For Turbo users - New Vid

I've used thiis a few times now. Some comments:
1) It's a big file (700mb or so). If you ISP throttles your download speed, it will take a long time to download.
2) I play it on a PC - resolution is fine
3) I like a longer warmup so I generally have a gentle twiddle for a few minutes before starting the video
4) Music's fine - nothing to write home about but it keeps you motivated
5) The intervals are structured on perceived efforts out of 10. This makes it easy to adjust your efforts to how you feel.
6) wouldn't use it for every session though as it is hard work if you do it properly
7) It's great value for the money - it certainly relieves the boredom and makes a change from tour de france vids0 -
Trailer for the new one, should be grand!

Well, had a do at the new one at http://www.thesufferfest.com...
It's entitled 'Fight Club' and by jove it's hard!
Starts off with a nice leisurely bimble with a basket fronted shopper but then you are soon in the thick of it.
The footage for the intervals is based around the 2009 World Champs in Mendrisio and it has been produced very well, with some good footage and snippets of commentary.
Just when you think you can't push any harder you get the ATTACK! notice and you can't help but dig that bit deeper.
The intervals are longer than the downward spiral (approx 7 minutes) with attacks scattered throughout the interval. It seems to target threshold/VO2 max rather than sufferfest which was more the VO2 max/ Neuromuscular Power range. Definitely good racing training!
The cool down video is a highly informative piece of work too!
My Heart Rate was frequently above my Lactate Threshold (the red dotted line, 175bpm). Yellow dotted line is my current FTP of 265.
I'm still getting the fit dialled in on the bike and have not been drinking enough water the last few days so power was a bit down. Will nail this next time when bike is sorted and I've been drinking enough!
All in all, it's a bargain compared to CTS et al training DVDs and a NapD must buy for winter!0 -
Bought it earlier on and had a go this afternoon.
Didn't complete it!! Couldn't gauge the numbers to the power I'm using and went off way too hard. Also tired and surges are not really my style.
I'm going to have another go later at a much lower power and use that as a baseline.
For example for anyone using this with power I tried using the following scale (the efforts are graded 1-10)
6-260
7-270
8-280 etc
Obviously this needs adjusting depending on ftp etc. my ftp is around 270 at the moment I just thought I'd give an idea of how to gauge the efforts and perhaps start a discussion on it.
Nap' what was your IF score at the end of it?
Perhaps I should look at the workout as a whole rather than targeting the individual intervals.0 -

For the whole ride the IF was .88 (Includes all the recovery sessions).
I did 6 as 250
7 as FTP (265)
8 as 2800 -
just got IF 0.83. Went way too easy. but it still felt hard. That's what a week on the turbo does to you I suppose.0

Hi there.
I had a go at fight club the other night, and found it _much_ tougher than the downward spiral!
My main problem was that I was doing the time trial intervals at the same intensity as I had done the intervals on the downword spiral (320w on my tacx flow, if that means anything), then I'd jump with the attacks, but really, really struggled to get back to the 320w to continue the interval. Then when it came to the low-cadence climb section my power would drop significantly, even though I was putting in more perceived effort!
Funnily enough, I felt much less beat up the next day after fight club than downward spiral...
This might reflect more on the type of rider that I am, and the steady-state intervals that I'm used to rather than the video itself. I'm used to pusing a steady effort for a given period, but the random jumps just took it out of me and meant that I was unable to work as hard for the rest of the session.
Pure roadies might benefit more from these jumps though.
Cheers, Andy
ps I tried downward spiral again as an under/over session - 310 watts for the intervals, 280 for the recovery - this was actually a pretty good session, maybe even better than the pure interval/recovery way of doing it. I only did the first half, then went for a run (brick), but am planning to have another go over the next few days.0 -
Yeah Andy, as I posted earlier, I've done the downward spriral as an over under and got a lot from it.
From fight club, I also found the attacks very hard with a power drop after them. I know they're not exactly tester specific but they do break the session up a bit and they'll be great 'cause I intend to draft a lot next year in races
Also great to watch Spartacus on the last one, pity they didn't get a camera going past him. How cool would that be, passing Cancelara while he's pumping out 100 (rpm) and I'm slowly churning at 60 (rpm)0 -
I should add since people might read this thread and look for other vids. I find the first hour of the spinervals dvd 'have mercy' very very good. It has a nice variety of hard intervals. No music and the guy can be annoying though.0
-
Hi Chris.
Sorry - haven't been on here for a while, until recently, and didn't read all the posts in the thread.
Yes it would be nice to overtake Cancellara, but the camera bikes are not even allowed to pull level with the riders in a TT.
Spinervals - last time I saw one of those must have been nearly 10 years ago! Iirc it was fronted by a guy called Coah Troy - is it still the same one?
Cheers, Andy0 -
Sorry to bore people with this.
Just did the session again but without the sprints (yes I know what's the point...) and managed an IF of 0.93. Just goes to show that the attacks are a real killer for me. If ever I road raced then I would be easily beat, just keep attacking me. :shock:0 -
Nap, I've not used the Sufferfest workouts before, and so far tend to flit between Carmichael, Rick Kiddle and a few Tour DVD's. Have you got any recommendations for a particularly good 1 hour workout from the site? Any that stand out?
I quite like stuff that involves intervals and lots of pace changing. Not necessarily racing, but some sprinting, endurance and climbing etc.
cheers

