Well, if I'm out on my bike (one bike for off-road nowadays - my trusty Intense 6.6) on a cross-country loop, the chances are I'm going quite slow, especially compared to folks on XC race bikes. My bike is quite small on me, and the suspension, all 170mm front and rear, quite soft... So I appear to not be using it to it's full potential.

Likewise, on more 'extreme' routes, and doing a spot of DH, I realise that my 170mm travel is quite alot, but it's not ideal as a DH bike, so again, I go quite slowly compared to some of the guys on full-on DH bikes.

I'm not a pussy on the trail, but nor trail-God. I'll go my own pace, thanks. Yeah, my bike cost a fair bit, but I don't care - it makes me smile, ALOT. As long as the other guys on the trails are smiling too, what's it matter what anyone else rides? So long as they aren't dangerous - IE no brakes...

But yeah, who care's what anyone else's bike is worth? Chances are unless you are either Lance Armstrong, Liam Kileen or Steve Peat, you AREN'T using your bike to it's 'full potential', so why get sh*tty when some office-exec decides to ride a DH bike on your XC route? If it's what he wants, fine! Sure, let him know it's overkill, and that most folk won't need that much travel, but don't get mad cause he's not ragging his bike!!!

Personally, I never make assumptions about anyone on their bike. There is also a conventional wisdom that says "buy the best bike you can afford". It isn't often followed with "unless you're a newbie because you don't deserve it".

    HI ~Diddly-i neighbour!

everyone has to start somewhere. like me. i just spent £100 on stuff and clothes for winter, and when i went out was worried that some gnarly eedjits would call me out for being all the gear and no idea, because, to be honest, i ride on my own, i learn from the web/mags etc and try and put it into practice elsewhere.

and to all the violent sorts who seem to fancy themselves a bit handy - grow up. people who are actually handy or dangerous tend not to shout loud in internet forums about how they'd hit people they'll never meet. it's pathetic, laughable and not, to my mind, what a community of mtbers needs.

go get your shiny shirts out and go to your local ritzy or something, or just come out to your family. they'll understand eventually, and you can get the pink lycra out of the cupboard then. not riding lycra, that little unitard you put on when the wife's out.

for pete's sake people, if someone else's bike, or opinion on your bike, is the biggest problem you face, i want your lives.

On a slightly different but related note I was riding home from work last night and I see this guy in front of me with no back light (of course it's pitch black by this point) and so I'm thinking that's not very sensible.

Anyway I catch up with him to discover that he's riding (sorry this is a road bike and you're all mountain bikers) a titanium enigma with mostly campag Chorus stuff and fully dressed in Rapha kit. That's a bike that costs just under £4k and clothing that costs £240 for a jacket etc and yet this plum couldn't be bothered to buy a back light.

I didn't say anything but honestly what planet do some people live on?

I think "all the gear" people get to mock you because your bike is worth less than theirs, and then the "real" riders who do DH black runs on unicycles also get to mock you because you're not as good at being "Gnarly" as them .

Or you could buy more gear!

you haven't got a leg to stand on. You will be mocked by everyone - even those without bikes.

If you don't have the best gear then you're a no-one!
