the guys got a bit lost  .... ( how do you get lost on singletrack Darrell ?:wink: )

look fwd to getting back there at some point

That Summer Lightning sign threw me the first time too, and I even followed the instructions on Diary of a Mountain Biker. I missed the bit that said "There is a really rooty but sandy section immediately through the gate to confirm you are on the right trail.". It then mentions about the sign but I thought the initial sign/gate was the one it was on about.

In addition to this, should be up for somewhere on Saturday also. If the ride doesn't come off for Caesars then it'll be a SH or Swinley ride on Sunday (or maybe Tunnel Hill, or I might explore Caesars on my own). Anyway, anyone up for Caesars Camp? It's somewhere around here.

  • Hey SH'ers,

Am starting to get some fitness up after a few months whacking about on the new bikes , would be up for joining in a group ride this coming wknd if there is anything sorted?

Currently wangled a full Fri-Sun off work and tempted to try Afan on Friday for the first time (weather permitting), really give the new 'puppy' a proper run out. But would be up for a SH mission on the Sat or Sun too.

    Cheers.

Anyway, yes, as it stands am solo. The surf report is pants for Fri so its a bike day for me. If you dont mind dealing with a newbie moaning alot, wobbling all over the place and generally not taking it seriously at all .. (and thats just the drive there), would deffinately appreciate a buddy that knows the trail.
