I'm not going to lie, it involves a clipboard, pen, and stopwatch most likely, standing around in swinley for three or four hours and getting a bit cold. But! It will help someone out who is doing grassroots racing in a fun and friendly format that promotes mountain biking and isn't his living.
You forgot to mention the hot pit girls in bikinis, the amoral groupies, meeting world famous riders, the after party with unlimited blow and hookers etc.*

Well, I know of at least one ex-national DH champ that is racing that day... does that qualify as famous?

  • Being brutally honest. I would rather be riding than marshalling. So thats what i'll be doing. Probably in Wales.

Hope all goes well and its a top event.

  • Going to be at Swinley this Sat for a Clubhouse area session. Definitely no XC loops or any of that, I'll just be sessioning that area. Anyone up for it?

Also Ben I will help out if I can (and take you up on the offer of a once over on the bike after and a beer ;)) but at the moment I've planned a weekend in Brighton but it's not 100%. I'll let you know if it doesn't happen and I'll help for sure.

Finally back to sensible posts. I may be riding with the school, but if not I'll be up for it.

Have I met you before? I'll be on a green/black Specialized Status. Sounds good, that's basically what I want to do anyway. I'll PM you my number in case I don't see you guys, will be nice to have people to session the drops with :D
  • Yes we've met before. On a Swinley ride when you were riding a shorter travel Specialized and talking about buying the Status. so a looong time back.

See you there Eddie and we'll keep a look out for the Green Canyon/White Orange 5/Black Santa Blur. I don't think I've ever ridden Camel and my knowledge of SF is piecemeal. I had a look on utube but didn't recognise it.
  • Weathers been raining all day and its going to continue into the night. Everyones gunna be riding brown bikes tomorrow.

Brown bikes bathed in sunlight. Metoffice app forecasts a clear sunny day from 10am onwards.

Yeah that was me! Sorry for not recognising you, it's difficult to tell with forum names sometimes! See you later on hopefully.

Yeah, what a gorgeous day, autumn colours kicking in. Eddie and I managed to string a few trails together but missed the turning for Seagull and Corkscrew. Doing Labyrinth twice made up for it a bit.

Hitting Swinley tomorrow with Will 'n Dan, if anyone wants to join us. About 1130 I think. Where's good to park now then, any guidance I can aim into a satnav would be welcomed.

If you want to avoid parking charges, you really need to park in either Camberley, Bagshot or Crowthorne now. Either:

    http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X=48 ... &A=Y&Z=110 - Car park - plenty of spaces
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X=48 ... &A=Y&Z=110 - Just some space near a gate, but usually a couple of spots spare
http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X=48 ... &A=Y&Z=110 - Popular with dog walkers, can get busy.

All of the above mean you need to cross Crowthorne wood, but thats got good trails of its own, and from the first or second option to Seagull is about 5-10 mins ride.

or http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X=48 ... &A=Y&Z=110 (not actually any parking there though - just on the street).

...ended up deciding 4 hours for £2 wasn't bad and would just about be long enough, which it was. Nice day for a ride and good to be back in the saddle after 3 weeks off the bike.

I was thinking that as I rode into Swinley... 'I bet that they just pay to park!'

Haha, plus I spent the whole journey pretty much faffing around on my phone trying to work out which one we should go for (I was not the driver!).

Must say, the parking fee doesn't seem to have made it any less popular, I don't think I've seen the car park there so overcrowded before. Might make more effort to try the alternatives just for that reason next time.
  • Anyone fancy a bit of Stile Cop down hilling anytime soon? I'm thinking Sunday 21st?

I refuse to pay for Swinley parking on principle, even if it's more hassle but then I'd spend as much time trying to find somewhere to park there anyway as parking elsewhere and riding in.

As for the marshalling thing - not sure what I'm doing. Been off the bike a bit and want to be out as much as possible this weekend if possible. Though could take the camera along, but depends if it's just standing by a fireroad pointing the way or somewhere where there's action. More likely to head for the hills. I'd only turn up late anyway ;)