Sprints/Attacks are not as abstract a concept as many people think. It's another skill which one can learn to improve just like with anything else. Keep at it and you'll get better. Have you seen the Tabata thread? That's perfect for this kind of thing, although doing an hour of sprints on the road is more fun. I used to also die when it came to this sort of thing but a very fun sprint workout inbetween traffic lights on my old commute day-in-day-out sorted me out in a very very short space of time. If you're doing it right, you should be on the limit most of the time with your HR near to the max and you should try to push even harder even when you feel like your heart will explode. It takes mental strength to push even harder through that barrier instead of giving in and going into recovery mode but it's really worth it as i've found sprinting to be one of the fastest improving sides to my cycling.0 -

Tried the Downhill Spiral one today and really enjoyed it.
Cheers for the link.0 -
Just done the Fight club for the first time, a great, tough session, especially after three quite hilly days with a few ciders in the evenings! Found lap 4 tough, stuck in a garden shed without a fan nearly threw the towel in!
Had the PT/Garmin to read the numbers so it will interesting to compare when the festive season is over, cheers!0 -

I've tried the Fight Club one. On paper I thought it was going to be easier than the first spiral intervals one. I was wrong. It hurt. A lot. But in a good way I'm really linking the sufferfest releases.0
-
Just did 2x15s, used the Downward Spiral to watch while I did it.
Super stuff and versatile too!0 -
Done the Downward Spiral a couple of times now. Like others have said about under and over I tend to go to hard on the recovery and hence don't max max out on the intervals although I'm still way up over ftp.
Thers talk on the Sufferfest site about doing both of the current vids back to back on the 2nd of Jan (don't know why the 2nd). I can only imagine the pool of sweat that will produce.0 -
Just done fight club - found it enjoyable but was slightly suprised to see how low my ave watts were for the session - it definately felt harder than that....0

I did that, was not easy. Having a push a big gear in Fight Club was not pleasant after doing the Downward Spiral beforehand.
The club run was cancelled, so used that as an alternative, and probs will again if the ice dosnt go away!0 -

Got round to doing the Fight Club one last night and really liked it. So much so I think in a sick kind of way it's my favourite training disc at the moment.
So Nap, once again, thanks for the recommendations.0 -
Did The Downward spiral yesterday it was very hard work but i enjoyed it. Thanks for the recomendation i think i will get fight club next0

Can anyone advise me on how to structure the best use of these vids? I am doing mon/tues thurs/fri downward spira,l sat off and usually a sunday morning MTB ride as well as most weekday mornings in they gym for a hour.
I dont have a power meter but i do have a HRM and cadence speedo, i also have some "plain ride" dvds as a option and i was thinking of buying the Fight club vid.
I mostly ride to help the weight loss, but i really enjoy my MTB sessions and the focus of my training is to be able to keep up with the pack more.
Any suggestions on mixing and matching the vids and my training plan would be welcomed.A feather is kinky, a whole chicken is just perverse.0 -
I just discovered this handy little bit of software for getting your DVD's onto an ipod if your missus won't let you set up your turbo in the lounge
http://handbrake.fr/
Busy putting my Spinervals DVD on it right now for playing at the gym. it's coming out at about 1GB for an hour's DVD, but I've left it a quite a decent quality so I can run it on my laptop at home also. If all you want it for is an iPod you could probably get it to half that size.
I spent ages trying out other 'free' ones only to discover that they only let you rip about 5 minutes before trying to flog you the commercial upgrade. Hope this helps someone else save some time.0
