Well to be fair, they're only on motorbikes because of fashion. There's no engineering benefit to having a single sider. Ducati has a lot to answer for.
They make a lot of sense on shaft drive bikes as you have to have so much metal on the shaft-side anyway, you might as well just make it single sided.

Looks cooler as well of course.
You only need two tools: WD40 and Duck Tape.
If it doesn't move and should, use the WD40.
If it shouldn't move and does, use the tape.

They also allow for quicker wheel changes in endurance races. Ducati didn't invent the single sided swing arm either.

I think it was Moto Guzzi. Honda made it famous with the RC30, the Honda NR750 also inspired Mr Tambourine Man when he designed the Duke 916.

The thing about some of these BSOs, right, is that they're not actually BSd.

On single sided swingarms- the time for a wheel swap with the new dual arms is slightly faster than a single sider. Really everyone just uses them because they're cool looking. The 999 had a dual, because the 999 was actually built for riding not for looking at. Everyone said it was ugly so the 1098 got a single sider again  Ducati triumphantly announced that "The 1098's swingarm weighs the same as the 999's and is almost as stiff!" but they weren't including the hub

I would have to disagree, for example the 2010 Marin Mount Vision (one with the dark grey and white paint job) is a superb looking bit of kit. But I guess I am a bit bias, must be a love/hate thing.

Also the second image you list is not a BSO.
